NTR Bharosa pension distribution in a festive atmosphere

The Hindu2 days ago

Minister for Housing and Information and Public Relations Kollusu Parthasaradhi said that under the NTR Bharosa scheme, ₹2,712 crore are being disbursed every month to 65 lakh beneficiaries across the State. In Eluru district alone, ₹113 crore are being distributed to 2.58 lakh people, he said.
On Saturday (May 31), the Minister conducted a surprise inspection of NTR Bharosa pension distribution at Agiripalli in Nuzvid Constituency. He visited the homes of some beneficiaries, interacted with their family members and handed over the pension amounts.
On this occasion, he said that Andhra Pradesh is the only State in the country to provide social security pensions on such a large scale, with thousands of crores being spent. He mentioned that Andhra Pradesh is spending ₹33,600 crore annually on social pensions under the NTR Bharosa scheme. He noted that in Agiripalli Mandal alone, ₹41,29,950 was disbursed to 9,425 beneficiaries.
Despite the challenging financial situation of the state, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is steering the administration effectively with his vast experience and is giving top priority to the welfare of the poor, the Minister said.
He emphasised that, unlike the previous government, which took five years to increase the pension amount from ₹2,000 to ₹3,000, the current government raised the pension from Rs. 3,000 to Rs.4,000 within just 10 days of coming to power.
He assured that pensions are being delivered to beneficiaries at their doorstep on the 1st of every month. If the beneficiary is unavailable, the amount will be delivered on the 2nd. Since June 1 falls on a Sunday, the government ensured the pensions were distributed a day in advance.
The Minister said this reflects the government's sincere commitment to the poor. The government is providing ₹4,000 to the elderly, ₹6,000 to the differently-abled, ₹10,000 to patients suffering from kidney and other chronic diseases, and ₹15,000 to bedridden individuals as promised by the Chief Minister, who stands by such families in their time of need.

Smart meter rollout sparks outcry

Vijayawada: CPM State Committee members Baburao and D Kasinath vehemently criticised the Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Company Limited (APCPDCL)'s directive to install smart meters in residential homes. They displayed copies of the orders issued by APCPDCL while addressing a press conference here on Sunday. Baburao stated that it is 'deplorable' that the coalition government has ordered the installation of Adani prepaid smart electricity meters in homes as its 'first anniversary gift.' Within the CPDCL's jurisdiction, 1.028 million homes in major cities across the combined Krishna, Guntur, and Prakasam districts, totalling 17.24 lakh meters, have been slated for installation. Baburao asserted that the installation of Adani smart meters in every home is a 'systematic arrangement for Adani's permanent exploitation' of every family every day, every hour. The phased installation of 20 million smart meters in every home and commercial establishment across the state is estimated to impose a burden of Rs 25,000 crore on the public, with each meter and its maintenance costing approximately Rs 13,000. Consumers will reportedly be charged a meter rental fee of Rs 100 to Rs 200 per month for 93 months without their full awareness. The 'Time of the Day' metering system, which will record readings hourly and charge higher rates during peak consumption hours at night, will impose an 'even greater burden.' Baburao said that the Electricity Regulatory Commission has already amended its regulations to facilitate this, with the government issuing directives for meter installation for every consumer, including residential homes. He noted that an Adani office and warehouse have already been established at Vidyut Soudha, the main electricity office in Vijayawada, signifying the handing over of the electricity sector. He listed the towns where residential meter installations are initially ordered under CPDCL: Vijayawada, Guntur, Machilipatnam, Ongole, Chilakaluripeta, Gudivada, Amaravati, and Mangalagiri. He demanded a halt to smart meter installations in residential homes, removal of meters already installed in commercial establishments, cancellation of the meter agreement with Adani, and abolition of electricity adjustment charges. Kashi Nath added that a plan has been devised to install smart meters in 352,936 homes in Vijayawada alone. He mentioned that several protests have already been held in Vijayawada. He concluded by stating that it is 'improper' for 'father and son' Chandrababu and Lokesh to go back on their word.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis says Nashik Kumbh to begin October 31, 2026; first holy dips on August 2, 2027

Rs 4,000 CRORE DEVPT WORK TENDERS PROCESSED: CM Devendra Fadnavis welcoming mahants of 13 akhadas in Nashik on Sunday NASHIK: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis declared the Simhastha Kumbh Mela in Nashik will commence with a flag hoisting ceremony at Ramkunda on Oct 31, 2026, while the first Amrut Snans in both Nashik and Trimbakeshwar are planned for Aug 2, 2027. The declaration was made after Fadnavis consulted with leading seers from the Vaishnav and Shaiva sects in Nashik city, accompanied by state ministers Girish Mahajan and Dada Bhuse. Fadnavis said, 'After discussions with the seers, we finalised the dates for the Amrut Snan at both Nashik and Trimbakeshwar, which will start on Aug 2, 2027. This time, there are a large number of Parvasnan (bathing dates) spread across 2027-28 and, therefore, we will see a large number of visitors to Nashik. Govt is taking up all the measures for this.' The Amrut Snan schedule for both venues—Nashik (Vaishnav gathering) and Trimbakeshwar (Shaiva gathering)—is confirmed for Aug 2 and Aug 31, 2027. The subsequent Amrut Snans have been scheduled on Sept 11 in Nashik and Sept 12 in Trimbakeshwar. Fadnavis said, 'The meeting with the mahants and all-important office-bearers of all 13 akhadas was held cordially, and we patiently heard all their demands. We brought to their notice that we have already processed tenders for more than Rs 4,000 crore in developmental works (including roads, construction, and beautification of ghats etc.), of which a few are in the last stage. Besides, tenders for works worth Rs 2,000 crore will also be issued soon. ' He said the Nashik corporation's plan to set up sewage treatment plants is moving ahead. Related ministers are working on rolling out steps for effective crowd management and to ensure provision of facilities.

AP's share in KG Basin demanded

Rajamahendravaram: CPI State Assistant Secretary Muppalla Nageswara Rao demanded that Andhra Pradesh receive its rightful share of the natural wealth being extracted from the Krishna-Godavari (KG) Basin, particularly in the form of gas and oil. He announced that the CPI will organise a state-level conference in Rajahmundry in July to raise awareness and mobilise public support for this cause. Addressing the media at the CPI office here on Sunday, Nageswara Rao alleged that corporate companies are looting natural resources worth lakhs of crores of rupees from Andhra Pradesh. He urged the people of the state to rise in protest against what he described as systematic exploitation. 'The KG Basin contains more oil reserves than Bombay High. Resources worth around Rs 60 lakh crore are being siphoned off by corporate entities,' Rao stated. He said that, as per the Indian Constitution, 30% of the revenue generated from the extraction of natural resources must be reinvested in the development of the region they are sourced from. However, he claimed this directive is not being implemented in Andhra Pradesh. Given the state's dire financial condition, he urged the government to support the CPI's agitation for a fair share in resource revenue. He also expressed disappointment over the silence of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan regarding the ongoing protests by workers seeking to protect the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. CPI District Secretary Tatipaka Madhu, Assistant Secretary Kundravu Rambabu, and City Secretary V Kondala Rao were present.
