Racing driver Pieter Joubert tragically killed in Simola Hillclimb crash
Driver Pieter Joubert passed away while competing in his modified Lotus Exige.
The 2025 Simola Hillclimb motorsport event has taken a tragic turn, with the passing of seasoned competitor Pieter Joubert during an accident on Sunday morning.
Joubert was performing his first qualifying run of the day when his yellow Mercedes-AMG V8-powered Lotus Exige veered off the course and crashed into trees.
Witnesses said it appeared as if a component of his car broke.
On-site emergency crews attended to the scene immediately, but sadly Joubert was pronounced deceased on the scene.
Organisers later announced that the Hillclimb King of the Hill event would resume at 1pm on Sunday, at the request of Joubert's family, who insisted that the show must go on in his honour.
'We are exceptionally saddened by this incident, and our thoughts and condolences are with Pieter's family, team and friends,' says Ian Shrosbree, MD of Knysna Speed Festival.
'Pieter's brothers Dawie and Charl, who have also been competing, have expressed their wishes that we continue with the event.'
Joubert was a seasoned competitor in the Simola Hillclimb event and in Saturday's third qualifying session he was fastest in class B7, and 13th quickest overall in his #30 Lotus sports car.
The Simola Hillclimb event is currently in its 15th year; this is the first time that a competitor has passed away while competing in the competition.

Volkswagen asks South Africans to choose a name for its new SUV: these are the four options
Tengo, Tavi, Tiva or Tion? What will VWSA call its new budget SUV? Image: Supplied Volkswagen South Africa is planning to build a new entry-level SUV at its Kariega plant in the Eastern Cape from 2027. Although the local division hasn't officially unveiled the product, all the evidence is pointing to it being closely based on the new Volkswagen Tera, a product of Brazil. VWSA CEO Martina Biene previously told the media that the product would be adapted for the African market and would also receive a unique name. Now it's time for South Africans to choose that name, with the company posting an online survey calling on members of the public to choose between four names: Tengo, Tavi, Tiva and Tion. But the four options are not just random alphabet soup: VWSA has put a great deal of thought into the names and the meaning behind them: Tengo: Signifies rich cultural significance in African languages and describes qualities like strength, resilience and purpose. Tavi: A gender neutral word meaning good or beloved. In Latin, it also means eight. Tiva: This word means nature in Hebrew and is also associated with vitality, life, and energy. Volkswagen's Polo was almost called the Bonito or the Mini Golf, as we touched on in our recent story on the Polo's interesting history. For the record, most IOL team members voted for 'Tion' in our internal poll, although all four names received votes. What to expect from the new SUV VWSA has already completed the necessary upgrades to its Kariega plant, to build the new 'AO SUV Entry' model, as it is code-named. Image: Supplied The Brazilian version is offered with normally aspirated and turbocharged versions of its 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine. While the 1.0 TSI is practically a given for local introduction, it's likely that South Africa's entry-level models will use the current normally aspirated 1.4-litre MPI engine, which is locally produced. In terms of pricing, the new model will slot beneath the T-Cross, which currently starts at R399,900. This new SUV's success will be crucial to the future of the Kariega plant, as the current Polo, which is exported to major markets such as Europe in prolific volumes, is likely to be discontinued at the end of this decade. Although the new SUV will be exported into Africa, it remains unclear whether the locally built model will be shipped beyond the continent. IOL

Pricing sticker comes off AMG jabbed Mercedes-AMG CLE 53
Electrified 3.0-litre turbo straight-six swaps plug-in hybrid assistance, for mild-hybrid 'help' capable of producing an additional 17kW/205Nm for short spells. The new Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 is said to combine the best of two worlds — the agility and sportiness of the C-Class with the space and status of the E-Class, and you would have to be blind not to like what you see here. Electric but no plug I don't want to get over technical and lose you in the details, because so many buyers switch off immediately, for lack of better words, the moment anybody starts to talk about electric cars. Whereas the new AMG E53 is a plug-in hybrid that must be plugged in to be fully charged as the name suggests, the AMG CLE 53 is a mild-hybrid, and it does not need to, nor cannot not be plugged in to be fully charged, and it charges itself up from the conventional petrol engine and via brake regeneration. ALSO READ: Mercedes-Benz CLE leaves AMG finishing school as new AMG CLE 53 As with the E53, the CLE 53 makes use of a 3.0-litre straight-six turbocharged engine, but omits the plug-in hybrid for a 48-volt mild-hybrid system aided further by a new exhaust gas-driven turbo and electric compressor. The result is 330kW/560Nm, but for 12 seconds, an overboost function which lifts torque to 600 Nm is activated. What's more, the mild-hybrid system, known as EQ Boost, adds 17kW/205Nm of its own for short bursts. Interior sports a series of AMG bespoke fittings. Picture: Mercedes-AMG According to Mercedes-AMG, this means a top speed of 250km/h or 270km/h with the optional AMG Driver's Package included, and 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds. As with the E53, drive in the CLE 53 is directed to all four wheels through the 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive via the nine-speed MCT transmission. When driving moderately and in situations where all-wheel drive is not required, the front axle is completely decoupled. This increases efficiency. Buyers have the choice of the AMG Carbon and Night exterior packages. The standard wheels are 19-inch alloy wheels, though 20-inch wheels can be had as an option. And in drift mode, the car's programmed as a rear-wheel drive vehicle across the entire speed range. Typical visual identifying features are the long hood embedded in the front end with two powerful power domes. The sloping windshield and the elongated roof, which slopes towards the rear, also reference this. The passenger cell, which is set far back, leads to the sporty, short rear via the rear window, which is also flat.
