KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman has made clear that there is no official travel restriction on Fahmi Reza amid claims from the artist that he had been prevented from travelling abroad.
The explanation came about following a statement from the Prime Minister's Office yesterday, asking the police to look into the matter.
Fahmi, who bills himself as a 'political graphic designer', had said that he was stopped by immigration officers at KL Inter-national Airport 2 (KLIA2) on Saturday when he wanted to board a flight to Singapore.
But Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain indicated yesterday that there is no official travel restriction on Fahmi, though his name is on a movement monitoring list for internal records and reference purposes by the police due to ongoing investigations involving him.
'However, it must be emphasised that this list does not imply any restrictions but is part of standard monitoring procedures implemented by the authorities,' he said in a statement, as reported by Bernama.
Razarudin said the confusion occurred during the exit clearance process on Saturday, resulting in the erroneous issuance of a movement restriction order, adding that the matter is being reviewed with appropriate steps to be taken to refine existing procedures.
He said the police remained committed to protecting and respecting the freedom of movement of every Malaysian 'and the individual concerned is free to travel in and out of the country as usual, subject to any regulations set by the Immigration Department and other relevant laws'.
Earlier yesterday, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement that the government upholds individual freedom as long as they do not compromise national security or violate existing laws.
'As such, the police must provide further clarification regarding this matter,' said the statement.
On Saturday, Fahmi wrote on Facebook that he had wanted to go to Singapore for a two-day trip to attend a concert.
However, he said he was stopped at the immigration counter at KLIA2 and was told that Bukit Aman has not permitted him to go overseas.
Following Razarudin's statement yesterday, Fahmi issued a response, saying that the explanation from the various authorities over the matter indicated that they were pointing fingers at one another.
'I do not see any party from the government being brave enough to take responsibility for their mistake which restricted my freedom to travel,' he said.
'It is easy to say that there is no official restriction. But the reality is I got barred. I still could not travel abroad. I have been denied my right as a citizen,' he said.
'You always tell me to use the right channel, right? OK, we meet in court,' he said.

Perak PMR 2025 To Offer Over 200 Public Services At Lumut Waterfront On June 13-15

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 (Bernama) -- The Perak MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 will be held on a large scale at Lumut Waterfront from June 13 to 15, featuring more than 200 government services for the public. Ministry of Communications, deputy secretary-general (Telecommunications Infrastructure), Mano Verabathran, said the event will involve various federal and state agencies, including the MADANI Sale initiative, which offers essential items at discounts of 10 to 30 per cent. 'Visitors can take advantage of the discounted goods and also participate in walk-in interviews. Ten companies from different sectors will be present, offering around 1,000 job vacancies. We welcome job seekers to attend,' he said during Bernama TV's Apa Khabar Malaysia programme today. Mano added that 36 booths will be set up to provide a wide range of government services, enabling visitors to carry out official matters during the three-day event. 'This initiative is part of the government's continuous effort to bring services and policies closer to the people, while fostering greater public trust in the country's direction,' he said. He also noted that the programme offers the public a unique opportunity to engage directly with multiple government agencies under one roof. This year, PMR is being held in two formats - large-scale and small-scale events. The first large-scale edition was held in Tawau, Sabah, from May 9 to 11, drawing over 192,000 visitors. Perak is the second state to host the large-scale programme, organised through a strategic collaboration between the Performance Acceleration Coordination Unit (PACU) under the Prime Minister's Department and the Ministry of Higher Education as the lead ministry. PMR 2025 in Lumut, themed 'Pendidikan Tinggi, Pemacu Negara MADANI', will run from 9am to 10pm on Friday and Saturday, and until 6pm on Sunday.

Malaysia, Poland poised to deepen ties in halal, defence, green hydrogen and digital tech

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Poland should showcase the capacity of both countries to work together in key sectors such as the halal industry, defence, digital technology and green hydrogen, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. At a joint press conference with President of Poland Andrzej Duda during Duda's official visit to Malaysia, Anwar said Poland's strength in modern and advanced technology makes it an increasingly important partner in the European Union and the region. "We should showcase the capacity of both Malaysia and Poland to work together in the fields that we have discussed, including the halal industry, and with your strength in modern technology," he said. Anwar noted that Poland's last high-level visit to Malaysia was in 1999, and since then, the country has achieved phenomenal growth, particularly in new technology, artificial intelligence, food technology and green energy. "I look forward to enhancing these bilateral relations in defence, food tech, trade, investments, digital technology, renewable energy and your (Poland) new expertise in green hydrogen," he said. The Prime Minister also welcomed the remarkable increase in bilateral trade, noting that Malaysia-Poland trade grew by 19.5 per cent from 2023 to 2024. "The exponential growth in trade is very much welcome -- a 19.5 per cent year-on-year increase from 2023 to 2024 is indeed a remarkable feat that shows the potential in our bilateral trade, investments and overall relations with the Republic of Poland," he added. According to Anwar, both leaders held extensive discussions on enhancing palm oil exports, wood and rubber products, and electrical and electronics collaboration, including exploring green hydrogen initiatives. Meanwhile, Duda, who arrived in Malaysia on June 9, for a three-day official visit, described the visit to Malaysia as significant, noting that Poland has undergone tremendous political and economic transformation since its last presidential visit in 1999. "Malaysia today is our second-largest trade partner in this region, and our bilateral trade has seen exponential growth," he said, adding that he hoped to see greater market access for Polish products in Malaysia. Duda said he had submitted a non-paper to Anwar, prepared by Poland's Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Agriculture, outlining proposals to expand the export of Polish agri-food products to Malaysia, including poultry meat and pork. He also urged Malaysian investors to consider opportunities in Poland, highlighting a wide range of incentives including grants, tax reliefs, preferential loans and workforce training. On energy cooperation, he said Poland is the fifth-largest hydrogen producer in the world and third-largest in the European Union, and is open to broad collaboration with Malaysia in green and renewable energy technologies. "We discussed the potential for research cooperation and development in fuels and hydrogen, and I assured the Prime Minister that Poland has skilled experts and a large market to support such ventures," he added.

Police to tap retired officers' experience for special ops guidebook

KUALA LUMPUR: Federal police are planning to produce a book which documents its special operations to serve as a guide for young officers and personnel. Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the book, which would contain information of its special operations, could help junior officers avoid repeating past mistakes. "To realise this initiative, we will gather information and insights from members of the Retired Senior Police Officers Association (Respa), who had previously been involved in these special operations. "In the Special Branch (SB), we already have books documenting the operations conducted. "For departments like the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), I believe many operations should also be documented to serve as guidance for new officers and personnel. "This is because veteran officers hold a wealth of experience and knowledge. There may be similar operations in the future where the same mistakes could be repeated by new officers," he told reporters after attending the Respa AGM at the Police College today. He said the effort would take time as it requires gathering experiences and detailed accounts from veteran officers. "This initiative should also be undertaken by other departments such as the Internal Security and Public Order Department and the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID). "Personally, many retired senior officers still send me messages from time to time regarding sensitive legal issues and others I often use their input as a guide," he said. Meanwhile, in his speech, Ayob urged Respa members to update their personal information in the PDRM e-Pensioner system, particularly their current address, health status, and emergency contact details. "This is to ensure smooth communication regarding benefits and rewards provided by the government. "I pray that Respa will continue to succeed in its noble mission of safeguarding the welfare and interests of its members. All the contributions and sacrifices made will always be appreciated," he said.
