Manchester City working on ‘Plan B' option after withdrawing Florian Wirtz transfer interest

Yahoo21-05-2025

Hugo Viana and Manchester City officials are now working on their 'Plan B' option in the transfer market after withdrawing interest in Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz.
The Etihad Stadium faithful bid farewell to Kevin De Bruyne on Tuesday night in an emotional affair that saw the iconic 33-year-old presented with a lifetime season ticket at the club, a mosaic at the training ground, and confirmed plans for a statue outside of the arena.

The 3-1 win over Bournemouth was not only De Bruyne's final home match for Manchester City, but also a mammoth victory in the context of the club's chase for UEFA Champions League football – a competition that could prove vital in attracting a certain calibre of player.
And that is of the utmost importance as City bosses go in search of their best-possible replacement for the Belgium international, despite retracting from the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz this summer.
Manchester City were long tied to links with the Germany international playmaker, alongside Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Real Madrid, but growing finances around a move ultimately proved too costly for Etihad decision makers.

As such, the likes of Hugo Viana and Txiki Begiristain are moving their attentions elsewhere in the transfer market and are looking at alternatives to take control of the creative weight from next season in Pep Guardiola's squad.
According to the information of Sky Sport's Sacha Tavolieri, Manchester City have maintained 'regular contacts' with the entourage of Barcelona midfielder Dani Olmo, knowing that the financial difficulties of the La Liga champions would make finding a transfer agreement easier.
It is claimed that officials at the Etihad Stadium have already 'prepared the groundwork' for Pep Guardiola to have a new central creator in his squad 'capable of creating play, connecting different zones, generating chances, and converting actions into goals'.
Should a transfer be completed for Olmo between Barcelona and City, the report reveals a €60 million fee could be on the cards.

Follow-up reporting from Tavolieri on his social media channels has further revealed that Florian Wirtz has chosen Bayern Munich as his next club, in a wish that has been confirmed to City officials.
As for the work being conducted by incoming director of football Hugo Viana and his recruitment team, it is emphasised that they are now working on Dani Olmo as their 'Plan B', a player that has 'always been very appreciated' by manager Pep Guardiola.
It also remains to be seen whether there are any names within the existing Manchester City squad that Pep Guardiola and his coaching staff feel can carry some of the creative responsibilities left behind by Kevin De Bruyne from this summer.
Much has been made this season of Phil Foden's disappointing campaign, and so many will be hoping to see a much stronger return from the England international next season, particularly following his Premier League Player of the Season heroics across 2023/24.
A number of alterations are expected to be made to the City squad over the course of the summer, with uncertainties still looming over the likes of James McAtee and Claudio Echeverri, with permanent and loan deals anticipated for both respectively.

Liverpool agree €136.3m deal for Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz

Liverpool have agreed a club record €136.3 million transfer fee for Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz, according to The Athletic's David Ornstein. The two clubs had reportedly agreed on a deal worth up to €150m, which would have made him the most expensive signing in British football history. Advertisement However, the Reds will pay a €117.5m fee with a further €18.8m in add-ons for the 22-year-old. The attacking midfielder had already agreed personal terms with Liverpool last month, and he is now expected to sign a five-year contract at Anfield. Wirtz is one of the most gifted talents in European football. He bagged 18 goals and 20 assists in 49 appearances in 2023/24. He maintained his excellent standards this season, making 31 goal contributions in 45 matches. Bayern Munich and Manchester City were keen to sign the German international, but Liverpool have won the race to secure his services. Wirtz will become the Reds' second signing this summer after Jeremie Frimpong's arrival at the Merseyside club. Further new signings are expected at Liverpool as manager Arne Slot strives to shape the squad to his own taste. Stats from

Trent Alexander-Arnold makes FSG claim and explains Liverpool exit decision - 'I am not going to say'

Trent Alexander-Arnold paid tribute to Fenway Sports Group at his Real Madrid unveiling, thanking the Liverpool owners for their support after he made clear his intention to leave Anfield. The 26-year-old moved to the Spanish capital earlier this month after the La Liga giants paid £10m to release him from his Reds contract a month early so he could feature for los Blancos at the Club World Cup, which begins on Sunday in the United States. Advertisement The nature of Alexander-Arnold's move was a controversial one that divided opinion among the club's worldwide fanbase and he was loudly booed when he emerged as a second-half substitute in last month's 2-2 draw with Arsenal. Advertisement 'I don't think wanting to win the Ballon d'Or influenced my decision to come here at all to be honest,' Alexander-Arnold said. 'You're joining a team like this, with the team-mates that I've got, it's going to be hard to win it with these superstars, but it's exciting. 'These are the kind of players I want to play with, I've admired these, played against them, I know how good they are, so to be a part of this team, playing with them rather than against them will be good. 'Such a contrast of emotions, of course, different ends of the scale. Being at Liverpool for so long and experiencing everything what I did and what I had was incredible and knowing it was coming to an end and it was always going to be emotional for me. 'But I went out in a way I was happy about, the send-off I got, the way the club treated me, the way the fans were as well was outstanding, I couldn't say a bad word. Advertisement 'Speaking to the players, the manager, the owners, they were all incredible as well and showed amazing support and were a huge help. We had an amazing conversation in the last couple of days with the owners, they were very warm and welcoming and thanked me for everything I gave in service to the club. 'They wished me well on my future journey and what I wanted to do and said I am always welcome back at the club at any point. So to have those words spoken was amazing. Sent off in the perfect way. "Now to be here facing a new challenge, a new journey is very exciting. I am over the moon here and something not a lot of players experience. So I am very lucky.' Alexander-Arnold continued: 'I mean, to be honest, it was never a question of where - it was always whether to go or not. Advertisement 'I always knew, for me, I have probably known for a long time is that if I was to ever leave Liverpool, it would only be for Real Madrid. They are the only club for me and then it gets to a point where you have to make a decision to go or stay. 'It wasn't easy, I am not going to say it was, I had been there so long and a part of it but eventually you have to make a decision and I have made the right one in my mind and I am excited about.'

Liverpool not done yet after Florian Wirtz transfer as £200m barrier set to be smashed

Liverpool have agreed a club-record deal with Bayer Leverkusen to sign Florian Wirtz. But that is not the only transfer record the Premier League champions look set to break this summer. The Reds have struck an overall £116m package with the Bundesliga outfit, and will pay an initial fee of £100m. That itself is enough to see the German usurp Virgil van Dijk and Darwin Nunez as Liverpool's record signing. Advertisement If all £16m of the subsequent add-ons are activated during the 22-year-old's time at Anfield, Wirtz will also end up costing a British record transfer fee - breaking the £115m Chelsea committed to spend on Moises Caicedo in the summer of 2023. READ MORE: Inside blockbuster Florian Wirtz £116m transfer as Leverkusen star blown away by Liverpool pitch READ MORE: Florian Wirtz transfer agreed with Liverpool to smash record for Bayer Leverkusen man The arrival of Wirtz takes Liverpool's spending so far this summer up to a potential £176m - including add-ons. The Reds have already brought in Jeremie Frimpong and Armin Pecsi in £29.5m and £1.5m deals from Bayer Leverkusen and Puskas Akademia respectively. Advertisement Meanwhile, Giorgi Mamardashvili will officially become a Liverpool player this summer after a deal was agreed with Valencia last August. The Reds will pay an initial £25m fee for the Georgia international, rising to a potential £29m with add-ons. Consequently, if we include all of the aforementioned add-ons, this summer is already the costliest window in Liverpool's history. The Reds' biggest previous outlay came in the summer of 2018 when they brought in Fabinho (£43.7m), Naby Keita (£52.75m), Alisson Becker (£65m) and Xherdan Shaqiri (£13.5m) in what would prove to be an £174.95m spending spree. Discounting add-ons, Liverpool paid an initial £161.55m that summer courtesy of £39.3m and £56m upfront fees for Fabinho and for Alisson. Advertisement Fast forward seven years and the Reds' upfront spending on Wirtz, Frimpong, Mamardashvili and Pecsi falls short of such a figure at roughly £156m. But this is just the beginning as Liverpool look to improve Arne Slot's title-winning squad, with their spending expected to exceed £200m for the first time in the club's history as they navigate a record-breaking summer. After completing a deal for Wirtz, the Reds will look to finalise the signing of Milos Kerkez from AFC Bournemouth. Liverpool remain confident of striking a deal for the Hungary international and are in direct contact with the Cherries, but are yet to make a formal offer. Advertisement Bournemouth rate Kerkez at £45m, with any deal agreed for the 21-year-old ensuring the Reds break the £200m barrier and definitively break their overall spending record for a single window. Yet Liverpool are not expected to conclude their business with the would-be purchase of Kerkez. They are expected to also move for a new centre-forward, with Hugo Ekitike one player who is reportedly of interest as Eintracht Frankfurt hold out for £85m. A new centre-back could also be on the agenda, with the rest of the Reds' incoming summer business set to be dictated by outgoings as the club also looks to trim Slot's squad. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Caoimhin Kelleher have already departed in £10m and £18m moves to Real Madrid and Brentford respectively, while Darwin Nunez is also expected to be sold. Advertisement Luis Diaz has been the subject of a rejected approach by Barcelona and admitted he has held talks with clubs as uncertainty around his future continues. With Federico Chiesa also admitting he is open to a return to Italy , Cody Gakpo attracting interest from Bayern Munich and Diogo Jota's future the subject of speculation, Liverpool could find themselves reshuffling their attacking options beyond just a new centre-forward later in the summer. At centre-back, Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah are both attracting interest, while Ibrahima Konate's contract is uncertain as the France international enters the final year of his contract. Should any of the trio depart - though the latter has hinted he will stay put next season - the Reds will need to sign a replacement. With the Reds moving to sign Kerkez, Kostas Tsimikas is expected to move on though Andy Robertson has admitted his own future is also uncertain as he enters the final year of his contract. Advertisement And in midfield, while Wataru Endo has insisted he intends to stay put at Anfield despite a season on the fringes , it would be no surprise if Harvey Elliott moved on after finding himself in a similar position. The midfielder, who is currently away with England Under-21s, has suggested a number of times he is considering his options, recently admitting he doesn't want to 'waste years of his career' , with the signing of Wirtz knocking him further down the pecking order. Elsewhere, Vitezslav Jaros is expected to leave on loan, while the likes of Ben Doak, Tyler Morton and Nat Phillips are all attracting interest. Liverpool have already been reactionary in the transfer market with the signing of Frimpong coming in response to Alexander-Arnold's departure. Advertisement Meanwhile, the arrivals of Mamardashvili and Pecsi freed up Kelleher to depart and Jaros to be available for a loan exit. And the would-be arrivals of Wirtz and Kerkez will likely have a knock-on effect that will affect the likes of Elliott and Tsimikas. It will be a similar story upfront if Nunez indeed moves on and the Reds pursue a new striker or if there is a centre-back departure. If - or when - Liverpool do find themselves in the market for a new striker or centre-back later this summer, such a player is unlikely to come cheap. Considering Liverpool's previous largest spending spree back in 2018 ended with the club winning the Champions League at the end of that season, the Reds will perhaps quietly be hoping for a similar outcome this time around. Advertisement At the very least, with that window helping turn Liverpool into genuine Premier League and Champions League contenders and set them up to enjoy their peak years under Jurgen Klopp, the Reds will be wanting history to now repeat itself. With Wirtz the latest marquee arrival and biggest sign of intent, Liverpool are splashing the cash with their biggest ever spending spree as they look to build on Slot's historic Premier League success.
