Ukraine receives 1200 soldiers' bodies from Russia

Ukraine has repatriated more bodies of fallen soldiers in line with an agreement reached during peace talks in Istanbul between Russian and Ukrainian delegations, Ukrainian officials say.
Ukraine's Co-ordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War said in a statement that Russia returned 1200 bodies and "according to the Russian side, the bodies belong to Ukrainian citizens, in particular military personnel".
The repatriation of the bodies was carried out with the help of Ukraine's Armed Forces, the country's Security Service, the Interior Ministry and other government agencies.
Forensic experts will now work to identify the remains, the statement said.
The handover - the second to take place this week - was brokered by the International Red Cross, the staff responsible for prisoner of war issues in Kyiv said.
The repatriation of the bodies marks one of the largest returns of remains since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago.
Earlier this week, Russia returned 1212 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers and received 27 bodies of its own killed troops.
The agreement to exchange prisoners of war and the bodies of fallen soldiers was the only tangible outcome of the talks in Istanbul that took place June 2.
Russia and Ukraine conducted a POW swap on Thursday that included severely wounded and gravely ill captives, although the sides did not report the numbers.
In addition to agreeing to exchange POWs and bodies of fallen soldiers, the two sides traded memorandums at the talks that set out conditions for a ceasefire.
However, the inclusion of clauses that both sides see as non-starters make any quick deal unlikely.
Despite discussions of a potential truce in the war, Russian forces in recent days have launched waves of drones and missiles at Ukraine, with a record bombardment of almost 500 drones on Monday and a wave of 315 drones and seven missiles overnight on Tuesday.
Ukraine's air force said on Friday that Russia fired 55 Shahed and decoy drones and four ballistic missiles at Ukraine overnight.
The air force said air defences neutralised 43 drones.
Russia's Defence Ministry said on Friday that its air defences downed 125 Ukrainian drones over several Russian regions and the annexed Crimea region late on Thursday and early on Friday.

Middle East conflict, Ukraine-Russia war: What Donald Trump discussed with Vladimir Putin during 'birthday' call

Donald Trump says he and Russian President Vladimir Putin both agree the war between Israel and Iran "should end" amid rising tensions in the Middle East. President Trump has confirmed the Russian leader called him on Saturday to wish him a happy 79th birthday, with the phone chat lasting about one hour. The president said during the phone call he and Putin discussed various issues, including the escalating conflict in the Middle East as well as the Ukraine-Russia war. "President Putin called this morning to very nicely wish me a happy birthday, but to more importantly, talk about Iran, a country he knows very well," President Trump wrote via Truth Social. "We talked at length. Much less time was spent talking about Russia (and) Ukraine, but that will be for next week. "He is doing the planned prisoner swaps - large numbers of prisoners are being exchanged, immediately, from both sides. "The call lasted approximately one hour. He feels, as do I, this war in Israel-Iran should end, to which I explained, his war should also end." The phone call comes as Iran and Israel exchange rocket fire on the weekend. Kremlin spokesperson Yuri Ushakov said Putin condemned the Israeli military operation against Iran and "expressed serious concern about the possible escalation of the conflict". Before Israel's attack on Iran, the White House were in the midst of negotiations to seal a nuclear deal with Tehran. President Trump looked at negotiating a fresh new deal on his terms after his first-term administration pulled out of Obama's backed Iran nuclear deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. A planned meeting between the US and Iran was supposed to go ahead on Sunday in Muscat, Oman. The talks have now been stalled following Israel's attack. Meanwhile, Mr Trump has tried to get peace talks rolling on another front with Mr Putin to end the war in Ukraine. After Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the ongoing war has no signs of stopping, with an escalation of attacks continuing. In May, a meeting was planned for discussions between Russia and Ukraine in Turkey. However, Mr Putin refused to show up, leading to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Putin,Trump, discuss Mideast, Ukraine, on birthday call

Russian President Vladimir Putin has had a 50 minute phone call with US President Donald Trump focusing on hostilities between Israel and Iran and calling for efforts to bring them to an end. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said Putin condemned the Israeli military operation against Iran and expressed concern about the risks of escalation. Trump, in his account on Truth Social, said most of the discussion centred on the Middle East, but that he also told Putin Russia's war in Ukraine should end. "Vladimir Putin condemned Israel's military operation against Iran and expressed serious concern about a possible escalation of the conflict, which would have unpredictable consequences for the entire situation in the Middle East," Ushakov told reporters. Ushakov said Trump described events in the Middle East as "very alarming". But the two leaders said they did not rule out a return to the negotiating track on Iran's nuclear program, Ushakov said. Ushakov said US negotiators were ready to hold further talks with Iranian representatives, with Oman as mediator. The latest round, scheduled for Sunday in Oman, has been cancelled. The Kremlin aide said Putin told Trump Russia stood by proposals to ease tension and resolve issues concerning Iran's nuclear program. "The Russian president recalled that prior to the current rise in tension our side had proposed concrete steps intended to find mutually acceptable agreements during talks between US and Iranian representatives about the Iranian nuclear program," Ushakov said. Trump's account of the conversation included what amounted to his first explicit appeal for hostilities in Ukraine 0to end. "The call lasted approximately 1 hour," Trump wrote. "He feels, as do I, this war in Israel-Iran should end, to which I explained, his war should also end." Trump said he and Putin mostly discussed the Middle East and spent "much less time" talking about the war in Ukraine. Trump hinted at follow-up discussions on the war in Ukraine in the coming week. Ushakov also said the presidents expressed satisfaction "at their personal relations which have allowed for them to speak in a business-like manner to seek solutions to issues that are bilateral or on the international agenda, however complex those issues might be". Putin also congratulated Trump on his 79th birthday. 'Dire consequences': Foreign Minister Penny Wong calls for urgent de-escalation in Israel-Iran conflict

Foreign Minister Penny Wong has urged both Iran and Israel to immediately de-escalate hostilities amid mounting fears of a wider regional war. Iran and Israel have continued to trade rocket fire over the weekend, after senior Iranian military officials and nuclear scientists were killed in targeted strikes. Ms Wong described the situation 'perilous' and said the Albanese government was urging restraint on all sides. 'Obviously this is a very perilous situation. It's a very risky situation,' she told the ABC's Insiders program on Sunday. 'We urge de-escalation, we urge restraint, we urge dialogue and diplomacy, and that call has been reflected by like-minded and partners.' Ms Wong did not directly comment on Israel's initial pre-emptive strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, expressing a cautious stance on criticising its military actions. 'Israel has a right to self-defence. It does have a right to self-defence,' Ms Wong said. 'What I would say is the key issue is not, you know, 'Is there a threat?' There is. We all know that. 'It's whether or not in response to it we increase the risk of regional escalation and that would have dire consequences to the people of the region.' Her comments come after a deadly series of strikes and counter-strikes between Israel and Iran, triggered by Israel's bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities on Friday. Iran claimed the attacks killed senior military officials and scientists, and retaliated with more than 100 drones aimed at Israel. The violence escalated further over the weekend and Iran has accused Israel of striking the major Shahran oil depot northwest of Tehran. The Israeli Air Force confirmed it was 'attacking military targets in Tehran, in parallel with the activity of intercepting missiles launched from Iran'. Israeli Defence Force International Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani also said the military was attempting to block Iranian strikes. "While the IDF is operating to intercept missiles launched from Iran, the IAF is currently striking military targets in Tehran," he wrote on X on Saturday night. Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz took to social media to declare "Tehran is burning" not long after news broke of the attack on the oil facility. The conflict has sparked concern for various world leaders, including President Trump who confirmed he discussed the conflict with Russian President Vladimir Putin. "The call lasted approximately one hour. He feels, as do I, this war in Israel-Iran should end, to which I explained, his war (with Ukraine) should also end," he said. The Kremlin has confirmed the call took place between the two leaders, in which President Trump claims Putin wished him a happy 79th birthday. Kremlin spokesperson Yuri Ushakov said Putin condemned the Israeli military operation against Iran and expressed concern about the risks of escalation. President Trump's comments mark the first time he has explicitly called for an end to hostilities between Israel and Iran since it began late last week. Iran said 78 people were killed on the first day of Israel's campaign, including 60 when a missile brought down a 14-storey apartment block in Tehran. Iran had launched its own retaliatory missile volley on Friday night, killing at least three people in Israel. Israel's ambulance service said a woman in her 20s was killed and 13 other people injured when a missile struck a two-story house in northern Israel. -with Reuters
