Satish Jarkiholi says he is preparing for a new Gokak district
The issue of the division of Belagavi district has come to the fore again with district in-charge Minister Satish Jarkiholi raising it in public fora and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah saying that the government is open to the idea.
Speaking at a ceremony organised by a media organisation in Gokak on Saturday, Mr. Jarkiholi said that they are planning for the creation of a new Gokak district.
Gokak needs a government medical college and a government engineering college. It seems it will be easy once it becomes a district, he said.
'Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has sanctioned a district hospital for Gokak. Work on the building will start soon. It will be up and running by the time a medical college can be set up,' he said.
He also said that Higher Education Minister M.C. Sudhakar has promised to sanction a government engineering college for Gokak. 'We are considering the option of starting it on a temporary premises before the building is constructed,' he said.
Also, he spoke of plans to lay a cable car rope to Gokak falls at a cost of ₹50 crore to promote tourism and construct of a central library in front of the Gokak Court at a cost of ₹4 crore.
Earlier also, Mr. Jarkiholi has argued for the trifurcation of the district as Belagavi, Chikkodi and Gokak, as he feels that it will be convenient for administration and will help people.
A few days ago, Mr. Siddaramaiah told reporters in Gouribidanur that there have been demands for division from Belagavi. 'We will consider it after consulting legislators,' he said.
The demand for a Chikkodi district is three decades old. Leaders like B.R. Sangappagol formed the Chikkodi Zilla Horata Samiti to fight for it. Sanju Badiger and Shivaraj Bolannanavar are leading the fightafter Sangappagol's death a few years ago.
Then Chief Minister late J.H. Patel announced the formation of the new Chikkodi district in 1997 but dropped it after Kannada protagonists opposed it. They argued that creating a smaller district of Belagavi will lead to concentration of pro-Marathi activists in a few taluks who will then continue to demand its merger with Maharashtra.
Mr. Jarkiholi says this argument does not hold good any longer as the political power of the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti has waned.
'At one time, MES had five MLAs from Belagavi. Now there are none. Their hold on the Belagavi City Corporation has also reduced,' he told reporters in Belagavi last week.
However, not everyone agrees. Kannada activists are not fully satisfied with the Minister's answer. They say the agitation for merger with Maharashtra is not limited to MES as other cultural organisations can raise it in future, if Marathi votes are consolidated in the new Belagavi district.
The sub-divisional headquarters of Bailhongal wants to be a district also. People there want a new Bailhongal district or they don't want the division at all. They will be happy in an undivided Belagavi district, they said.
Sri Rajayogindra Swami of Kalmath wants a Kittur district as it has been the seat of the Kittur kingdom headed by Channamma.
Belagavi is among the biggest districts in the State with a population of over 57 lakh. It has 14 taluks, 18 Assembly seats, two MLCs and is spread across three Lok Sabha seats, Belgaum, Uttara Kannada and Chikkodi.
The rural areas are governed by 506 gram panchayats, the highest in the State.
The distinct in-charge Minister feels that each of the three proposed new districts will have six Assembly constituencies. The district is shaped like the English letter S and is spread in four directions across north-west Karnataka. It borders five districts in Karnataka, three in Maharashtra and one in Goa. Life is not easy for residents of villages on its border like Telsang, Kakamari or Kottalagi who have to travel 200 km to reach the district headquarters.
Sanju Badiger argues that the district administration neglects far-flung areas now. 'If we have trifurcation, then we will have three Deputy Commissioners, three Superintendents of Police and three Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officers. They will be able to focus better on a smaller district. A big Belagavi district is difficult to administer,' he said.

Congress Accuses BJP-RSS of Cultural Subversion by Backdoor Imposition of Hindi
Nagpur: The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Wednesday accused the BJP-led government of attempting to erase Marathi identity through the forced imposition of Hindi in primary schools. The party alleged that the "backdoor imposition" of Hindi is part of the BJP-RSS agenda to sideline regional languages and cultures. "The BJP's insistence on making Hindi mandatory from Class I is not about education — it's about dismantling Marathi language and culture. This is a calculated move by the RSS-BJP combine, and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis is its enforcer in Maharashtra," MPCC president Harshwardhan Sapkal told the media in Mumbai. Senior Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar echoed Sapkal's criticism. "The Mahayuti government has finally imposed Hindi on Maharashtra. They've said one thing and done another. The syllabus reveals their true intention — they've betrayed Marathi," he said. Calling the move an attack on the mother tongue, Wadettiwar added that the government has pushed every Marathi speaker into a struggle for linguistic survival. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "The ruling alliance's so-called love for Marathi stands exposed today," he said. The Congress also questioned why such imposition was not attempted in BJP-ruled Gujarat. "Why hasn't Hindi been made compulsory from Class I in Gujarat? Why only Maharashtra? Fadnavis should ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi that," Sapkal said. Referring to the government resolution (GR) issued on June 17, Sapkal alleged that the administration merely reworded the earlier circular while retaining the spirit of compulsion. "This is nothing but semantic deception. Changing a few words doesn't change the intent," he said, warning the BJP not to mistake silence for acceptance. He added, "Marathi is not just a language — it is our identity, our culture. The RSS has long dreamt of a Hindu Rashtra driven by Hindi, but Maharashtra will resist this narrative with the force of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's Hindavi Swarajya." Sapkal also took potshots at the BJP over its shifting alliances and inducting Sudhakar Badgujar. "All that's left is Dawood's entry into the party," he remarked sarcastically. Terror group Sikhs for Justice operative arrested for vandalising B R Ambedkar's statue near Phillaur, writing ‘Pakistan Zindabad' during conflict
1 2 Mohali: The state special operation cell (SSOC), Mohali, has arrested a key operative of banned separatist outfit Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) for vandalism and inciting communal unrest across Punjab, according to Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav in a post on X on Wednesday. Resham Singh, a resident of Hamidi village in Barnala, was apprehended in an intelligence-led operation by SSOC officials. According to sources, he was absconding since early June after allegedly vandalising the statue of B R Ambedkar in Nangal village near Phillaur (Jalandhar), on the instructions of Surinder Singh Thikriwal, a US-based fugitive, and SFJ legal counsel Gurpatwant Singh Pannun (in pic), a designated terrorist. Investigators revealed that Resham Singh was actively involved in spreading pro-Khalistan and pro-SFJ graffiti across several Punjab districts, including Patiala, Faridkot, and Jalandhar. During the Indo-Pak border tensions in May 2025, he painted inflammatory slogans such as "Pakistan Zindabad" and "Khalistan Zindabad" on public walls, allegedly to provoke unrest and stoke separatist sentiments. Officials said there is evidence that the accused received foreign funding to carry out these anti-national activities. He has a history of similar offences and was previously booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in Karnal (Haryana) and Sangrur (Punjab). A fresh FIR was registered at SSOC, Mohali, and further investigations are ongoing to identify other operatives and funding channels linked to the SFJ network.

Putin eyes Israel-Iran crisis to reclaim global spotlight, offers to mediate despite Ukraine war
Vladimir Putin is eyeing the conflict between Israel and Iran as an opportunity to thrust himself to the forefront of the international stage, more than three years into his invasion of Ukraine. The Russian president has pitched himself as a possible mediator-though Moscow's closeness to Iran and Russia's invasion of Ukraine raise doubts about what kind of role he can play, experts say. The assault on Ukraine and the war in Gaza have strained Moscow's traditionally good relations with Israel, home to a large Russian-born community. At the same time, Russia has deepened military ties with Iran. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villa For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas in Dubai | Search ads Learn More Undo But while Moscow was quick to condemn Israel's strikes on Iran last Friday, Putin also wasted little time phoning both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to offer his role as a peacemaker. "By positioning itself as an indispensable intermediary, Moscow aims to reassert diplomatic relevance despite its pariah status in Europe," said Nicole Grajewski, an analyst at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace . It also wants to protect its ally Tehran, facing a potentially transformative military clash. Live Events "Russia does not want to see regime change in Iran, especially if it results in a pro-Western government," she added. Moscow and Tehran in January inked a far-ranging strategic partnership agreement to broaden military ties, and Kyiv and its allies have long accused Iran of supplying Russia with drones and short-range missiles. French President Emmanuel Macron is among those to have pushed back at the idea of a mediation role for Putin. "I do not believe that Russia, which is now engaged in a high-intensity conflict and has decided not to respect the UN Charter for several years now, can be a mediator," he said over the weekend. Many others also see the prospect of Putin's involvement as worrying. "It would legitimise Russia as an indispensable great power at a time when it is waging the biggest war of aggression on European soil since World War II," said Anna Borshchevskaya, an analyst at The Washington Institute. Trump on Wednesday rolled back his earlier openness to Putin playing middleman, telling the Kremlin chief to end his war on Ukraine before getting involved in the Iran-Israel conflict. "He actually offered to help mediate, I said: 'Do me a favour, mediate your own. Let's mediate Russia first, okay?"' Trump told reporters at the White House. "I said ' can worry about this later.'"
