T-Pain Calls Drake Out For Not Living Up To His Word Of 'Gracefully' Leaving Music Behind

T-Pain Calls Drake Out For Not Living Up To His Word Of 'Gracefully' Leaving Music Behind

Yahoo7 hours ago

Drake has been discussing his inevitable retirement for almost a decade, yet, for a variety of reasons, has continued to release music to much success and critique. T-Pain recently called him out for not living up to his word of 'gracefully' leaving music behind.
'The one thing I learned from Drake, here's the crazy thing, the one thing I learned from but one thing he hasn't followed, his own words. Drake said 'I want to be one of those people that gracefully bows out and not get kicked out,'' the 40-year-old singer said on a recent episode of the Crash Dummies podcast. Teddy was referencing Drizzy's 2023 interview 'A Moody Conversation' with Lil Yachty.
'I have ever since said, 'Thank y'all, I appreciate y'all. I'll see y'all when I drop—don't worry about it, I'll just drop something. Let me know if you heard it,'' Pain said with a joking tone. 'Drake is like, 'No, listen, OK, I got another one. Hold on, check this out. Y'all ain't like that one? OK, real quick, just one more. Let me try one more.''
The 'Buy U A Drank' singer claimed that in just two years, the Toronto superstar has become the person that he 'didn't want to be.' He expounded on that point and how it related to his career: 'Like, when he said that 'I wanna gracefully bow out and not get kicked out,' I was like, 'You know what? I'm out this bi**h.' I'm out this motherf**ker. I'm not trying to impress y'all ni**as. Y'all ni**as don't give a f**k if I live or die. Why the f**k would I keep trying to impress y'all? I'm out. I'm done. I did everything that I'm trying to do. I changed the game. I made a sound. What else?'
The five-time Grammy winner did that interview with Yachty in February 2023, just under five months before his It's All A Blur tour with 21 Savage. In October 2023, he released For All The Dogs and followed up with a deluxe version in November. That following February, he extended the It's All A Blur tour and incorporated the Big As The What? edition co-starring J. Cole. Of course, in the middle of that tour, he was targeted by Kendrick Lamar, Future, Metro Boomin, and more, setting off the biggest rap beef in Hip-Hop history.
He released several diss songs from April to May, and followed up with a few singles and features that summer. This past February, he released a joint album, $ome $exy $ongs 4 U, with PARTYNEXTDOOR while on the Anita Max Win tour in Australia. Drake is set to hit the road with PND for the $ome $pecial $hows 4 U tour in the United Kingdom and Europe from July to September, and has been teasing his next solo album.
With all of that said, T-Pain wasn't wrong in saying that Drake hasn't lived up to his word, but only if his perception of that statement was that the father of one planned to gracefully bow out that year. The 'Nokia' artist has been a high volume act throughout his career, and is also the same man who rapped 'The most successful rapper 35 and under/ I'm assumin' everybody's 35 and under/ That's when I plan to retire, man it's already funded' on the 2016 Views cut 'Weston Road Flows.'

Critics call Lorde's ‘Virgin' both a ‘reinvention' and ‘a return to bangers'

Four years after her pandemic-induced pivot to sunshine and acoustic guitars on Solar Power, Lorde has returned with her fourth album, Virgin. Behind the scenes, the Kiwi pop star changed up producers, leaving behind recent collaborator Jack Antonoff, but the first reviews for Virgin are heralding the return of the old Lorde (in some ways, at least). Vulture's Craig Jenkins frames the album as a response to the release of Solar Power and celebrates its understanding of the singer's audience. More from Gold Derby Marge lives! Here are 3 other 'Simpsons' characters that returned from the grave - and 3 who stayed dead Fast cars vs. killer dolls: 'F1,' 'M3GAN 2.0' gear up for box-office showdown "Everything about Virgin, Lorde's fourth album, feels like a reaction to trials preceding and following Solar Power," he writes. "Virgin is rife with epiphanies earned in tussles with one's own established persona. But these cerebral dispatches realize their audience often experiences the work communally and tends to enjoy it most when accompanied by flowing synths and insistent drums. Pure Heroine and Melodrama left indelible marks on mainstream music; Lorde is instrumental to the 21st-century whisper-singer epidemic. Heroine's lean minimalism is one of many sonic precursors to the commercial breakthrough of Taylor Swift's 1989 and thus kin to its many scion. Virgin is a return to bangers." And while the sound may be something more akin to the tracks off of Pure Heroine and Melodrama, there's a strong consensus that Virgin represents a lyrics and sonic evolution for Lorde. "The result is nearly 40 minutes of undeniable pop bangers and jagged synth flashes where Lorde wipes parts of her past clean and makes room for the adult she has crystallized into," writes Rolling Stone's Maya Georgi. "Since [Solar Power], fans have clamored for Lorde to return to the swooping, alternative synth-pop that defined her early career, which means the stakes are particularly high for Virgin. She has answered the call with an album that isn't trying to capture something from the past, but instead leans into the chaos of reinvention." A significant element of the changes present in Virgin's lyrical content seems to be the natural passage of time. Lorde broke onto the scene with "Royals" at the age of 16. For those keeping track at home, that was 12 years ago. "You could call Virgin a coming-of-age album for Lorde's late 20s. It's as if she's finally realized that to come of age is actually a messy, lifelong process — that as sturdy as you think your sense of self is, it'll keep snagging on things that unravel it," writes NPR's Hazel Cillis. "As familiar as Virgin might sound at first play, the Lorde here isn't — and that's a good thing. 'Who's gon' love me like this?' Lorde sings on 'Man of the Year,' in the throes of a breakup. 'Now I'm broken open?' The old Lorde would never sing that. The old Lorde would never even let us see her break." While some critics, like Paste's Matt Mitchell, find the return to bangers as somewhat of a step down in ambition, the move doesn't keep Virgin from being a major piece of work. "Musically, it's the least-ambitious album Lorde has ever made, thanks to her avoidance of the big hooks and explosive resolutions that pop orthodoxy demands," he writes. "But, in an undeniably personal collection of songs full of clichés and gestures toward conversations around earthly desires, gender, and habitual living, it's Ella Yelich O'Connor's most important statement yet." And since this is a Lorde album — which is to say that it's influential — there's a utility in digging through Virgin to see where it will inevitably lead pop music for the next few years. "Obviously, Virgin is very autobiographical and a bit of an elaborate self-cleanse, but it's also the sound of a person in the second half of their twenties finding wisdom and themselves," writes Variety's Jem Aswad. "And judging by how often in the past few years she's been cited as a major influence by young female artists, it will be interesting to see how far this album reaches." High Potential Adds A Shameless Star For Season 2, But I'm More Excited About Kaitlin Olson's Behind-The-Scenes Promotion

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. News about some of the biggest primetime shows of the 2025 TV schedule can be pretty quiet during summer hiatus, but fans of ABC's breakout High Potential have not one but two reveals to celebrate. The hit drama has expanded the cast to include a former Shameless cast member, not too long after the surprising cancellation of his CBS show. At the same time, I'm ready to cheer for leading lady Kaitlin Olson getting a well-deserved promotion. Steve Howey, possibly best known for his eleven-season run as Kev Ball on Shameless, has joined the cast of High Potential as a Season 2 series regular, according to Deadline. The outlet reports that Howey will play Jesse Wagner, the new captain of the precinct with a savviness for politics, a knack for charm, and a talent for how to dress in expensive attire. While that sounds like the description of a character who might not get on well with Morgan (Kaitlin Olson), Wagner reportedly also likes to think outside of the action and wind up in the midst of action. I'm already curious to see what he makes of the unconventional partnership between Morgan and Karadec (Daniel Sunjata). Olson debunked the idea that she was playing towards a Morgan/Karadec romance, but that doesn't mean their bond – such as it is – won't seem particularly strange to a newcomer. I'm definitely on board with seeing what Steve Howey brings to the series. As the co-lead of CBS' much-hyped True Lies TV adaptation a couple years ago, I'd honestly expected him to be busy over on CBS for the foreseeable future. That show's surprising failure to grab ratings led to guest spots on NBC's Brilliant Minds and Happy's Place (for a fun Reba reunion). High Potential will be his first series regular gig since True Lies in 2023, and has the built-in success of the first season that he couldn't enjoy on CBS. In case you thought that Kaitlin Olson couldn't be promoted any further since she's the lead of the series, think again! The same Deadline report also reveals that the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star has been bumped up from producer to executive producer. Now, I'm not sure if that means any actual change in Olson's duties behind the scenes, but I love to see her get that recognition. After sixteen seasons and counting of Always Sunny episodes that list Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, and Charlie Day – a.k.a. the other three of the original four stars – as executive producers, it hits just right to see Olson getting that title for her very successful solo show. That's not to imply that she's not getting credit where credit's due for Always Sunny. She was one of the original four main stars (which was bumped up to five after Danny DeVito signed on) from the start, simply without having a heavy producing/writing hand behind the scenes. I just like seeing her get some added spotlight, especially since Morgan is actually a character to root for. Sweet Dee on Always Sunny… well, the point of that comedy isn't watching a group of heroes you want to cheer on, even when surrounded by children in the Abbott Elementary crossover! High Potential will give Olson her first executive producer credit since The Mick, which ran for two seasons on Fox from 2017-2018 as Olson's first network TV show as the top-billed star. This wasn't on the list of things she said she wants Season 2 to dive into, but great to see all the same. Unlike Doctor Odyssey on ABC, the network wasted no time in renewing High Potential for the 2025-2026 TV season, and it will return to primetime on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET after Dancing with the Stars. No premiere date has been set just yet, however, so you can always check out earlier episodes streaming with a Hulu subscription now. As for Always Sunny, Season 17 launches on FXX on Wednesday, July 9 at 9 p.m. ET.
