Yudh Nashian Virudh: Ludhiana District achieves highest drug arrests in state; 383 peddlers and 75 suppliers apprehended
Police have arrested a total of 383 drug peddlers and 75 major suppliers, marking the highest number of drug-related arrests by any district in Punjab. This breakthrough is part of the ongoing 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' campaign aimed at dismantling the illegal drug trade in the region.
Swapan Sharma, commissioner of police, Ludhiana, lauded the relentless efforts of field officers, special units and support staff involved in the operations. 'This achievement is not just a statistical milestone but a testament to the commitment of every officer involved. We will continue our war against drugs with increased force and strategic planning,' he stated.
Beyond strict enforcement, the Ludhiana police commissionerate is also focusing on voluntary de-addiction efforts by facilitating admission of drug users into outpatient opioid assisted treatment (OOAT) centres. To further disrupt drug supply chains, cordon and search operations (CASO) are regularly conducted in suspected drug hotspots.
As part of community engagement, Ludhiana Police are organising police-public sampark meetings to foster stronger cooperation and trust between them. These meetings have proven crucial in gathering intelligence, raising public awareness and encouraging active participation in the anti-drug movement.
Commissioner Sharma appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious drug activity by using the designated helpline numbers. 'Together, we can make Ludhiana a drug-free city,' he said.

AAP councillor's son gets extortion call: ‘Give Rs 1 cr or will kill you, your family'
The son of an AAP councillor in Ludhiana allegedly received an extortion call and the unidentified killer threatened to kill him and his family if he fails to pay Rs 1 crore ransom. The Ludhiana Police registered an FIR on the complaint of Gurpreet Bedi, son of AAP councillor Veeran Bedi from ward number 57. Gurpreet told police that on June 5, he received a WhatsApp call from an international number. The caller threatened to kill him and his family if he failed to pay Rs 1 crore as ransom, he said. 'I was shocked as the caller, who spoke fluent Punjabi, knew my every detail. He said he knows everything about me that what time I go for work and when I return home. Initially, I suspected some of my own employees but later we got to know that it wasn't them. It's an international number and the caller was seemingly under the influence of some drugs,' Gurpreet said. An FIR under the sections 308 (2) (extortion) and 351 (3) (criminal intimidation) of BNS has been registered with the Sarabha Nagar police. The number from which the call came has been sent to Cyber cell for identification.

Delhi court convicts man in child sexual exploitation abuse material case
New Delhi: A Delhi court convicted a man in a child sexual exploitation abuse material case. The matter is now posted for arguments on the quantum of sentence on the next date of hearing in the court of additional chief judicial magistrate Jyoti Maheshwari. The judge noted that the prosecution had established a clear and traceable chain of evidence. This evidence showed the allocation of the public IP address by ANI Network, the assignment of the corresponding private IP address by M/s Classic Cable TV to the accused's family, and the use of this connection by the accused on the device being exclusively used by him. This technical and documentary evidence cumulatively forms a sound basis to associate the digital activity in question with the accused, the court said. CBI registered the case on Oct 27, 2016, based on a written complaint indicating that the accused accessed and downloaded child sexual exploitation abuse material. An investigation revealed that he was in possession of such video files stored on his laptop. A total of 183 files containing such material were found in the in-built hard disk of the seized laptop. On Jan 17, 2018, the court took cognizance of the offence as disclosed in the chargesheet, and accordingly, Sharma was summoned. He was given bail by the court. Taking the evidence on record, the court found him guilty under Section 67B of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and convicted him on June 11. The said section aims to penalise not just the transmission or sharing of the material but also the online viewing or downloading of such material. The court, observing that the prosecution succeeded in proving its case beyond reasonable doubt by leading reliable, cogent and convincing evidence, concluded, "…it is evident that the prosecution has successfully proved the commission of the alleged offence by the accused, beyond reasonable doubt. Accordingly, the accused Anurag Sharma is convicted of the offence under Section 67B (b) of the Information Technology Act, 2000. FIR against doctor who posed as cardiologist, 5 others
Faridabad: Nearly a month after the complaint was filed, police on Tuesday registered an FIR against the city doctor who was allegedly masquerading as a cardiologist and performed around 50 heart procedures, including critical surgeries, for seven months before the fraud was called out. The FIR also names five officials of the heart care centre at BK Civil Hospital, where the doctor -- Pankaj Mohan Sharma – was working as a cardiologist. It includes Dr N Pratap Kumar, CMD of Mediterina Hospital, which runs the heart care centre at the civil hospital in a public-private partnership mode. Others are Dalip Nayyar, head of corporate HR at the facility; Ajay Sharma, head of the Haryana centre; Piyush Srivastava, financial manager; and Mandip, centre head. "Investigation is ongoing," the spokesperson said. Asked about the delay, police said they were waiting for a detailed report and documents linked to Dr Sharma from the civil surgeon's office before proceeding with the FIR. According to the FIR, hospital officials were aware that Sharma, though a qualified doctor, was not authorised to perform surgeries, but they permitted him to do so anyway. The case came to police on April 11, when lawyer and activist Sanjay Gupta filed a complaint that Dr Pankaj Sharma had forged documents to show that he had a DNB (Diplomate of National Board) in cardiology, a degree equivalent to that of an MD. "The hospital management continued to employ an unqualified and fraudulent doctor who lacks any degree or recognised specialisation in cardiology. Dr Sharma falsely claimed qualifications of MD and DNB (cardiology)," Gupta said in the complaint. He also alleged in the complaint that Dr Sharma had killed three patients. After preliminary investigation, police also found that Dr Sharma was fraudulently using the identity and registration number of a legitimate practising cardiologist in the city – Dr Pankaj Mohan. It turned out that Dr Mohan got whiff of the fraud months before the police complaint. In Jan this year, he had approached the Indian Medical Association and accused Dr Sharma of illegally using his credentials. Dr Mohan also issued a legal notice to Dr Sharma. The MBBS doctor, who was hired by Mediterina Hospital in July 2024, stopped reporting to the heart care centre from Feb after he was asked to produce his medical degree. "Many patients began enquiring about him and eventually visited the real Dr Pankaj Mohan. When Dr Mohan clarified that he had never worked at the heart centre, the allegations became obvious," a doctor at BK Civil Hospital told TOI.
