Japan's Eneos to ramp up investment in LNG, SAF while slowing hydrogen
TOKYO, May 12 (Reuters) - Japan's top oil refiner, Eneos Holdings, plans to increase investment in low-carbon energy such as liquefied natural gas and sustainable aviation fuel, while slowing efforts in cleaner alternatives like hydrogen, its CEO said on Monday.
Under a new three-year business plan through March 2028, Eneos (5020.T), opens new tab will invest 1.56 trillion yen ($10.7 billion), including 740 billion yen in strategic spending focused on low-carbon and decarbonised energy, such as renewables and carbon capture.
"We plan to reinforce and expand our LNG operations as demand is expected to grow through around 2040," CEO Tomohide Miyata told a news conference.
Spending over the period includes 310 billion yen in low-carbon energy, 250 billion yen in decarbonised energy, and 180 billion yen in oil and chemicals, on top of 820 billion yen to maintain its core refinery operations.
Eneos may also tap up to 1 trillion yen in management reserves for strategic investments, including in LNG, Miyata added.
Like its global peers, Eneos is shifting its business portfolio to align with the energy transition.
"But the trend toward a carbon-neutral society is slowing, and the full-scale bifurcation of the energy transition, previously expected around 2030, may be delayed," Miyata said, adding the company is in no rush to supply hydrogen and ammonia.
In the new plan, Eneos has removed its previous target of supplying up to 4 million metric tons of hydrogen by the fiscal 2040 year.
Instead, stable and affordable energy, including oil, has become more important amid rising energy security concerns, U.S. policy risks, and the growing cost of decarbonisation technologies, Miyata said.
Eneos already holds stake in LNG projects in Asia, but Miyata said U.S. projects, including Alaska LNG, could be considered if economically viable.
The refiner reported a 22% decline in net profit for the year ended March 31 and forecast a 18% drop for the current year.
It aims to raise its refinery run rate, excluding scheduled maintenance, to 90% by fiscal 2027, up from 78% in 2024.

Toyota chairman to face scrutiny over $33 billion deal at shareholder meeting
TOYOTA CITY, Japan, June 12 (Reuters) - Toyota Motor (7203.T), opens new tab Chairman Akio Toyoda is likely to face scrutiny over a $33 billion take-private deal of a key supplier when shareholders assemble for the Japanese automaker's annual general meeting on Thursday. This year's gathering, set to kick off at 10:00 a.m. (0100 GMT), marks the first time in three years that Toyoda isn't being opposed by a shareholder proxy adviser. Nevertheless, the grandson of the automaker's founder is likely to face some tough questions about governance - if this week's meeting of supplier Toyota Industries (6201.T), opens new tab is anything to go by. Shareholders of forklift maker Toyota Industries on Tuesday voiced disapproval of the 4.7 trillion yen ($33 billion) take-private bid from its parent that they said was unfair to minority shareholders. The world's top-selling automaker plans to take its supplier private in a complex, multi-part transaction that includes an offer price of 16,300 yen a share. While the price might be a good deal for Toyota Motor shareholders, critics of the bid, including London-based Zennor Asset Management, have raised concern about the transaction, particularly around the treatment of minority shareholders. "This was not a decision that neglected minority shareholders, but rather one that was taken with all the factors in mind," Toyota Industries' President Koichi Ito told shareholders on Tuesday. Under the deal, a new holding company will be set up. Unlisted real estate company Toyota Fudosan will invest 180 billion yen while Toyoda will invest 1 billion yen. Toyota Motor will invest 700 billion yen for non-voting preferred shares. Tuesday's meeting ran for almost two hours, Toyota Industries' longest ever, the company said. Executives also took some two dozen questions from shareholders, the most ever. Hong Kong-based Oasis Management, which has shares in both Toyota Motor and Toyota Industries, has said it would push for a higher price. Toyota has said the acquisition would allow Toyota Industries to deepen collaboration with group companies, without concerns of short-term profit targets, as Toyota itself becomes a broader "mobility company". This year, prominent proxy advisory firms Glass Lewis and Institutional Shareholder Services have both recommended that shareholders re-elect Toyoda. Glass Lewis had recommended voting against him the previous two years and ISS had last year. Toyoda's position at the automaker had come under scrutiny over broader governance concerns. Neither proxy adviser gave specific reasons for the change in their recommendations this year. Toyoda has seen shareholder support slip in recent years. He was re-elected to the board with 72% backing in 2024, in what he later said marked the lowest support rating ever for a Toyota director. That was down from 85% and 96%, respectively, in the prior two years. In a July 2024 interview by Toyota's own news outlet, Toyoda said his seat on the board could be at risk if shareholder support continued to fall. Toyota Industries, formerly Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, was founded in 1926 to make automatic looms. An automotive division within the company was set up and later spun off as Toyota Motor.

Nintendo says sales of its Switch 2 hit a record within four days
Nintendo says it sold more than 3.5 million of its new Switch 2 gaming consoles within the first four days since its release — breaking a record for the company. In a Wednesday announcement, Nintendo said that this marks the 'highest global sales level' for any of hardware it's sold within that window of time. The Japanese gaming company officially launched the Switch 2 on June 5. Fans of the console's eight-year-old predecessor have been clamoring for an upgrade for years. Throngs of gamers stood in long lines outside stores for the Switch 2's release around the world last week — less than two months after a chaotic rush for preorders quickly sold out. Nintendo is counting on the Switch 2 to boost sagging sales. And in addition to a larger screen and new games, the console has added social features aimed at luring new players into online gaming. Nintendo has said it expects to sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles for the fiscal year through March 2026. The 3.5 million sold in the first four days includes the Nintendo Switch 2's Mario Kart World Bundle, as well as the Switch 2's Japanes e-language and multi-language systems sold in Japan. The Switch 2's baseline price of $449.99 is significantly higher than the original Switch's $299 price tag. While new bells and whistles may account for a sizeable portion of that hike, experts have previously noted that new tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump are also a contributor. Evaluating the impact of these import taxes also led Nintendo to delay its April preorders by several weeks.

Japan's JERA agrees to buy US LNG to rebalance supply portfolio
TOKYO, June 12 (Reuters) - JERA, Japan's biggest power generator, has agreed to new supply deals for U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) from four projects to diversify its global portfolio away from its reliance on Australia, it said on Thursday. JERA plans to buy up to 5.5 million metric tons per annum (mtpa) of U.S. LNG under 20-year contracts, with deliveries starting around 2030. That total includes some previously reported deals as well as newly announced agreements. The move illustrates Japan's efforts to seek stable and flexible LNG supply to strengthen energy security and meet growing electricity demand driven by expanding data centres. The country is the world's second-largest LNG importer after China. JERA, Japan's biggest LNG buyer, has signed a heads of agreement with Sempra Infrastructure for 1.5 mtpa from its Port Arthur LNG phase 2 project and a HOA with Cheniere Marketing for up to 1 mtpa from Corpus Christi LNG and Sabine Pass LNG. The Japanese utility also signed a 20-year sales and purchase agreement (SPA) with U.S. LNG developer Commonwealth LNG for 1 mtpa from its Louisiana project. On Tuesday, sources familiar with the negotiations told Reuters about the deal though both companies declined to comment at the time. The 5.5 mtpa figure also includes its deal announced on May 29 with NextDecade (NEXT.O), opens new tab to buy 2 mtpa from its Rio Grande LNG project. All four are 20-year, free-on-board contracts with no destination restrictions, although the Cheniere deal could go beyond 20 years, JERA said. "We made these decisions because cost-competitive and flexible LNG is essential as we look towards the 2030s," JERA's Global CEO and Chair Yukio Kani told Reuters. He added that LNG has become increasingly important amid rising power demand from data centres and the soaring costs of cleaner alternatives like hydrogen and ammonia. "We were also aiming to secure contracts with the projects already under development and tied to the EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) agreements before the recent surge in LNG project costs and interest rates," he said. The announcement comes amid ongoing trade talks between Japan and the United States, though Kani stressed there was no government pressure behind the deals which he said were purely private sector decisions. "We are rebalancing towards the global supply mix," he said, to reduce its weighting toward Australia. After the new deals, the U.S. will supply nearly 30% of JERA's LNG mix, up from 10% now. Oceania and Asia, including Australia, currently account for more than half. JERA, jointly owned by Tokyo Electric Power (9501.T), opens new tab and Chubu Electric Power (9502.T), opens new tab, already buys U.S. supply from Freeport LNG and Cameron LNG. In 2023, it signed a 20-year contract to buy 1 mtpa from Venture Global's (VG.N), opens new tab CP2 project.
