‘Monty Python And The Holy Grail' To Get 50th Anniversary 4K Blu-Ray Release

Forbesa day ago

Happily someone high up at Sony Pictures has not only remembered that timeless comedy classic Monty Python And The Holy Grail is 50 years old this year, but they've also decided to celebrate this half-century milestone by granting the film a 4K Blu-ray release. And not just any 4K Blu-ray release, either; this one's going to appear as a limited edition steelbook release accompanied by hours of special features – including a brand new 50 Years of Monty Python And The Holy Grail tribute documentary.
'Monty Python And The Holy Grail' celebrates its 50th anniversary with a new 4K Blu-ray release ... More complete with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos sound.
The film will be presented on 4K disc in its 1.66:1 original aspect ratio using a new 4K master bolstered by the Dolby Vision high dynamic range format, breathing new life into Monty Python's unique take on the King Arthur myth and its cast of classic characters. Hopefully the likes of The Black Knight, the Knights Who Say 'Ni', Tim the Enchanter, Brave Sir Robin and, of course, the legendary White Rabbit will have never looked better.
It's not just the film's picture quality that's getting a new lick of paint for the 4K Blu-ray release, either. The film will also be presented on the 4K disc with a Dolby Atmos sound mix, to make sure you don't miss a word of The Frenchman's taunting or the Bridgekeeper's cunning riddles. Purists will be pleased to hear, though, that the original English Mono track is going to be provided as an option on the disc too, delivering the same audio experience cinemagoers got when the film was first released back in 1975.
The film will be accompanied on the 4K disc by two special features: A slightly shorter 'near-theatrical' version of the film (presented in HD resolution) previously only available on an old VHS release of the film, and the 'Tis But A Tribute – 50 Years Of Monty Python And The Holy Grail' documentary, in which more than 25 comedians share their memories of, affection for and continued fascination with the film.
The bulk of the package's special features, though, will be reserved for the HD Blu-ray that will be included alongside the 4K one. Heading these HD Blu-ray extras up will be not one but two audio commentary tracks, one featuring directors Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones, and one featuring John Cleese, Eric Idle and Michael Palin. There are plenty of other goodies to get your Monty Python teeth into too, though:
* 2015 Tribeca Film Festival Q&A with Terry, Terry, Mike, John and Eric!
* Outtakes and Extended Scenes with Introduction by Terry Jones
* Lost Animations with Introduction by Terry Gilliam
* Quest for the Holy Grail Locations with Michael Palin and Terry Jones
* Lego Knights: The Knights of the Round Table in LEGO
* Special Japanese Version
* How to Use Your Coconuts (An Educational Film)
* BBC Film Night on Location
* Three Songs to Sing-Along
* Photo Gallery
* Original Theatrical Trailer
Sony has announced that this gorgeously presented new 4K release of what's easily my favourite comedy film of all time will be launched on August 26th. Given the 4K release's limited edition status and the film's enduring popularity, though, I'd strongly recommend getting your order in well before that on-sale date arrives.

Lammy seeks to ‘deepen' UK-India ties on New Delhi visit

David Lammy will seek to deepen UK-India economic ties as he visits New Delhi this weekend, saying Britain's recently agreed trade deal with the country is 'just the start of our ambitions'. Trade and migration will be at the top of the agenda for the Foreign Secretary's trip, during which he will meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and external affairs minister S Jaishankar. The Foreign Office said Mr Lammy would also raise 'the recent escalation in tensions following the Pahalgam terrorist attack, and how the welcomed sustained period of peace can be best supported in the interests of stability in the region'. Pakistan and India agreed to a US-brokered ceasefire last month after rising hostilities between the two nuclear-armed rivals followed a deadly attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir. Ahead of the visit, Mr Lammy said: 'Signing a free trade agreement is just the start of our ambitions – we're building a modern partnership with India for a new global era. 'We want to go even further to foster an even closer relationship and co-operate when it comes to delivering growth, fostering innovative technology, tackling the climate crisis and delivering our migration priorities, and providing greater security for our people.' The Foreign Office said talks in New Delhi would aim to 'deepen and diversify the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries'. 'The Foreign Secretary will also welcome progress in our migration partnership, including ongoing work on safeguarding citizens and securing borders in both countries,' it said.

Trump as Channel-Changer in Chief

The newly elected chancellor of Germany had patiently waited on Thursday as President Trump took questions from reporters about a range of topics, including an explosive war of words with Elon Musk that was just erupting online. Finally, the chancellor, Friedrich Merz, saw a chance to get back to his own top priority: Ukraine. 'We are on the side of Ukraine,' Merz said flatly, adding, 'We are trying to get them stronger and stronger just to make Putin stop this war.' And he exalted Trump as 'the key person in the world' to help end the conflict. Merz had Trump — briefly. For a few seconds, Trump murmured in agreement. He described having seen gruesome battlefield footage and acknowledged that the war was 'a terrible, terrible thing.' But then, like a sports fan who had accidentally found himself watching PBS, he changed the channel. 'Did I hear the word autopen?' Trump said, returning to a topic he had already expounded upon: former President Joe Biden's use of an autopen to sign legislation. 'I think it's the biggest scandal maybe in the last 100 years in this country,' he said. The moment crystallized Trump's approach in recent weeks to some of the more challenging issues facing the administration and the world. As wars and conflicts overseas become only more intractable, Trump has frequently sought to pivot to the red-meat domestic topics that he knows will fire up his base. Want all of The Times? ‘The Phoenician Scheme' Reviews: Do Critics Buy Into Wes Anderson's Comedy?

Michael Cera, Benicio Del Toro and Mia Threapleton in "The Phoenician Scheme." Director Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme — starring Benicio Del Toro, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson and Bryan Cranston — is now in theaters. How are critics receiving the film? Rated PG-13, The Phoenician Scheme opened in limited release on May 31 before expanding to a wide release on Friday. Also starring Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, Mathieu Amalric, Richard Ayoade, Jeffrey Wright, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rupert Friend and Hope Davis, The Phoenician Scheme held its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in May. The logline for The Phoenician Scheme reads, "The story of a family and a family business." Featuring a screenplay by Anderson and Roman Coppola, the offbeat comedy follows the story of European businessman Zsa-zsa Korda (Del Toro) and his only daughter and sole heir, a nun named Sister Liesel (Threapleton), who are each being targeted by assassins and schemers. As of Friday, Rotten Tomatoes critics have collectively given The Phoenician Scheme a 78% 'fresh' rating based on 185 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, 'A caper made with all the intricacy of a Rube Goldberg machine, The Phoenician Scheme doesn't deviate from Wes Anderson's increasingly ornate style but delivers the formula with mannered delicacy.' Audiences on RT gave the film a 73% 'fresh' score on the critic aggregation site's Popcornmeter based on 100-plus verified user ratings. Kyle Smith of The Wall Street Journal is among the top critics on RT who gives The Phoenician Scheme a 'fresh' rating on RT, writing, 'Given that The Phoenician Scheme essentially concludes by saying, as some of the director's other movies did, 'Forgive your ridiculous dad for his failings,' its major attraction is the whimsy with which it is decorated, or suffused, or infested.' Also giving The Phoenician Scheme a 'fresh' take on RT is Ann Hornaday of the Washington Post, who writes, "At its fleeting best — in its meditation on the transactional and the transcendent — this one feels like it's reaching for something more than surface charm." In addition, Justin Chang of The New Yorker gives the film a 'fresh' rating on RT, albeit with some minor reservations, writing, 'The result is more digestible, though also less moving, than Anderson's recent Asteroid City, but it does have a stealth emotional weapon in [Mia] Threapleton's Liesl, who exudes the intelligence and self-possession of a young Anna Karina.' Coleman Spilde of Salon is among the top critics on RT who gives The Phoenician Scheme a 'rotten' rating, writing in his summary, 'The resulting product is just that: a product, with all of the matte pastel appeal of Anderson's oeuvre, yet little of its memorable charm.' Dana Stevens of Slate also gives The Phoenician Scheme a 'rotten' rating on RT, writing, 'For all its exquisite boxes-within-boxes compositions and cleverly designed sets, this whole movie unfolded for me as if behind a thick pane of emotion-proof glass.' Nicholas Barber of the BBC wasn't impressed by the film, either, writing in his 'rotten' take on RT, 'Some directors boast that they make the films that they want to see, and they don't care about pleasing anyone else. In the case of The Phoenician Scheme, it feels as if Anderson and his team were enjoying it more than audiences ever will.' The Phoenician Scheme is now playing in theaters in wide release.
