State title run earns Laue a Player of the Year nomination

Yahoo22-04-2025

CASTLEWOOD, S.D. (KELO) — Our first finalist for boys basketball Player of the Year is Bryon Laue, who helped lead Castlewood to a state championship.
'Ever since my freshman year when they first made it, it's kind of just been something that I've wanted to have the feeling of,' Castlewood senior Bryon Laue said. 'I've never gotten it, but to finally get it, it was just amazing to see that all of the hard work had paid off.'
Castlewood claimed their first state championship since 2001, following three dominant wins over Lyman, Wessington Springs and Viborg-Hurley. Perhaps their best three game stretch of the season.
'As a coaching staff, we've sat down after the tournament and watched the games on TV,' Paul Raasch said. 'We were like, 'holy cow, it looks a lot easy on TV, than it felt like as it was going'.'
Much of the Warriors' success came from senior standout, Bryon Laue. He posted more than 16 points and 12 rebounds per game.
'Talent wise and psychically he's a tremendous player, but I think the thing that separates Bryon this year from a lot of other players in the state, was his focus and dedication to the goal that we had as a team,' Raasch said.
A 24-2 season helped Castlewood hoist their first state title trophy in 24 years, while also earning Laue a nomination for Player of the Year.
'Bryon doesn't like the spotlight. He defers to his teammates. Every time we do something like this, he hesitates a little bit,' Raasch said.
'I don't really look at personal goals that much and personal accomplishments,' Laue said. 'I just like to think back to the things we did as a team this year and I think that's really the most important thing.'
Laue has committed to play at USF next season.
We'll unveil our 2025 Players of the Year in our Player of the Year Special airing Saturday at 9:30 a.m. on KELO-TV.

Vision Fund Citizen Committee has nominated 14 future projects

Rapid City, S.D. (KELO) — 14 out of 29 projects have been nominated by Rapid City's Vision Fund Citizen Committee. They have a budget of $12 million and will now await the City Council's decision. 45 citations issued for long vehicles parked downtown The Civic Center, now named The Monument, the BMX Park upgrades, and the South and West Community Gym Centers are just a few of the over 100 projects that have been funded through the Vision Fund. The current Citizens Committee was tasked with allocating just over $12 million, with the 29 applicants requesting more than $74 Million in Vision Fund allocations. 'All of these projects, and I can't stress this enough, all of these projects are sensational. They all would have a significant impact on our community and I wish we could fund them all. I wish the mayor would give me $74 million. We did the absolute best I think we could do,' Citizens Committee Chairman John Kaiser said. This committee was formed around mid-spring and were able to tour and discuss these projects thoroughly. 'Great Vision Fund Committee as well as city staff that provided support and really all of the city staff support altogether. You see a lot of parks projects, a lot of sports projects meeting a lot of needs throughout the city. I think it hits the heart and attention of what we wanted for this and so I'm very pleased,' Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun said. Sports projects were highly requested with over 30% being in that category. 'I think that when you look at sports as a whole, whether it's like the skateboarding, which is something completely unique, or baseball or soccer or whatever, it was just for us as a committee, those were the ones we felt were also in the scope of what citizens should recommend,' Kaiser said. One project request that was not recommended was a new indoor sports complex. That project requested $10 million, as new facilities for athletes are needed in town. This nomination list will now rest in the hands of the Rapid City Council after the Vision Fund Citizens Committee's presentation on Monday night. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Bruno Fernandes snubs £200m Al-Hilal offer to stay at Manchester United

Bruno Fernandes has turned down a lucrative offer from Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal, opting to continue his career in Europe. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Manchester United captain rejected a contract that would have earned him close to £200 million over three years. Advertisement Despite the financial appeal, Fernandes has decided to remain at the top level of European football. Al-Hilal were prepared to pay United around £100 million for the Portugal international, who remains under contract at Old Trafford until 2027. They hoped to make Fernandes a marquee addition ahead of their Club World Cup campaign. The deal was complicated by reluctance from Fernandes' family, who were unconvinced about a move to Saudi Arabia. Despite Al-Hilal's efforts to sway the player, including outlining a project involving Victor Osimhen, Theo Hernandez, and incoming manager Simone Inzaghi, Fernandes' stance did not shift. Advertisement The 30-year-old has had a standout individual campaign, registering 19 goals and 18 assists across all competitions. His performances earned him the club's Player of the Year award for a joint-record fourth time, even as United endured their worst Premier League finish in history, ending the season in 15th place. The club's difficult season has led to speculation about potential sales to balance the books following their failure to qualify for the Champions League. However, new manager Ruben Amorim has publicly backed Fernandes, insisting he believes the player wants to stay. Speaking after United's 3–1 win over Hong Kong in pre-season, Amorim said: 'He is saying no to a lot of things. He needs to be in the best league in the world. Advertisement 'When you talk to him, you have that feeling he wants to continue for sure with Manchester United.' Fernandes' decision will be a relief to fans who fear a fire sale following the club's recent struggles. However, the offer from Al-Hilal reflects a growing trend among Saudi clubs to target top European talent with eye-watering proposals. Fernandes remains at the heart of United's rebuild, but with the summer transfer window still open, the saga may not be entirely over.
