Local pharmacies see surge in patients amid Rite Aid closures
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Local pharmacies are seeing a surge in patients searching for a new place to fill their prescriptions after Rite Aid announced 68 locations in Western New York will close their doors.
'Very stressful times. Naturally we're fielding a lot of telephone calls. We're prepared for it,' said Bradley Arthur, owner of Black Rock Pharmacy. 'This hasn't come as a complete surprise to us.'
The independent pharmacy, located on Tonawanda Street in Buffalo's Black Rock neighborhood, is one of the many places filling the void.
Kenmore Prescription Center on Delaware Avenue has a sign out front welcoming patients who have to transfer pharmacies.
Supervising pharmacist Nicole Rutowski said the center has increased its staff, added more hours and updated their technology to handle more customers.
'Since the news came out it's been busier, we have calls every day, we have people stopping in every day trying to figure out what pharmacy they can go to,' Rutowski said. 'Unfortunately, for some people, it's limited. If you have Independent Health, CVS doesn't accept it. That's not an option, so you've got to find somewhere else.'
The number one tip pharmacists have for those affected by the Rite Aid closures is to not wait until the last minute when you need a prescription to find a new pharmacy.
'People are scared out there right now, understandably so, but my answer to that is, if you get out in front of it and properly plan, there is a solution and the solution could be right in your neighborhood,' Arthur said.

Take On Me Singer Morten Harket Said He Has Parkinson's Disease
Morten Harket, who for more than 40 years has been the frontman of the Grammy-nominated Norwegian pop trio a-ha, confirmed this week that he has Parkinson's disease. Harket, 65, made the announcement Wednesday by sharing an article written by music journalist and author Jan Omdahl on a-ha's official website. In it, the singer-songwriter said he'd been experiencing vocal issues as a result of his condition, and admitted he was unsure about a return to the concert stage. 'The problems with my voice are one of many grounds for uncertainty about my creative future,' he said. Though Harket said he had 'no problem accepting the diagnosis,' he added, 'I'm trying the best I can to prevent my entire system from going into decline. It's a difficult balancing act between taking the medication and managing its side effects. There's so much to weigh up when you're emulating the masterful way the body handles every complex movement, or social matters and invitations, or day-to-day life in general.' A native of Kongsberg, Norway, Harket formed a-ha with keyboardist Magne Furuholmen and guitarist Paul Waaktaar-Savoy in 1982. Three years later, the band catapulted to international fame with their breakout smash, ' Take On Me.' The song's success was buoyed by its now-iconic music video, which combined live-action performance footage with pencil-sketch animation. Though a-ha never replicated the success of 'Take On Me' on a global scale, the band continued to release music throughout the '80s and '90s. In 1991, they broke the world record for paid attendance at a rock concert when they performed before more than 198,000 fans at Brazil's Rock in Rio festival. Their 11th studio album, True North, was unveiled in 2022. There is no cure for Parkinson's, a neurodegenerative disease that can cause muscle stiffness, impaired speech and uncontrolled movement. The disease can be revealed by a mere tremor of the hand, according to the Mayo Clinic. Furuholmen reacted to Harket's announcement with a heartfelt post on Instagram. Acknowledging he'd known about his bandmate's diagnosis 'for some time,' he said the news 'brings sadness,' but stressed 'there is also a lot of gratitude: for all the amazing memories, for how our combined creative efforts as a band have been so generously embraced by the world, and for how lucky we are that people continue to find meaning, hope and joy in our shared musical legacy.' In his chat with Omdahl, Harket said he didn't expect to regain 'full technical control' over his vocals, but had nonetheless been working on new songs 'that I've got great belief in, and I feel the lyrics, especially, have something of a different aspect of me in them.' United Archives / United Archives via Getty Images 'I'm not sure if I'll be able to finish them for release,' he continued. 'Time will tell if they make it. I really like the idea of just going for it, as a Parkinson's patient and an artist, with something completely outside the box. It's all up to me, I just have to get this out of the way first.'

Rite Aid Closes More Stores In Bankruptcy Filing
Pharmacy chain Rite Aid has announced more store closures as part of its bankruptcy filing. The company has steadily increased its store closures since filing for bankruptcy earlier this year. Now, that total has approached 500 locations, with more closures expected as the company moves to sell assets. Confident Investing Starts Here: Easily unpack a company's performance with TipRanks' new KPI Data for smart investment decisions Receive undervalued, market resilient stocks right to your inbox with TipRanks' Smart Value Newsletter Rite Aid's plan to sell assets during its bankruptcy means it's likely the company doesn't expect to emerge from it. This could result in the permanent closure of all Rite Aid stores, though that's not a guarantee. More details will likely be announced as it continues through the bankruptcy process. The Rite Aid store closures aren't unexpected. The pharmacy chain has struggled for years, with its latest bankruptcy filing being the second one in as many years. The company's stock was also removed from public markets after its first bankruptcy. CVS and WBA Will Benefit from Rite Aid's Failure The Rite Aid bankruptcy is a boon to CVS Health (CVS) and Walgreens (WBA) as its store closures reduce the competition in the pharmacy sector. This should also increase the foot traffic at their stores, potentially increasing sales from consumers who wander their aisles while prescriptions are filled. CVS and WBA stock have both seen slight gains on Wednesday in light of the Rite Aid store closures announcement. Turning to the TipRanks stock comparison tool, traders will see which of these two stocks is likely the better investment. CVS appears to be the clear winner of the two with an analysts' consensus Strong Buy rating and a $79.94 price target, representing a potential 24.96% upside. For comparison, Walgreens stock has a consensus Hold rating and a $12.38 price target, suggesting a possible 9.85% upside for the shares.
