Andhra Pradesh signs MoUs with IBM, TCS, and L&T to establish India's first Quantum Valley in Amaravati

VIJAYAWADA: In a significant development towards positioning the State as the leader in the Quantum technology sector, the government has ratified the three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with IBM, TCS, and L&T on the Quantum Valley Project. Orders to this effect were issued on Friday.
The Andhra Pradesh Quantum Valley Project aims to establish India's first dedicated hub for quantum computing and technology in Amaravati. Scheduled for inauguration on January 1, 2026, this project aims to position Andhra Pradesh and India as global leaders in this cutting-edge field.
Inspired by the success of Hyderabad's HITEC City, a similar hub in Amaravati is conceived with a focus on quantum technologies.
As part of this, the State government engaged with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and International Business Machines (IBM) to explore potential partnerships and strategies for establishing a quantum computing hub. These engagements laid the foundation for the formal agreements and the unveiling of the Quantum Valley Project in Amaravati.
In this background, the State government inked pacts with industry giants IBM, TCS, and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) to establish India's first 'Quantum Valley Technological Park' in Amaravati. The MoUs also outline the roles of each partner in building a robust quantum ecosystem.

'Roles within IBM in India haven't dipped'

India is among the fastest growing markets for IBM, which expects to open a new centre in Lucknow by September this year, said Sandip Patel, the technology giant's managing director for India and South Asia. 'India is designated as one of the five growth markets for IBM around the world, the other ones being Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Mexico, and UAE,' Patel told ET. In the last four years or so, IBM has more than doubled its business in India, he said. It has also been expanding in tier-2 and 3 cities, such as Gandhinagar and Kochi. Now, it is looking for fresh talent for the proposed Lucknow centre. 'We are going to make it the hub for a lot of our data capabilities… hoping we will inaugurate sometime in September,' said Patel. India with its demographic dividend can become the 'skill capital' of the world, but meaningful upskilling is needed, he said. Discover the stories of your interest Blockchain 5 Stories Cyber-safety 7 Stories Fintech 9 Stories E-comm 9 Stories ML 8 Stories Edtech 6 Stories 'Work is going to take fewer people-no questions about it. With automation, the traditional jobs will go away. So, if you don't skill yourself to stay ahead of the curve, it is going to be very difficult,' said Patel. At IBM, artificial intelligence (AI)-aided productivity boost has saved the company $3.5 billion in the last two years. 'There is a lot of coding that is automated, but that automation of that coding does not preclude people who are good test engineers, who can develop the right kind of test scripts around it, (from evolving into) prompt engineering, which is becoming a huge discipline--so those roles are getting created,' said Patel, adding that we are yet to scratch the surface of these new roles. 'For those roles, you will need basic technology acumen of people who have the right way of thinking logically about programming and writing code,' he said. While most Indians are apprehensive that lower-level roles in the IT sector may be taken over by AI, disrupting the traditional pyramid hiring structure, Patel believes that early professional hired talent is a good thing, with more staying power within an organisation and the ability to adapt culturally. 'Shaping talent to adapt to the kinds of technologies that you ultimately want to proliferate, I think it's going to still be a blend of both (fresh and experienced hires),' he said. The total number of roles within IBM in India has not dipped, Patel said, adding that the level may be higher than before it divested its managed infrastructure services arm Kyndryl in 2021. Today, businesses haven't yet scaled AI to the point where the jobs are being impacted, he said. While about 97% of Indian businesses say they are investing in AI, only 25-26% are moving from experimentation to scale, according to an IBM study. The top challenge is AI governance . 'That ties back to the lack of trust-can you really trust the data that is being used? Can you trust the models? Can you trust the provenance of models? Can you ensure that there is no bias that has crept into these models?' said Patel. IBM has been investing in 'client engineering' to run proofs of concepts (POCs) to demonstrate solutions rather than simply talking about them, he said. 'Now, banks and public sector units and others that we have been working with, they are moving into getting their data platforms organised so that they can take advantage of AI,' said Patel. 'That is another phase of transformation. Digital transformation (in) core banking was done, but now core banking has become stale. What do you do with it to actually get to the next phase?'

Infosys CEO Salil Parekh's salary up 22% to Rs 80 crore

Bengaluru: Infosys CEO Salil Parekh saw a 22% increase in his compensation, reaching Rs 80.6 crore in the 2024–25 year, up from Rs 66.2 crore in the previous year. The largest portion of his pay came from stock option perquisites, which amounted to Rs 49.5 crore, while his bonus stood at Rs 23 crore and his base salary was Rs 7.4 crore. While the average salary hike for Infosys employees in India was 12%, Parekh received a 22% hike, highlighting the disparity between chief executive officer and employee compensation in the IT industry, which continues to expand. His peer, TCS CEO K Krithivasan, took home a salary of Rs 26.5 crore in the 2024-25 financial year, a 4.6% increase from Rs 25.3 crore in the previous year. His compensation included a basic pay of Rs 1.3 crore, Rs 2.1 crore in benefits and perquisites, and Rs 23 crore as commissions. Wipro CEO Srini Pallia received total compensation of $6.2 million, comprising equal portions of $1.7 million each in salary and commission, alongside $2.8 million in additional benefits and $68,850 as long-term compensation. Infact, Parekh's compensation is 752 times more than the median remuneration of Rs 10.7 lakh in the 2024-25 financial year. The median compensation rose 9.6% compared to Rs 9.7 lakh in the previous year. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Encontre voos low-cost Voos | Anúncios de Pesquisa Saiba Mais Undo Infosys hired 15,000 freshers in the last fiscal year, bringing its total workforce to over 3.2 lakh employees, with women making up 39% of the staff. Parekh said that to assist its clients with AI, Infosys has built a repository of AI agents. These agents improve productivity in areas such as code generation, IT operations, bill-to-cash, and quote-to-order. "Data is another foundational element for AI. Our capabilities in data architecture and managing structured and unstructured data give our clients confidence to use their data for enterprise AI deployment," he wrote in a letter to shareholders published in the 2024-25 annual report. Infosys chairman Nandan Nilekani said the world is navigating an unprecedented era of uncertainty, marked by converging global trends that challenge traditional business fundamentals. Geopolitical shifts are fragmenting the global market into distinct blocs, demanding strategic navigation and diversification. Evolving tariffs and regional trade rules are further reshaping supply chains. "Supply chains will continue to shift as tariffs become another form of arbitrage," he wrote in a letter to shareholders. "As geopolitics becomes front and centre in our lives, we are having to take cognisance of the world not as one single global market but as fragmented blocs and countries. This means making strategic choices and even navigating between these blocs. Covid brought into focus the critical and pressing need to de-risk our supply chain and build viable alternatives. It was no longer enough to deliver just-in-time; we also had to factor in just-in-case. Now tariffs are further driving home the point that we need to diversify our sourcing," he said. Nilekani said the advent of AI with all its possibilities and potential creates another arc of uncertainty. "As enterprises look at applying AI to every aspect of the business, some long standing challenges will become imperative and self-evident to firms." He said the need to modernise legacy systems and the need to create data architecture so that all the firm's data is consumable by AI, in a holistic manner, can no longer be put off. "Firms will need to have an AI foundry for rapid innovation and an AI factory to scale successful innovations across the enterprise. While embracing AI will bring a goldmine of opportunities, it will not be entirely without some foreseeable risk."

Chennai metro installs longest precast u girder at ramapuram and plans corridor extension

On Monday, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) marked a new milestone with the installation of the country's longest precast U-girder — a 33.33m span — at Ramapuram, as part of Phase 2 Corridor 5 (Madhavaram-Sholinganallur). This surpasses the previous national record of 31m held by Bengaluru Metro. While most girders in Chennai measure about 25m, with 30m spans seen along OMR, this achievement was realised in collaboration with general consultant AEON and contractor L&T. U-girders are large, concrete beams positioned between two pillars to support metro tracks and enable faster construction, improved load handling, and quieter train operations, especially beneficial in dense urban stretches such as Ramapuram. Typically, longer spans at traffic junctions and U-turns are built using steel girders to accommodate future road widening. However, CMRL opted for a longer U-girder outside the L&T headquarters, combining structural efficiency with aesthetic design. "This will also help us cut costs to nearly half of what a steel girder would require," says CMRL Director (Projects) T Archunan. Casting the 225-tonne girder required specially fabricated moulds and complex pre-tensioning processes to ensure quality. To transport each girder from the Kolapancheri casting yard 18km away, L&T deployed multi-axle trailers and secured police permission to divert traffic and clear hindrances en route. Once onsite, the installation process was completed within five days. CMRL officials confirmed that similar long-span U-girders would be considered in future alignments to optimise cost and execution timelines. In a related development, the Tamil Nadu govt granted in-principle approval to extend Chennai Metro Phase-II Corridor 4 (Light House-Poonamalle) to Parandur in two stages, aimed at connecting the upcoming greenfield airport and the intercity bus terminal at Kuthambakkam. According to a govt order dated May 30, the project will span 52.94 km and be executed in two phases: Phase-I (Poonamallee–Sunguvarchatram, 27.9 km) was cleared for implementation at an estimated ₹8,779 crore. The detailed project report, prepared by Aarvee Associates and submitted by CMRL, was approved by the state and recommended to the Centre for funding on an equity-sharing basis and through external loan assistance.
