Taiwan to roll out new air-raid guidance, drawing lessons from Ukraine and Israel

Malay Mail5 hours ago

TAIPEI, June 25 — Taiwan will issue new air-raid guidance for its citizens next week, according to security officials and internal planning documents reviewed by Reuters, learning lessons from Ukraine and Israel in case it needs to counter a Chinese military attack.
'Taiwan is looking very closely into the cases from Ukraine and Israel,' a senior Taiwan security official briefed on the matter told Reuters.
'Our people must know how to protect themselves, either at home or in office,' said the official, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.
Authorities will update instructions on what people should do when air-raid alerts are issued, including for citizens who are not able to get into shelters in time or for those who are driving a car, according to the government planning documents.
That includes instructions on hiding behind 'at least two layers of walls' and 'staying in the down position while opening your mouth slightly' in the scenario when people could not immediately get to an air-raid shelter.
'In metropolitan Taiwan, the reality is that many residents of high-rise buildings may not be able to get to the designated air-raid shelters quickly within three minutes,' a second security official said, adding the government is working to get citizens to learn 'alternative' ways to protect themselves.
Civil defence drills including rehearsals on setting up emergency supply stations will be held across the island alongside Taiwan's main annual 'Han Kuang' military exercises in July, which will last for an unprecedented 10 days, the two officials said.
Taiwan has been preparing air-raid shelters across the island, including in subway stations and shopping malls, after Russia's invasion of Ukraine raised new fears about a Chinese invasion.
The capital of Taipei alone has more than 4,600 such shelters that can accommodate some 12 million people, more than four times its population.
China views separately governed Taiwan as its own territory and has ramped up its military pressure over the past five years, including staging half a dozen rounds of war games. Taiwan's government rejects Beijing's sovereignty claims. — Reuters

US holding peace talks with Iran, says special envoy

Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff attends a meeting in the Situation Room of the White House, in Washington, D.C., U.S., June 21, 2025. The White House/Daniel Torok/Handout via REUTERS THIS IMAGE HAS BEEN SUPPLIED BY A THIRD PARTY. NEW YORK (Bernama-dpa): The US has begun talks with Iran on a permanent peace agreement, according to special envoy Steve Witkoff, German Press Agency (dpa) reported. Speaking on Fox News late Tuesday (June 24), Witkoff said that the talks are "promising." "We're already talking to each other, not just directly, but also through interlocutors," he said. The possible agreement would envisage Iran having a civilian nuclear programme but without the enrichment of uranium on Iranian territory, he said. Witkoff dismissed as "completely preposterous" media reports that the US attacks on Iran over the weekend had only set back the nuclear programme by a few months. The centrifuges at Natanz and Fordow were "damaged or destroyed in a way that it'll be almost impossible for them to resurrect that programme for - in my view and in many other experts' views who have seen the raw data - it will take a period of years," he said. On Tuesday, several US media outlets reported, citing an intelligence assessment, that only the entrances to the facility in Fordow, which was built deep into the mountain, had been destroyed, but not the underground buildings themselves. Destroying Iran's nuclear capability was the key stated war aim of Israel's government when it launched attacks on June 13. The US then joined the assault on the nuclear facilities with massive "bunker-busting" bombs. - Bernama-dpa

South Korea court rejects arrest warrant for ex-President Yoon, Yonhap says

FILE PHOTO: South Korea's ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is facing charges of orchestrating a rebellion when he declared martial law, arrives to attend his trial at the Seoul Central District Court in Seoul, South Korea, Monday, May 12, 2025. Ahn Young-joon/Pool via REUTERS/File Photo SEOUL (Reuters) -A South Korean court has rejected a request to issue an arrest warrant for former President Yoon Suk Yeol related to a probe into his short-lived attempt to impose martial law, the Yonhap News Agency said on Wednesday, citing a special prosecutor. A spokesperson for the Seoul Central District Court and the prosecution office could not immediately be reached for comment. South Korea's special prosecutor had asked the court on Tuesday to issue an arrest warrant for Yoon as an investigation intensified over the ousted leader's botched bid to declare martial law in December. Yoon, who is already facing a criminal trial on insurrection charges for issuing the martial law declaration, was arrested in January after resisting authorities trying to take him into custody, but was released after 52 days on technical grounds. The new warrant was on a charge of obstruction, a senior member of the special prosecutor's team of investigators said on Tuesday. (Reporting by Heekyong Yang and Joyce Lee;Editing by Ed Davies)

Chow-Ramasamy defamation mediation resumes July 2

P Ramasamy initiated defamation proceedings against Chow Kon Yeow on July 18 last year over a Facebook post which he claims seriously harmed his reputation. GEORGE TOWN : The Penang Court Mediation Centre has fixed July 2 for a further mediation session between chief minister Chow Kon Yeow and former deputy chief minister P Ramasamy in connection with defamation proceedings linked to the disputed Batu Kawan land deal. Ramasamy's lawyer, Shamsher Singh Thind, confirmed that an e-review is scheduled for tomorrow before sessions court judge Helmi Ghani to provide an update on the proceedings. 'The new date was fixed as both parties need to confirm something. 'Today is the second mediation session after the first one on April 14,' he said. Chow also confirmed that mediation is ongoing, with the next session scheduled for July 2. 'Today's mediation involved defamation suits stemming from the cancelled land deal between Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and Umech Land Sdn Bhd. 'Ramasamy filed the first defamation suit against me, while PDC filed the second suit against him,' he said. Today's session was presided over by mediator S Selvaranjini, with V Sithambaram representing both Chow and PDC. The mediation concerns remarks made by Chow about the now-scrapped land transaction between PDC and Umech Land. Ramasamy initiated defamation proceedings against Chow on July 18 last year over a statement published on the latter's official Facebook page on Oct 3, 2023, which Ramasamy alleged gravely damaged his reputation.
