Disillusioned non-Malays may punish PH without backing PN, says Ramasamy
Urimai chairman P Ramasamy said it is also a mistake to treat all non-Malay voters, like Chinese, Indians and others, as if they think and vote the same way.
PETALING JAYA : Even if non-Malay voters do not directly back PAS or Perikatan Nasional (PN), former Penang deputy chief minister P Ramasamy has warned that their frustration with Pakatan Harapan (PH) could still carry serious political consequences.
He said political discontent among non-Malay voters may manifest not through outright support for PN, but in other forms of political disengagement.
'Under the right socio-political conditions, there is no guarantee that the non-Malays won't abandon a hypocritical or ineffective PH-led coalition.
'It could emerge in other forms — lower turnout, protest votes, or support for alternative opposition figures,' the Urimai chairman said in a statement today.

He was commenting on Wong Chin Huat's analysis in an FMT report, in which Wong said PAS's bid to woo non-Malay voters dissatisfied with PH was unlikely to succeed due to the party's entrenched 'zero-sum' political framing that alienates non-Muslims.
Wong had said PAS's political messaging often presents gains for non-Muslims as losses for Muslims. This narrative tends to alienate non-Malay voters, he added.
However, Ramasamy argued that such analysis may overlook the diversity and evolving sentiments within the non-Malay electorate.
'Lumping all non-Malays into a single bloc is a form of essentialism that flattens the political distinctions among Chinese, Indians and other minorities.
'Their political calculations, sentiments and thresholds of tolerance differ.'
Ramasamy said Chinese voters may reject PAS over ideological and cultural differences. However, he noted a shift in thinking among some Indian voters — not because they support PN, but because they're frustrated with the PH-led government.
He went on to say that non-Malay voters are not 'blindly loyal' and any support for PAS or PN would depend on whether the coalition moves beyond narrow ethno-religious politics to address minority concerns meaningfully.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh is pushing the government to reinstate the Goods and Services Tax (GST), saying it is a better and more effective taxation system than the current Sales and Services Tax (SST). He said although the 6 per cent GST previously implemented was criticised for burdening the people, the current system is even more taxing. 'Previously, the six per cent GST was said to burden the people,' he said in a Facebook post today. 'Now, people have to pay SST – 5 or 10 per cent sales tax plus 6 per cent service tax – in addition to a reduction in the number of taxable goods from 8,084 items to only 1,813 items.' 'Our suggestion to the government is to reintroduce the GST, which is far better and more effective. 'Don't be ashamed or hesitant to admit that the previous GST policy was better and did not burden the people,' he said. He also dismissed the idea that the Pakatan Harapan manifesto – which had promised to abolish GST – should be seen as set in stone. 'Don't just use the excuse that the manifesto to abolish GST is a holy book. 'What matters is that the people are not burdened and taxes can be collected efficiently,' he said. The Barisan Nasional government introduced the GST on April 1, 2015, and it was abolished on June 1, 2018 when the first PH administration was voted into power.

Anwar announces RM255m upgrades for Lumut navy base, including specialist clinic and jetty revamp
LUMUT, June 15 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today announced several project allocations approved for the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) Base in Lumut, aimed at improving the well-being and welfare of security personnel. He said RM65 million has been allocated for the construction of a specialist clinic complex and the upgrading of the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) Hospital at the base. Also approved are several key infrastructure projects, including the upgrading of the 33kV high-voltage distribution system, with an allocation of RM100 million; the replacement of the Bulk Fuel Installation (BFI) operational tanks at RM23.3 million; and the upgrading of the operational jetty at the Lumut Base, allocated RM66.5 million. 'I urge the State Secretary present here to immediately implement the construction of the specialist clinic complex and the upgrading of the Lumut ATM Hospital, for the well-being of RMN personnel,' he said. Anwar said this during the Lumut navy personnel's 'Kenduri Rakyat' programme, held in conjunction with the Perak Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025, here, today. Also present were Communications Minister, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Navy chief, Datuk Zulhelmy Ithnain.
