Scammers using AI to fake my voice and image, says Guan Eng

GEORGE TOWN : Former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng has warned the public about a fake video circulating online that uses artificial intelligence to mimic his voice and image in an apparent investment scam.
Lim, who is also the Air Putih assemblyman, said the video falsely shows him endorsing an investment scheme.
He said the video is fake and generated using AI.
'I want to be absolutely clear, I have never asked anyone to invest in anything. I'm not in business; I'm in politics,' he said at an event in Air Putih today.
The manipulated video is believed to be based on an interview Lim gave over a decade ago. The original recording was in English, but the fake version is in Mandarin.
'That alone is a red flag,' Lim said, noting that the other speaker in the video, Penang Institute executive director Ooi Kee Beng, does not speak Mandarin.
'They took an old clip, altered it to look new, and changed the language.'
Lim said the matter had been reported to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
He urged the public not to believe unsolicited investment messages or videos circulating on platforms like WhatsApp.
Lim said this case highlights the urgent need for public education on AI-generated deepfakes and online scams.
He said scammers are intentionally using trusted public figures to deceive victims as this is at least the fifth time digitally altered videos of him have been produced.
'The early attempts were clearly fake, but this one is more convincing. It's dangerous, especially for the elderly or those who trust me as a public figure,' he said.
'They (scammers) exploit public trust. That's why I need to speak up, to stop people from falling for these scams.
'Always verify with official sources. Refer to my verified statements. I will never ask anyone to invest in anything.'

Some truth to Malays feeling sidelined, says Umno veteran

Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin, a former minister, says the government cannot avoid or ignore the proposed 'Malay unity' movement. PETALING JAYA : An Umno veteran says the unity government must look to regain the confidence of the Malays, following former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's latest effort to unite the Malays and 'restore their political power'. Former minister Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said the government cannot avoid or ignore this movement as there was truth to the notion that the Malay community feels sidelined under the unity government. He added that Mahathir recognised this and was seeking to exploit it for his own political gain. 'Maybe it's merely a matter of perception or imagination (to some parties), but I think that there's truth to it (at the grassroots level). And something needs to be done to regain the confidence of the Malays. 'Whatever excuses we want to give, when you go to the grassroots, the reality is that many Malays feel sidelined, and Mahathir is exploiting that,' he told FMT. Raja Nong Chik claimed that, based on feedback he received, nine out of 10 of his close Malay peers have expressed concern about the fate of the community under the current administration. 'They worry for the future of the Malays, and these are highly-educated guys. We're not even talking about the grassroots level yet. 'However, this doesn't mean they will vote for the opposition just yet, it's just that they want some assurance (that the special privileges of the Malays would be safeguarded,' said the former Lembah Pantai Umno chief. The new Malay unity alliance was launched by Mahathir on Wednesday, with the backing of Perikatan Nasional's major components, PAS and Bersatu, as well as several Malay-based NGOs and academics. Mahathir, a former Umno president who later led Bersatu, Pejuang and Gerakan Tanah Air before leaving all three, said the alliance would not be a formal political party for now but a loose coalition to gather the Malays under one 'big umbrella'. Raja Nong Chik said the government led by Anwar Ibrahim must handle this new political threat wisely to ensure his administration retains the trust of the Malays.

Malaysians at Harvard can continue studies for now, says govt

Currently-enrolled students at Harvard can continue their studies without interruption following a US Federal Court decision to suspend a US government order. (EPA Images pic) PUTRAJAYA : Malaysian students attending Harvard University in the US can continue their studies without interruption for now, the higher education ministry said today. Students in Harvard's September 2025 intake were advised to deal directly with the university and their sponsors to obtain the latest developments before making further decisions. The ministry's announcement comes after a US Federal Court judge provided relief to over 6,800 international students there by granting a temporary restraining order on Washington's attempt to bar most newly-enrolled international students at Harvard from entering the country. 'The decision enables international students, including Malaysians, to continue studying without interruption for the time being,' the ministry said. In a statement, the ministry said it was monitoring developments closely through the Malaysian education unit in Washington and officials have also contacted sponsors and US education officials. The ministry reminded students to update their optional practical training information and to be careful in all actions involving immigration matters. 'For now, no Malaysian student has encountered any problems or issues with their records with the student and exchange visitor programme or any withdrawal of their visa,' the ministry said.

Ex-cop's murder death penalty affirmed as message to police officers

The Court of Appeal upheld the death penalty imposed on Ahmad Rizal Umar for the murder of Kartini Borhan, 27, four years ago. PETALING JAYA : The Court of Appeal said it upheld the death sentence imposed on a former investigating officer for the murder of his lover 14 years ago to convey a clear message to all police officers of the need to uphold the law. Justice Wong Kian Kheong said all officers were required under Section 13 of the Police Act 1967 to take an oath. 'By murdering the deceased, the appellant had betrayed his declaration to 'obey, uphold and maintain' the law,' he said, adding that the bench exercised its sentencing discretion to affirm the punishment on grounds of public interest. Last September, a three-member bench chaired by Justice Supang Lian, sitting in Kota Kinabalu, dismissed Ahmad Rizal Umar's appeal against conviction and sentence for killing Kartini Borhan, 27. Also on the panel hearing the appeal was Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah. Rizal, who held the rank of inspector, committed the offence at an apartment in Taman Andika, Keningau, between 4am and 5am on Sept 29, 2011. Wong delivered his 37-page written grounds earlier this week, paving the way for Rizal, 43, to exercise his automatic final right of appeal to the Federal Court. The judge said Rizal had used violence and great force to kill Kartini with a knife leaving the victim suffering 10 injuries, including a horrific second stab wound. 'After the murder, he attempted to conceal the offence by alleging that Kartini had been killed by an assailant who broke into the premises to rob her. 'Worse still, he had the temerity to make the false police report and had not shown any remorse,' he said. He said Rizal used his police training and work experience as an investigating officer to conceal the crime. According to the facts of the case, Rizal was in Kartini's rented apartment on the day of the incident but made it look as if a robber had broken into the premises and attacked both of them. Wong said a forensic pathologist gave evidence that Rizal's injuries were self-inflicted and not consistent with the consequences of a combative encounter with a robber. The motive for the murder was a love triangle as the deceased was alleged to have been having an affair with another man. In mitigation earlier, lawyer Ram Singh, who was assisted by Chen Wen Jye, asked for Rizal to be imprisoned and whipped, saying he was a first offender and father to two children. In response, deputy public prosecutor Amril Johari called for the death penalty to be retained as the accused was a law enforcement officer who had attacked his victim brutally.
