St. Patrick's parade, activities set in St. Charles

Chicago Tribune10-03-2025

The St. Patrick's celebration in St. Charles set for Saturday is more than just the annual parade downtown, organizers said, with a variety of activities planned.
The celebration starts at 11 a.m. Saturday with an opening ceremony at First Street Plaza in downtown St. Charles near Gia Mia and McNally's Irish Pub & Kitchen. It will feature performances from Irish dancers and bagpipers, along with a complimentary face-painter to get people into the spirit of the day, officials said.
Following the opening ceremony, visitors can take part in a St. Patrick's-themed scavenger hunt. To participate, individuals will need to locate shamrocks hidden throughout the downtown. There will be 10 shamrocks hidden within the route of the parade – Sixth Street and Fourth Avenue. Once located, the participant will need to take a photo of themselves with the shamrock, scan the QR code and submit the photo along with the form found on www.stcalliance.org/shamrockhunt. The form will be available online starting March 15.
The more shamrocks that are found, the more entries participants get, organizers said.
On March 18, three winners in the scavenger hunt will be selected to win a 'pot of gold' valued at $400, officials said.
The St. Patrick's Parade will begin at 2 p.m., stepping off at Sixth Street and traveling down Main Street to conclude at Fourth Avenue.
Attendees will also have the chance to capture their time at the St. Patrick's Parade by visiting the photo opportunities around town, officials said.
Many businesses will also be hosting special sales, promotions and events in honor of the day. For more about local deals taking place during the St. Charles St. Patrick's Parade, go to www.stcstpatricksparade.com/salesandspecials.
St. Charles Business Alliance Executive Director Jenna Sawicki said the annual St. Charles tradition of the St. Patrick's Parade is a special one.
'The St. Charles St. Patrick's Parade has been a favorite community tradition for over 20 years,' Sawicki said in a press release about the event. 'It's the perfect opportunity to gather with friends and family, support our amazing businesses in town, and of course, enjoy all the Irish-festivities that the day has to offer.'

Emily Eavis reveals Glastonbury capacity cut to avoid overcrowding

Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis has revealed that the festival sold 'a few thousand' fewer tickets this year in an attempt to reduce overcrowding. Last year, complaints emerged of huge crowds at certain sets to the point that security were forced to shut down entry to more fans. The 2025 event is sold out but apparently will not use its full 210,000 capacity when it takes place at Worthy Farm in Somerset later this month. Speaking to the BBC's Sidetracked podcast, Eavis said she wanted to see if the reduction could 'make an impact on some of the busier times'. 'It'll be interesting to see just how that affects the dynamics on site,' she said of the reduced crowd sizes. Organisers have apparently also created more room at the Other Stage, the festival's second-biggest arena, where Charli XCX will headline on the Saturday night. After the festival bought extra land, there will also be more room at the Shangri-La nightlife area. Eavis said she had held a meeting of around 250 Glastonbury staff and asked whether anyone believed the festival was overcrowded last year – apparently no one put their hand up. 'I was like, [that's] interesting because there's a lot of talk, some people think that it was,' she said. Ticket-holders will also be encouraged to use different routes and make use of the entire site in a bid to ease congestion. Eavis said that the festival's app planner, with which fans can note which artists they want to see, had helped organisers predict which areas were likely to be busiest at specific times. 'The app was really accurate last year. People plan what they're going to see,' she said. 'We can see what they're going to see, which is really useful for us from a crowd perspective.' She revealed that, since the Covid pandemic, people tended to move 'more in a herd' and so her goal was to emphasise that there are 'like 10 routes to anywhere'. This year's festival takes place between Wednesday 25 June to Monday 30 June and will be headlined by The 1975, Neil Young and Olivia Rodrigo. Other artists on the eclectic lineup include Grammy-winning rapper Doechii, rock band Wunderhorse, pop star Charli XCX, singer RAYE, Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap and mysterious band Patchwork.

TikTok creating more than 500 new British jobs as UK users top 30 million

TikTok creating more than 500 new British jobs as UK users top 30 million TikTok has unveiled plans to create more than 500 new British jobs and open a second office in London as it cheered passing the 30 million milestone for users in the UK. The Chinese-owned social media firm said its UK workforce would expand to 3,000 this year as part of its 'deep commitment' to the UK. It will also open a new 135,000sq ft office in London's Barbican, which is set to open early next year. The group already has its UK headquarters in Farringdon, London, which were opened in 2022. TikTok unveiled the plans as it said it now has more than 30 million regular users in the UK each month, which makes the market is biggest user community in Europe. ADVERTISEMENT Adam Presser, director of TikTok UK and global head of operations and trust and safety, said: 'Whether through direct investment in jobs and innovation, or the wider economic contribution from millions of British businesses on TikTok, we're pleased to be increasing our investment and presence here in the UK, an important hub for TikTok.' But it comes after Cabinet minister Pete Kyle signalled he was looking at measures to restrict the amount of time children spend on their phones, including through a possible 10pm curfew. Mr Kyle was asked on Sunday morning whether he would look at limiting the time children spend on social media to two hours per app after the Sunday People and Mirror reported the measure was being considered by ministers. The Online Safety Act has passed into law, and from this year will require tech platforms to follow new Ofcom-issued codes of practice to keep users safe online, particularly children. Hefty fines and site blockages are among the penalties for those caught breaking the rules, but many critics have argued the approach gives tech firms too much scope to regulate themselves. ADVERTISEMENT TikTok's Mr Presser said that, as well as its UK expansion plans, the group also invests 'significantly' in safety. The firm launched its UK operations in 2018 (James Manning/PA) He said: 'What underpins our continued growth is our deep commitment to safety and to creating an enjoyable and secure digital space to sustainably support creators, entrepreneurs and the wider economy, which is why we also invest significantly in safety.' TikTok first launched its UK operations in 2018 and is financially incorporated in Britain. The group was fined 530 million euro (£446 million) by the Irish data protection watchdog last month for breaching EU privacy rules around transferring user data to China. The video-sharing app was also sanctioned for not being transparent with users about where personal data was being sent and ordered the platform to comply with data protection rules within six months. ADVERTISEMENT TikTok said it would appeal against the decision. The social media giant, which is owned by China-based ByteDance, has been under scrutiny from regulators around the world over how it handles personal data, and is also facing a ban in the United States over its China links, which the US government has said is a national security issue.
