Timeframe: When the world's first 'gold to go' ATM was launched at Emirates Palace
On May 12, 2010, the Emirates Palace hotel in Abu Dhabi, now known as Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, introduced the world's first gold-dispensing ATM. Known as Gold to Go, it was developed by the German company Ex Oriente Lux. The ATM sold 24-carat gold bars and coins directly to users.
Within a day of being unveiled, the machine sold out. Although capable of holding up to 300 pieces, the gold ATM carried only 100 for its debut, said Thomas Geissler, the chief executive of Ex Oriente Lux.
The first piece of gold, a one-ounce bar, was presented as a token of respect to Sheikha Fatima, Mother of the Nation.
On the day of the unveiling, two men each spent almost Dh20,000 buying each of the 10 gold products on offer, The National reported at the time.
Mohamed Al Foulathi, an engineer and businessman who was an investor with Gold To Go, said then that the idea was to develop the device and expand across the region and beyond. "Anything to do with gold has to come to Abu Dhabi and then go on through to the world," he said.
The machine dispensed 24-carat gold bars in a range of sizes, including 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 250 grams, as well as one-ounce options. It also offered gift boxes containing gold coins embossed with designs such as the South African Krugerrand, Canadian maple leaf and Australian kangaroo. Each gold bar was sealed in plastic with an anti-counterfeit hologram and included details of its purity, price per gram and the company's 10-day return policy.
Prices were updated every 10 minutes based on real-time gold market rates. The ATM itself was gold-plated, matching the opulence of the Emirates Palace Hotel.
The machine was equipped with advanced security features, including anti-money laundering software and a robust physical structure designed to resist tampering. It also had an automatic shutdown mechanism in case of malfunction.
Two more machines were installed in Dubai, one at Atlantis, The Palm in 2011 and another in Souk Madinat Jumeirah in 2013. The machines could also be found around the world, with three in the US and Germany, two in Portugal and one each in Italy, Switzerland and the UK.
The Abu Dhabi gold ATM had been removed by 2016 and the two in Dubai were taken out by 2017.

UAE-Serbia CEPA officially comes into force
A new era of bilateral economic cooperation Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade, expressed his enthusiasm regarding the CEPA's implementation, stating: 'The activation of the UAE-Serbia CEPA heralds a new chapter in our economic relations, creating new avenues for collaboration, investment, and trade that will benefit both our nations." He emphasised the agreement's potential to create jobs, strengthen supply chains, and provide a thriving environment for businesses. Boosting non-oil trade and market access The UAE-Serbia CEPA aims to boost bilateral non-oil trade, which reached approximately US$121.4 million in 2024, double the volume of 2021. The agreement is expected to contribute US$351 million to UAE GDP by 2031. This is to be achieved by eliminating or reducing customs duties for over 96% of tariff lines, thereby enhancing market access. Serbia: A strategic gateway to Europe Serbia's strategic location and diversified economy make it a key partner for the UAE. The CEPA will enable increased trade and investments in critical sectors such as renewable energy, agriculture, logistics, and technology. With the UAE already accounting for 55% of Serbia's total trade with the GCC in 2023, the agreement is poised to deepen economic engagement. Driving UAE's global trade ambitions This agreement aligns with the UAE's broader CEPA strategy, which is central to its goal of increasing total non-oil trade to US$1.1 trillion and doubling the size of its economy to US$800 billion by 2031. A growing CEPA network The UAE-Serbia CEPA is the 10th agreement to officially come into force. In total, 27 CEPAs have been concluded with countries across the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, South America, and Europe, reflecting the UAE's ongoing efforts to position itself as a global trade hub.

Iran steps up production of highly enriched uranium, UN watchdog says
Iran has stepped up its production of highly enriched uranium in recent months, according to a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) seen by on Saturday. Tensions between Iran and the UN nuclear watchdog have repeatedly flared since a 2015 deal curbing Tehran's nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief fell apart. The IAEA's latest report comes as Tehran pursues delicate negotiations with the US on its nuclear programme. It said in its quarterly report that it is of "serious concern" that Iran has an estimated amount of 408.6 kilograms enriched to up to 60 per cent as of May 17, up by 133.8 kilograms since the last report in February. Uranium enriched to up to 60 per cent fissile purity is close to the roughly 90 per cent level needed for atomic weapons. According to the IAEA, Tehran is the only non-nuclear weapon state to enrich uranium to 60 per cent. Western governments have for decades suspected Iran of trying to develop a nuclear weapons capability to counter Israel's widely suspected but undeclared arsenal. Iran maintains that its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful and insists it has no intention of developing nuclear weapons. In a separate in-depth report, the IAEA criticised "less than satisfactory" co-operation from Tehran over its scrutiny of Iran's nuclear programme. "While Iran continues to co-operate with the agency on matters of routine safeguards implementation, in a number of respects... its co-operation with the agency has been less than satisfactory," the report said. It specifically notes Tehran's lack of progress in explaining nuclear material found at undeclared sites. "In particular, Iran has repeatedly either not answered, or not provided technically credible answers to, the agency's questions and has sanitised locations as listed in this report, which has impeded agency verification activities." Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said earlier on Saturday that his country considers nuclear weapons 'unacceptable', reiterating its long-standing position amid delicate negotiations with the US. 'If the issue is nuclear weapons, yes, we too consider this type of weapon unacceptable,' Mr Araghchi, Iran's lead negotiator in the talks, said in a televised speech. 'We agree with them on this issue.' The US and Iran have held five rounds of talks in Oman and Rome over the past few weeks, aiming to revive or replace the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, which President Donald Trump withdrew the US from during his first term, in 2018. These discussions, mediated by Oman, have centred on Iran's uranium enrichment levels, the lifting of US sanctions and the implementation of nuclear inspections. While both sides have described the talks as constructive, significant disagreements remain, particularly regarding Iran's insistence on its right to enrich uranium and the US demand for a complete halt to this activity. This week, President Trump said his administration was 'very close to a solution' on an Iran nuclear agreement. He also said he had warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against a military strike on Iran, which would set back Washington's efforts to broker a deal. The New York Times, which said Mr Netanyahu had been threatening to sabotage the US-Iran talks by striking Tehran's nuclear enrichment sites. 'We're very close to a solution now,' Mr Trump added. 'Now, that could change at any moment – it could change with a phone call but, right now, I think [Iran] want to make a deal.'
