Bengal reports 41 fresh COVID-19 cases, 1 death
Kolkata, Jun 3 (PTI) West Bengal reported 41 fresh COVID-19 cases and the death of a patient who was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kolkata, an official of the state health department said on Tuesday.
A 43-year-old woman, who was a resident of Howrah, had other comorbidities, including nephrological issues and acute coronary syndrome. She died at the isolation ward of the medical establishment late on Monday night, he said.

Covid cases: Health ministry asks states to ensure availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators
New Delhi: All states have been instructed to ensure availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators and essential medicines in view of rising cases of Covid, official sources said on Wednesday. A series of technical review meetings were held on June 2 and 3 under the chairpersonship of Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr Sunita Sharma. The meeting was held with representatives of Disaster Management Cell, Emergency Management Response (EMR) Cell, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and central government hospitals in Delhi and with representatives from all states and Union territories to evaluate the current Covid situation and preparedness measures. According to the sources, state and district surveillance units under IDSP are closely monitoring Influenza Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI). "Testing is recommended for all admitted SARI cases and 5 per cent of ILI cases as per guidelines and positive SARI samples are sent for Whole Genome Sequencing through the ICMR VRDL network," an official source said. As of June 4, India reported 4,302 active cases, with an increase of 864 cases in the past 24 hours. The official sources said most cases are mild and managed under home care. Since January 1, 44 deaths have been reported, primarily among individuals with pre-existing illnesses, they said. "States have been instructed to ensure availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines," the source said. A mock drill assessing oxygen supply systems (PSA plants, LMO tanks, MGPS lines) was conducted on June 2. Facility-level preparedness mock drills are planned for Wednesday and Thursday. The official sources advised people to practise hand hygiene, cough etiquette, and avoid crowded places when unwell and that individuals with acute respiratory illness should self-monitor and seek medical care if symptoms worsen. Trusted sources such as health ministry's website and PIB releases should be followed to avoid misinformation and rumours, they said. Mayo sends 2 Covid samples to Neeri for genome sequencing
1 2 Nagpur: Days after two patients with comorbidities died at a private and a govt hospital recently, Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) forwarded samples of two Covid patients for genome sequencing to Neeri lab on Wednesday. IGGMCH officials said these samples belong to their employees who tested positive and have recovered. No new Covid case was reported on Tuesday and the city now has only two active Covid patients who are under home isolation. The NMC too is likely to send samples of the two recent Covid victims for genome sequencing. NMC medical officer (health) Dr Deepak Selokar told TOI that all health workers have been kept on alert and testing would be scaled up if needed. "Samples of influenza-like illness (ILI) patients are collected and sent to medical colleges for testing. But currently there is no surge of ILI patients. We had just 10 Covid cases in May and two active patients at present," he said. Dr Selokar added that the deceased patients had underlying health conditions, yet it was decided to consider such mortalities as Covid deaths if the tests are positive. She started showing symptoms of respiratory infection, and hence her sample was taken, which tested positive. Accordingly, we updated the deaths on the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) portal," he said. The participants concurred that most cases are mild and managed under home care. Forty-four Covid deaths have been reported since January this year primarily among individuals with pre-existing illnesses. State and district surveillance units under IDSP are closely monitoring ILI and severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) patients. Testing is recommended for all hospitalised SARI cases and 5% of ILI cases as per guidelines. Positive SARI samples are sent for whole genome sequencing through the ICMR-VRDL network.

Ludhiana: 2 fresh Covid cases reported in city; tally rises to 12
Two fresh Covid-19 cases were reported in the city Ludhiana on Wednesday, raising the active case tally in the city to 12. Health officials said that the new patients, a 35-year-old and a 37-year-old, are both vaccinated. One of them is asymptomatic, while the other is mildly symptomatic. According to health authorities, the fully vaccinated individual and the other who received one dose are both in stable condition. This follows the report on Tuesday of a husband and wife from the Civil Lines area who tested positive. Both are currently in home isolation, with one showing symptoms of the virus. Out of the 12 active cases in the city, 11 are vaccinated. One case, a 69-year-old woman, is being treated at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Chandigarh, health officials said. According to district epidemiologist Dr Sheetal Narang, the woman had been battling typhoid for the past five months and was regularly visiting PGIMER, Chandigarh, where she might have contracted the virus. Her vaccination status is unverified. Last Wednesday, a migrant from Uttar Pradesh in Ludhiana, with pre-existing lung conditions, succumbed to Covid at GMCH-32, Chandigarh.
