Today's rugby news as Sherratt officially starts job and Ireland suffer major blow ahead of Wales clash

Yahoo16-02-2025

Here are your rugby morning headlines for Sunday, February 16.
Wales interim head coach Matt Sherratt will report for duty today as he meets with staff after replacing Warren Gatland last week.
Gatland walked away from the Wales job on Tuesday after losing 14 Test matches in a row, with Cardiff head coach Sherratt announced as his successor for the remainder of the Six Nations.

With no Six Nations rugby this weekend, Sherratt remained focused on his duties with Cardiff, but now, as attention turns to the third round of the tournament, Sherratt will switch his focus from club to country.
The players are set return to camp on Monday, with the six Welsh-based players - as well as those plying their trade in England and France - all back to prepare for the clash with Ireland.
However, Sherratt will meet up with the staff today to plot the week building up to next Saturday's meeting with Simon Easterby's side, having travelled back from Galway following Cardiff's defeat to Connacht.
"It's been a bit busier than usual," said Sherratt in Galway about the last week. "I didn't realise how popular I was.
"Not popular for Valentine's, but popular for tickets. it's been a very different week. I've enjoyed it so far.
"Obviously fully focused on tonight and then into Welsh camp tomorrow to see how we can go there."

Ireland captain Caelan Doris is set to miss next weekend's clash with Wales in Cardiff.
Reports in Ireland suggest the Leinster No. 8 has already been ruled out internally, with the focus now on making sure he is fit for the clash with France in round four.
Despite Ireland's head of athletic performance Aled Walters saying the reason he sat out training last week was just a precaution, the Sunday Independent report that the knee injury he picked up against Scotland will keep him out of next Saturday's trip to Cardiff.
Should Doris miss out, it will remarkably be the first time in 43 matches that Ireland have not been able to call on him. He has started 41 of the last 42 matches, coming off the bench in a World Cup warm-up game against Samoa, playing across the back-row.
The last time he wasn't part of Ireland's matchday 23 was in 2021. Jack Conan is likely to start at No. 8 in his place, with Peter O'Mahony the probable choice to replace him as captain.
Prop Tadhg Furlong is also unlikely to feature against Wales as he returns from a hamstring injury, but Mack Hansen and Joe McCarthy are expected to be available.
Cardiff wing Harri Millard suffered an immediate blow on his return from injury, after being forced off minutes into Cardiff's clash with Connacht on Saturday night.
Cardiff coach Sherratt had spoken about the importance of welcoming back Millard, who has been out since December with a knee injury, ahead of kick-off.
"Harri Millard in particular has worked really hard to come back, as well as Liam Belcher and Ben Donnell," said Sherratt pre-match.
"Three really important players for us. Three players who maybe don't get a lot of airtime, but they glue our squad together and make a difference."
However, just three minutes into his return, Millard was forced off for a HIA in Galway - with the versatile back not returning.
Cardiff also lost his replacement, Jacob Beetham, in the second-half - with the one-cap Wales international limping off during the 24-19 defeat.

Ulster were punished for woeful indiscipline during the second half as they suffered a 34-19 United Rugby Championship defeat against Benetton at Stadio di Monigo.
The visitors had three players – David McCann, Nick Timoney and Stewart Moore – yellow-carded in a damaging 20-minute spell, while they also saw a try disallowed following foul play by prop Tom O'Toole.
Benetton fought back from a 19-10 deficit to score 24 unanswered points, and Ulster could have few complaints about the outcome.
Scrum-half Nathan Doak gave them a flying start through a third-minute try that he also converted, and Mike Lowry then claimed an interception score – again converted by Doak – after former Bath back Matt Gallagher touched down for Benetton.
Tomas Albornoz converted and kicked a penalty, before Jacob Stockdale pounced for Ulster's third try, but Benetton responded just before the interval when Ignacio Mendy crossed and Albornoz again converted.
Ulster then lost their way through a flurry of sin-binnings either side of an Albornoz penalty, and Benetton secured victory through replacement prop Mirco Spagnolo's 65th-minute touchdown before Alessandro Izekor added a bonus-point try and Albornoz slotted two more conversions.

Recently cut ex-Bengals linebacker would make sense for Broncos

The Cincinnati Bengals are releasing veteran linebacker Germaine Pratt, a move that could be of note to the Denver Broncos. Even after signing Dre Greenlaw in March, the Broncos could still use another starting-caliber inside linebacker. Alex Singleton is coming off a torn ACL, and he's set to turn 32 this season. Singleton was a starter in Denver before his injury, but it remains to be seen if he will return to his pre-injury form, and the Broncos would save $5.58 million if they release him. Advertisement There's not much proven depth behind Greenlaw and Singleton, either. Justin Strnad started eight games out of necessity last year, but Denver's not leaning on him to start in 2025. Drew Sanders could have a bigger role this season, but he only has four career starts on his resume. Levelle Bailey played primarily on special teams, and undrafted free agent signees JB Brown, Karene Reid and Jordan Turner are fighting for roster spots this summer. So the Broncos could certainly use a proven veteran like Pratt, a 29-year-old linebacker who started all 17 games for the Bengals last season. A former third-round pick out of NC State, Pratt has totaled 616 tackles, 23 pass breakups, seven interceptions, seven forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and 3.5 sacks in 96 career games. If the price is right, Pratt would be a logical addition for Denver's defense that could still use an upgrade at linebacker. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans. Okeeheelee Park's $400,000 pump track for cyclists, skateboarders and scooters now open

Palm Beach County's first bicycle pump track is open for business. The pump track, a circuit of rollers and banked turns designed for bicycles, foot scooters and skateboards, is already seeing heavy use. Users generate momentum by 'pumping' or by up-and-down body movements. There is no need to pedal. The track opened on May 31 at Okeeheelee Park, on Forest Hill Boulevard near Greenacres, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and exhibition rides from both professional and amateur riders. The 10,000-square-foot facility offers a continuous-loop riding experience for people of all ages and skill levels. It can accommodate wheelchairs. Motorized vehicles are not permitted. The two-year-in-the-making track was made possible by a $400,000 donation from Margaret Blume and Palm Beach Pump Track, the nonprofit that oversaw its construction. The county Parks Department now operates it. Velosolutions, the Swiss-based company that built the track, defines a pump track as a 'High Performance Playground for Everything with Wheels.' The asphalt-surface pump track, open from sunrise to sunset, lies behind the dog park at Okeeheelee Park. Four things to know for those who plan to visit: Helmets are required, and safety equipment is highly recommended. The track is not wide enough for more than one participant at a time. Pets and personal belongings are prohibited on the track surface. Users should ride within their own ability. The track is unsupervised. Signage warns riders to ride at their own risk. The county expects the facility to be a major draw as the closest pump track is in Haulover Beach in Miami-Dade County. 'We are thrilled with the amount of usage thus far,' said Jennifer Kraatz, president of Palm Beach Pump Track. 'The word has gotten out.' More: Okeeheelee Park may be getting another amenity: a playground for everything with wheels Kraatz said the pump track has been designed to host qualifying tournament events that could be held in conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sports Commission. That is not expected to occur until next year, but Kraatz said that she expects communitywide tournaments to be held before then. Her nonprofit already operates the BMX track at Okeeheelee Park. Unlike the pump track, that course features a track that requires pedaling and has separated start-and-finish lines. Bicyclists mostly use it. More Photo by ADRIAN DENNIS/AFP via Getty Images Wales currently leads the group with seven points, having won two matches and drawn one from its first three games. Belgium, meanwhile, has only played once so far, a draw, after missing the first qualifying window due to its participation in the UEFA Nations League. That leaves Belgium in fourth place with one point, but with games in hand and plenty of time to climb the table. A win on Monday, for example, would put them just one point behind second-place North Macedonia.
