Lebanon: PM Salam Visits Speaker Berri, Says Doors Open to Hezbollah

Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri received on Monday PM Nawaf Salam, who stressed commitment to the ministerial statement and said that doors are open to Hezbollah. National News Agency (NNA) reported that discussions between Berri and Salam touched on the current general developments, political updates, as well as the reconstruction efforts. Following the meeting at Ain Al-Tineh, Salam told reporters that he has not deviated 'by a single word from what was agreed upon,' responding to accusations that he was not abiding by the ministerial statement. He added that he is committed to reconstruction, noting that the government is mobilizing the necessary support for this. Meanwhile, signaled a willingness for dialogue and engagement with Hezbollah. '(Hezbollah MP) Mohammad Raad and the group are welcome. The doors of my home and the Grand Serail are open,' he said in remarks carried by local media. When asked about the relation with the Lebanese premier last week, Speaker Berri told Lebanese daily Al-Jomhouriya that Salam's tone sets the tone. 'He brings the heat, we'll match it; he stays cool, so will we.'

Damascus stock exchange reopens after 6-month closure

by Naharnet Newsdesk 02 June 2025, 16:06 Trading resumed on the Damascus Securities Exchange Monday after a six-month closure, as Syria's new leaders attempt to shore up the country's battered economy and begin rebuilding after nearly 14 years of civil war. The stock exchange had closed during the chaotic days leading up to the ouster of former President Bashar Assad in a lightning rebel offensive. Syrian Finance Minister Mohammed Yisr Barnieh, who attended the reopening, said that it signals that the country's economy is beginning to recover and that the stock exchange "will operate as a private company and serve as a genuine hub for Syria's economic development, with a strong focus on digital," state-run news agency SANA reported. He said the country's new leaders plan to "facilitate business operations and open doors to promising investment opportunities." The move to reopen comes as international restrictions on Syria's financial systems begin to ease. The United States and Europe both last month announced the lifting of a wide raft of sanctions that had been slapped on Syria under the Assad dynasty's rule. Last week, Syria inked a power deal worth $7 billion with a consortium of Qatari, Turkish and U.S. companies for development of a 5,000-megawatt energy project to revitalize much of Syria's war-battered electricity grid. The consortium led by Qatar's UCC Concession Investments — along with Power International USA and Turkey's Kalyon GES Enerji Yatirimlari, Cengiz Enerji — will develop four combined-cycle gas turbines with a total generating capacity estimated at approximately 4,000 megawatts and a 1,000-megawatt solar power plant.

Hamas Submits Response to US Ceasefire Proposal Following National Consultations

The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) announced on Saturday that it has delivered its official response to the latest ceasefire proposal put forward by US envoy Steve Weitkoff. The response was submitted to mediators after a round of internal consultations, which the movement described as part of its 'high sense of responsibility toward the Palestinian people and their suffering.' In a statement, Hamas said the proposal, as framed, must lead to a permanent ceasefire, the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, and an uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population in the besieged enclave. The group confirmed that, under the framework of the proposed agreement, ten Zionist captives held alive by the resistance would be released, along with the return of 18 bodies, in exchange for a negotiated number of Palestinian prisoners. 💢 Hamas submits its response to US envoy Steve Witkoff's Gaza ceasefire proposal via Egypt and Qatar, calling for a permanent ceasefire, full Israeli withdrawal, and steady humanitarian aid ▫️They offer to release 10 Israeli captives and 18 bodies in exchange for an agreed… — Anadolu English (@anadoluagency) May 31, 2025 Proposal Details and Israeli Reaction Israeli public broadcaster Kan reported earlier that the Zionist government had received the US proposal on Wednesday evening, citing an unnamed senior Israeli official. According to the report, the proposal includes the release of 10 live Zionist captives and the handover of 10 bodies in two stages in return for a 60-day temporary ceasefire. Previously, Hamas had confirmed it had received the updated Weitkoff proposal through Qatari and Egyptian mediators and was studying it carefully, emphasizing that any agreement must safeguard the interests of the Palestinian people and result in a lasting ceasefire. However, the Israeli Walla News quoted a senior Zionist official who said the latest proposal was 'more favorable to Israel' than previous ones and lacked firm US guarantees for a permanent ceasefire. The official noted that the proposal does not clearly state whether a ceasefire would continue beyond 60 days if negotiations remain unresolved. Early Saturday, Reuters quoted US President Donald Trump as saying he believes both Hamas and the Israeli occupation are looking for 'a way out of the chaos.' The remarks followed Trump's statement late Friday from the White House, in which he revealed that both parties were 'very close' to reaching a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
