Six killed, one injured as family feud turns violent in Pakistan's northwest — official
PESHAWAR: At least six persons were killed and a woman sustained gunshot wounds in a violent altercation between two families in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar, rescue officials said on Monday.
The incident took place near the Khatko Bridge area reportedly over domestic issues, according to District Emergency Officer Ghayoor Mushtaq Khan.
The deceased included three men and three women.
'As a result of the gunfire, one woman was critically injured, while six others died on the spot,' Khan said in a statement.
It added the Rescue 1122 service responded to the emergency, provided first aid to the injured woman and transferred her to Peshawar's Lady Reading Hospital.
Family feuds are common in Pakistan and that often violent and last for long in parts of the country where tribal customs and laws are followed by residents.
In June last year, 10 members of a family, including a two-year-old, were killed in a late-night attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, police said.

Pakistan's Punjab deploys over 43,000 police personnel for security on Eid Al-Adha
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Punjab has deployed over 43,000 police officers and personnel across the province for the Eid Al-Adha holidays, state-run media reported, with police placing the province on high alert amid the prevalent security situation in the country. As per a report in the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) on Friday, the police personnel have been deployed to secure 28,074 mosques and 890 open-air Eid prayer venues. Pakistan has seen a surge in militant violence in recent months. Scores of citizens have been killed in the past in militant attacks that have targeted mosques and tourist destinations on public holidays. 'According to the Punjab Police spokesperson, a comprehensive security strategy has been formulated to ensure the safety of mosques, Imambargahs, Eid congregations, and the general public,' APP said on Friday. The report said 445 Quick Response Force (QRF) teams will be stationed to enhance security readiness while 11,912 metal detectors, 225 walk-through gates and 10,466 CCTV cameras will be utilized during Eid prayers. In Punjab's provincial capital Lahore, over 9,000 personnel will be assigned to secure more than 5,000 Eid gatherings, the spokesperson confirmed. 'Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar has ordered heightened security measures for Eid-ul-Adha, citing the current national security situation,' the report said. Additional police will be deployed at parks and recreational spots during the Eid holidays to ensure public safety. The Punjab Police chief also issued a strict warning against one-wheeling, aerial firing, kite flying and rowdy behavior, the report said, stating such acts will not be tolerated. He stressed all mosques, Imambargahs and Eid grounds must be thoroughly checked and cleared before Eid prayers. High-security mosques and Imambargahs (in category A) will have snipers posted on rooftops while plainclothes commandos will be deployed inside Eid congregations, the report said. 'The IG [inspector-general] also directed the Additional IG Traffic to personally oversee the traffic management plan across Punjab, ensuring smooth flow of traffic during Eid,' APP said. It said police have been ordered to take preventive measures to combat street crimes and highway robberies, while extra personnel will be posted at key locations to maintain traffic flow during the holidays. 'Special instructions have been issued to ensure tourist safety in Murree and other tourist destinations,' it said. 'Authorities are required to enforce SOPs for vehicle entry and exit in Murree, the IG added.'

Pakistan's Sindh, Punjab provinces announce prison sentence remissions ahead of Eid
KARACHI: The provincial governments in Pakistan's Sindh and Punjab provinces have announced remission in sentences for prisoners as a special concession on account of the upcoming Eid Al-Adha festival, official notifications released this week said. Pakistani leaders traditionally announce sentence remissions for prisoners on religious festivals and other special occasions like the two Eid festivals and Independence Day. The remissions are intended as goodwill gestures to promote rehabilitation and allow selected inmates to reunite with their families during important national and religious holidays. 'Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha-1446 (2025), has approved a special remission of 120 days for convicted prisoners confined in various prisons and correctional facilities across Sindh Province,' the CM's office said in a statement. The special remission applies to all convicted prisoners 'except for condemned prisoners and those convicted of serious offenses including murder, espionage, subversion, anti-state and terrorist activities, rape, kidnapping, robbery, dacoity, offenses, and financial embezzlement causing loss to the national exchequer.' In Punjab, a special 90-day sentence remission was announced for 450 inmates. The statement said 270 of the 450 prisoners would be released from Punjab's jails and celebrate Eid with their families. However, prisoners convicted of militancy, sectarianism, espionage, treason, anti-state activities, murder, rape, drug trafficking, robbery, kidnapping, financial embezzlement or causing loss to the national treasury, as well as those punished for violating jail rules within the past year, would not be eligible for the sentence remission. Eid Al-Adha will be celebrated in Pakistan on Saturday, June 7.

Bomb blast in northwestern Pakistan kills one— police
PESHAWAR: A bomb blast in Pakistan's northwestern Bajaur city killed one person, a senior police officer said this week amid Islamabad's efforts to contain surging militancy. Police officer Hunar Khan said a 'strong explosion' took place in front of the residence of Bajaur District Health Officer Dr. Gauhar Ayub on Thursday, killing his father. 'It was a powerful blast and the device was planted close to the house of the gate of DHO Dr. Gauhar Ayub,' Khan told Arab News. 'The father of the DHO died on the spot.' The official said police arrived at the scene shortly after the blast and cordoned off the area to conduct an investigation. Khan said police and security forces were conducting a search operation in the area. 'Initial investigations show it was a planted bomb,' he added. No group has claimed responsibility for the blast but suspicion is likely to fall on the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) or the Pakistani Taliban outfit. It has carried out some of the deadliest attacks against Pakistani civilians and law enforcers since 2007. The Bajaur district near Pakistan's border with Afghanistan was once a stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban before the Pakistani army drove militants out of the tribal districts in successive operations in the late 2000s. Pakistan accuses the Afghan government of not taking action against Pakistani Taliban militants that it says operate from its soil. Kabul denies the allegations and urges Pakistan to resolve its security issues internally. Surging militancy in Pakistan's northwestern and southwestern provinces bordering Afghanistan, since the Afghan Taliban captured Kabul in August 2021, have strained Islamabad's ties with its neighbor.
