
Mother-daughter relationships shape Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's return to fiction
In Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's latest novel, Dream Count, her character Chiamaka is found alone in the pandemic, reflecting on her past relationships that didn't go the distance.
She looks back at all the men she's been with, not as a body count, but as a dream count, as in the dreams of a life together never realized.
Despite some of the questionable men of her past, Chiamaka is still holding out hope for a relationship in which she is fully known by someone else — and tries to learn about herself from the frictions of her entanglements.
For Adichie, the isolation of COVID was the perfect backdrop for Chiamaka to undergo this introspection.
"It makes you aware of your own mortality," said Adichie on Bookends with Mattea Roach. "It gives you an opportunity to look inward in a way that ordinary life just doesn't."
However, the idea of being known by someone else can be elusive, she said, because it's almost impossible to totally know oneself.
In her own life, the sudden death of her father during lockdown showed her versions of herself she didn't recognize.
She explained that she saw herself as someone who reacts to difficult situations by "going cold" — but upon hearing that her father died, she was "taken aback by the melodrama" of her response.
"I threw myself down on the ground and I was pounding, pounding the floor and did not realize I was doing this. I was just so overtaken by the devastation of the news."
"I was surprised that I had reacted in that way," she said. "And so I started thinking about how much I knew myself and the idea that we can surprise ourselves and we do surprise ourselves."
Coming back to fiction
The bestselling author of novels Purple Hibiscus, Half of A Yellow Sun and Americanah, Adichie was born in Nigeria and now splits her time between there and the United States.
Americanah won the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction in 2013, but since then, Adichie has turned to nonfiction, writing powerful essays that became Ted Talks and short books, including We Should All Be Feminists, which was sampled by in Beyoncé's song Flawless and inspired a t-shirt from Dior.
Dream Count is Adichie's return to fiction after 12 years and it weaves the perspectives of four women, moving between Nigeria, Guinea and the United States.
She dedicates the book to her mother, who died in March 2021. And whereas her grief for her father left her grappling for language, she said that losing her mother actually brought her back to fiction.
"You're so unwilling to accept something that it then forces a different kind of eloquence on you," Adichie said. "I really think that my mother, in a kind of strange and spiritual way, I feel as though she kind of helped me start writing because she realized that I might go mad if I didn't."

Unwittingly, Dream Count became a novel about the power of platonic love, celebrating female friendships and mother-daughter relationships.
"I did not even realize how much of the book was about mothers and daughters until I was almost done and I went back and read what I had," said Adichie. "My mother's spirit is here, I thought. In a more prosaic way, I'm dealing with my issues."
The mothers and daughters in Dream Count love each other very much — but sometimes don't understand each other — yet are there to support one another when times are difficult.
"Part of my grieving process has been regret because I think that there are times when I was short with my mother in ways that I did not need to be and it made me think about how mother-daughter relationships can be much more complicated and sometimes unnecessarily thorny than daughter-father relationships."
Lessons from motherhood
Adichie also now has a daughter and twin boys, an experience that has taught her a lot about herself.
"I've learned that I'm not endlessly patient," she said, laughing, and explained how powerful her feelings for her children are — a love and obsession that she could never have imagined.
But beyond that love for them, she's also gained a level of uncertainty that fuels her.
"I think I'm less smug and also slightly less sure," she said. "That has been good for me. Even just as a writer, there's a kind of uncertainty that I think feeds creativity."
"I'm still self-confident and I don't apologize for that. But maybe it's that terror at the heart of loving children. I'm just constantly worried about my children. I think it does something to you and I think I like what it's done for me."
While becoming a mother did help Adichie get closer to knowing herself, she's still uncertain about who she really is — and so are the characters in Dream Count.
"It just feels to me that it's something that we will always long for and never quite get there," she said. "But maybe the longing is the point."

Just Trust Me off to a storybook start
Former horse trainer John Mulligan said it looked like a scene from the movie 50-1, a film based on the true story of longshot Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and his happy-go-lucky group of crazy cowboy owners who beat the bluebloods at their own game in 2009. This wasn't Kentucky and groom-owner-trainers Dewey Williams and Eugene Burns weren't quite in the Derby. Yet. This was Tuesday night racing at Assiniboia Downs. 'They just looked like a couple of good ole boys, happier than ever, walking into the winner's circle,' said Mulligan. 'It was a scene right out of that movie.' With a smile from ear to ear and a jovial laugh, the big orange-haired Burns led slick three-year-old colt Just Trust Me and jockey Antonio Whitehall into the winner's circle to meet trainer Williams after winning the first stakes race of the local season. Their $3,500 purchase had just won the $24,000 Fancy As Overnight Stakes, but it might as well have been the Kentucky Derby based on the happiness meter. Not only did the Williams-Burns combo win the first stakes race of the season, they also upped their local record to a perfect three-for-three. Just Trust Me drew off to win by five lengths and it could have been more. It was a mismatch for a horse that might just be the local Manitoba Derby horse to beat. 'We'll see,' said Burns. 'He's going to the Golden Boy next.' Burns and Williams arrived from Turf Paradise with nine horses, four purchased in Northern California for less than US$10,000. All have won. Just Trust Me's victory was another triumph for red-hot jockey Antonio Whitehall. The three-time riding champion scored a hat trick Monday and added two more wins Tuesday, tying him atop the jockey standings with nine victories. 'Whitehall's been coming down and getting on a bunch of these,' said Williams. 'Sheldon Chickeness has been getting on horses for us too. He's a big part of our program. And Will Tourangeau, Monique Goulet, and Jared Brown have all helped us out. People are just nicer here.' Besides Williams and Burns, the barn crew includes Michelle Bennett and blacksmith Chance Dale, who's followed them from Phoenix to Wyoming to Winnipeg. 'They have a really good three-year-old program here, starting with the Fancy As Stakes, then the Golden Boy, and another mile prep before the Manitoba Derby. That's why we came.' Just Trust Me had already established solid credentials in California and Arizona before his local triumph. He broke his maiden at Del Mar in California, won an allowance race at Pleasanton, and finished second in the Luke Kruytbosch Overnight Stakes at Turf Paradise. When asked about their best horse ever, Williams was direct: 'Probably this one.' Burns and Williams have both won Idaho Cups and Colorado Derbies. Williams has also won the Sunray Park Futurity, the Sunray Park Derby, and the Albuquerque Derby in the past. Now they have a Manitoba Derby horse, and that's a whole different world. With their perfect start and genuine aspirations, these good ole boys from Idaho are proving sometimes the best stories come from the most unlikely places.

Music Review: On Addison Rae's ‘Addison,' a new pop powerhouse is born
NEW YORK (AP) — The pop album of the summer is here. Addison Rae's debut, 'Addison,' is full, stuffed with bejeweled, hypnotic pop songs for the post-'BRAT' crowd. Hedonism has a new hero. For those who've watched her rise, it's almost impossible to believe. It wasn't so long ago – almost exactly a year into the COVID-19 pandemic – that a young Rae went on 'The Tonight Show' and taught its host Jimmy Fallon a few stiff, meme-able TikTok dance moves, then what made up the bulk of her career. It was met with almost immediate backlash, as is common for young women with viral posts. But she wielded it like a weapon: Social media celebrity begat acting roles for Rae, then a coveted collaboration with Charli XCX in the form of a 'Von Dutch' remix, and now, at age 24, her final form: becoming the hyper-ambitious, hyper-femme pop star for the current moment. As a full body of work, 'Addison' taps into the genre-agnostic zeitgeist, where pop music appears edgy and elastic. The songs speak for themselves, from the pitch-shifted trip-hop 'Headphones On' and the snapped percussion, minor chords, NSFW lyrics and vanishing synths of 'High Fashion' to the Madonna 'Ray of Light'-cosplay 'Aquamarine' atop a house beat and its chantable, spoken chorus: 'The world is my oyster / Baby, come touch the pearl / The world is my oyster / And I'm the only girl.' Humor and girlhood are intertwined with less of a Sabrina Carpenter-wink and more of cheery irony. 'Money loves me,' she yells on 'Money Is Everything.' 'I'm the richest girl in the world!' Then, a giggle and a kiss. ('Girl,' to this writer's count, is uttered 20 times across the album. Across its 12 tracks, she is both the divine feminine and the girl next door. Often, they are one in the same.) Rae isn't reinventing the wheel here, but she is carefully pulling from her inspirations. Her story recalls Britney Spears: The pair are from Louisiana, became famous young, and recorded their unique, sensual, layered pop music in Stockholm, Sweden, in and around super producer Max Martin. There's the earned Lana Del Rey parity, like in the 'Born to Die'-channeling 'Diet Pepsi,' echoes of Charli in the bouncy opener 'New York,' and tinges of ethereal Enya production on the dreamy 'Summer Forever.' For 'Addison,' Rae partnered with two primary collaborators – Luka Kloser and Elvira Anderfjärd, who goes simply by Elvira – an unusually small team for a major label pop release. But that intimacy is one of the album's superpowers, a sensibility that teeters between close mic recordings and big late-night anthems. In the latter case, look no further than 'Fame Is a Gun,' an easy song-of-the-summer contender, a sunglasses-in-the-club banger with synthetic vocal textures and an unignorable chorus. In the lead up to the release of 'Addison,' Rae has positioned her early TikTok fame as a means to an end. There aren't many avenues to Hollywood from Lafayette, Louisiana, and social media, for some, is a democratizing tool. Rae used her dance training to build a name for herself on the platform, something that has no doubt laid an ideal foundation for pop superstardom – just consider how Justin Bieber did something similar with covers on YouTube not so many years ago. It feels full circle, then, that Rae's stellar debut album aims to do what her videos on TikTok attempted to do, what she's always wanted to do — dance, and get others to dance, too.

Who is Jonathan Anderson, the man behind Dior's historic shakeup?
On Monday, luxury conglomerate LVMH named Jonathan Anderson the new creative director of Dior, making him the first designer since Christian Dior himself to oversee women's, men's and haute couture collections. LVMH had already announced in April that Anderson, 40, would succeed Kim Jones as artistic director of men's wear. Just last week, Maria Grazia Chiuri confirmed she would step down as the women's creative director at Dior after her final show in her hometown of Rome. Anderson's first men's wear collection will premiere this June, with women's wear to follow in October. For the first time in its 78-year history, Dior will skip the haute couture shows in July. 'It is a great honour to join the House of Dior as creative director of both women's and men's collections,' Anderson said in a statement. 'I have always been inspired by the rich history of this House–its depth and empathy. I look forward to working alongside its legendary Ateliers to craft the next chapter of this incredible story.' Anderson was born in 1984 and raised in Magherafelt, a town of 9,000 in Northern Ireland. At 18, he moved to Washington to study acting, but quickly discovered a passion for costume design. He moved to London and studied men's wear at the London College of Fashion, graduating in 2005, before working as a visual merchandiser for Prada. He eventually founded his namesake label, JW Anderson, in 2008. His fluid, conceptual collections made him a critical darling on London's fashion scene. In 2013, LVMH acquired a minority stake in the label and tapped Anderson to lead Loewe, then a middling Spanish house known for leather goods. In his 11-year tenure, Anderson turned Loewe into one of fashion's most relevant and sought-after brands, with annual revenues reportedly hitting US$2-billion a year. Industry insiders often compare Anderson to Karl Lagerfeld, another prolific visionary who balanced runway spectacle with commercial success. Speaking to the online publication Business of Fashion, Delphine Arnault, the chair and chief executive of Christian Dior Couture, called Anderson 'the most talented designer of his generation.' At Loewe, Anderson mastered the formula Lagerfeld invented during his decades at Chanel. Anderson would wow with a surrealist leather dress moulded to appear in constant motion while producing commercial hits including the ubiquitous Puzzle Bag. He also made Loewe a force in pop culture. Rising actors such as Ayo Edebiri, Josh O'Connor and Greta Lee starred in brand campaigns and wore Loewe on the red carpet. Loewe also sponsored the 2024 Met Gala. Dior is the second largest house in LVMH's stable, after only Louis Vuitton. Until now, it was considered too big a ship for one captain. Consolidating creative leadership in the hands of a sole designer means that Anderson can establish a unified vision. But 'there are huge implications,' wrote Lauren Sherman – the fashion journalist who pens Puck's Line Sheet newsletter – in an e-mail to The Globe and Mail. 'Anderson is of a new generation of designers that are coming into power at the peak of the luxury industry's consolidation curve. He'll need to act as a disrupter at an enormous company that generates around $10-billion a year on its own.' His appointment is also part of industry-wide turbulence: As the luxury sector slows and brands race to stay relevant, leadership changes are mounting. In 2025 alone, 17 fashion brands, including four at LVMH, announced new creative directors.
