Newport County AFC League Two safety confirmed, Walsall 0-0
County knew a win over promotion-chasing Walsall in yesterday's early kick-off at Rodney Parade would finish the job.
A battling 0-0 draw after Ciaran Brennan was sent off 12 minutes from time wasn't enough to get over the line, but Carlisle had to win to keep Nelson Jardim's men sweating.
And the Cumbrians, now managed by former Wales boss Mark Hughes, could only manage a 1-1 draw at Accrington so cannot now catch the Exiles.
Speaking before safety was confirmed, Jardim said he was happy to secure a draw against Walsall - especially after the visitors had a stoppage-time winner eventually ruled out for handball.
"It's a valuable point against a very good team that has spent a lot of months at the top of the table," said Jardim.
"The way we competed and performed, and kept another clean sheet, and showed the fight and the organisation we need was positive.
"I think it was quite even, and for spells we were the better team. After the red card we had to adjust a couple of things and the injuries also had an impact."
Brennan was shown a straight red for what was deemed a dangerous challenge on Taylor Allen.
"The red card was in the 78th minute but, with injury time, we had to play for 22 minutes a man down and we showed the character and the fight that sometimes these boys have been accused of not having," added Jardim, who felt the officials got it right in disallowing Oisin McEntee's goal at the death.
"We could see it clearly. It was a handball and it was the right decision."
In a dramatic finale to what had been a humdrum Easter Monday contest, County also lost substitute Josh Martin to injury after a collision with Walsall goalkeeper Tommy Simkin.
"It was a nasty clash," said Jardim. "I can recall Jacob Carney getting sent off earlier in the season for a very similar situation.
Obviously, with the amount of blood he had in his face, it looked serious."
Martin is likely to miss the Exiles' penulimate match at Fleetwood Town on Saturday, while veteran defender James Clarke's season looks to be over after he was forced off with a groin strain in the first half.
"Clarkey has been great, he's been playing a lot of games and we haven't been able to rotate the team as we'd wish," said Jardim.
"He brings that experience to the back line that we lacked for part of the season.
"But we knew that two games within four days was not going to be easy for him.
"He had to come off with cramps in the last game but we felt it was the right decision to play him again.
"It has come with a cost of losing him for the rest of the season."

Nick Townsend leaves League Two Newport County for Eastleigh
The 30-year-old goalkeeper entered negotiations with the Exiles at the end of last season but opted for a fresh challenge after seven years at Rodney Parade. The Antigua & Barbuda international, who racked up 209 appearances to become a County great, will now drop out of the Football League to play for the Spitfires. Eastleigh finished 13th out of 24 in the National League last season and Townsend will play under a boss who is a former goalkeeper, former Southampton, Wimbledon and Ipswich stopper Kelvin Davis. It is fair to assume that the contract length and financial package made the move to the south coast more attractive than staying in League Two on fresh County terms for stalwart Townsend. Arguably the Exiles are only still in the fourth tier thanks to his performances, particularly in a vital run of wins in February. LEGEND: Goalkeeper Nick Townsend passed 200 appearances for County (Image: Kian Abdullah/Huw Evans Agency) 'I'm glad it's all done now and it's an exciting start for me and my family to have a fresh start down here,' said the Brummie, who made the second most amount of saves in the EFL last season behind Stoke's Viktor Johansson. Townsend faced Eastleigh twice in 2024 when County earned a shot at Manchester United in the FA Cup by winning a replay at Silverlake Stadium 3-1 after a 1-1 draw at Rodney Parade. County currently have just one goalkeeper, Jacob Carney, on the books after the departures of Townsend and Lewis Webb, who failed to make an appearance after arriving midway through last season as back-up. Carney struggled when he got chances in his first season in Newport and the Exiles are closing in on a new stopper, who is likely to be first choice. 'Manager David Hughes has been prioritising a replacement and the club has already agreed personal terms with a new number one, due to be announced in due course,' said a County statement when confirming Townsend's exit. The Exiles are still in negotiations with three experienced players over fresh terms – centre-back James Clarke, midfielder Aaron Wildig and full-back/midfielder Shane McLoughlin.

Ross County striker Ronan Hale's uncertain 'what's best for my career' club future response in wake of Northern Ireland debut
Ross County striker Ronan Hale – fresh from making his Northern Ireland debut – tackled the topic of his Dingwall future. The forward, snapped up from Irish part-timers Cliftonville last summer, rattled in 18 goals in his first season in Scotland's top-flight. Unfortunately, those goals were not enough to spare the Staggies from the drop. Their play-off final defeat against Livingston means they'll kick off the new campaign in the Championship. Hale, who is under contract at the Global Energy Stadium until 2027, will cost any suitors serious cash and County boss Don Cowie will be desperate to keep him for a tilt at promotion straight back to the top-flight. Aberdeen were one of the clubs linked to Hale recently, although the Dons have set their sights elsewhere. Belfast-born Hale, who represented the Republic of Ireland at under-21 and under-19 levels, switched his eligibility to Northern Ireland last year and was handed a start in Monday's 1-0 Windsor Park win against Iceland – who beat Scotland 3-1 in Glasgow last Friday. Asked about his club future by Northern Ireland's Cool FM, Hale said: 'I'm not sure at the moment. 'Obviously, we had a disappointing end to the season by being relegated, but it's one we need to look at and see what's best for my career. 'It was a bad season (for the club), but I had a good season individually, so it's one we've got to look at and address.' Energetic Hale hit the woodwork and sliced a shot wide as he hunted a debut goal for his country. He added: 'With the first one, my eyes lit up. I actually think I hit it too well. 'With the second one, I tried to take it around the keeper and it just gets stuck under my feet. 'It wasn't meant to be, but I'm getting myself (into positions to make) these chances and I'd be raging with myself if I wasn't. 'More chances will come and I'm looking forward to it.' Hale said it had been a special night as he hopes to be involved in Northern Ireland's World Cup qualifiers against Luxembourg and Germany. He added: 'I got my chance and I thought I done myself justice. It was a very enjoyable night coming out with a 1-0 win. 'I thought I was in the game and it's something I'm looking forward to building on and getting more (games) under my belt. 'It was all about not getting caught up in the moment. It's about enjoying it. These are special moments that will last forever. 'The manager was telling me to just be myself, be disciplined, and afterwards, he said congratulations and we want to build on that. 'It was a great night with a great result, and hopefully there will be many more to come.' County, meanwhile, have confirmed four of their players have returned from their loan spells – defenders Ricki Lamie (Hamilton) and Josh Reid (Partick Thistle), striker Eamonn Brophy (Falkirk) and winger Jay Henderson (Ayr United).

EXCLUSIVE: Caley Thistle set signing sights on ex-Ross County goalkeeper after Musa Dibaga's exit
Caley Thistle are understood to be lining up a swoop for a former Ross County goalkeeper following the exit of goalie Musa Dibaga. League One Inverness had been expecting Spanish-born Dibaga to pen a new contract this summer after positive early talks. However, the 26-year-old was not able to agree terms and stunned ICT by rejecting what the Highlanders insisted was the very best they could offer, given they were in administration. Dibaga has this week signed for Northern Ireland top-flight club Crusaders, leaving the Caley Jags with just 17-year-old Szymon Rebilas on the books. Inverness, who are set to exit administration soon, will be able to sign new players from next Monday and there is a list of targets on head coach Scott Kellacher's desk. Logan Ross, who has just been released from County, has been training with ICT and is on course to secure a contract to remain in the Highlands. Although Ross never played for County's first-team, he built up a wide range of experience within the Highland League, with loan spells at Brora Rangers, Clachnacuddin, Forres Mechanics, Huntly and Lossiemouth. The 21-year-old also played League Two Elgin City last term, providing emergency cover for a game against Kelty Hearts. It is believed Kellacher and his coaching staff, in tandem with interim CEO and ex-boss Charlie Christie, will be looking to sign two goalkeepers, with Ross the first. Ross came through County's academy system and turned professional in 2020. The chance to be part of what Inverness hope will be a promotion push in League One to reach the Championship will be an attractive opportunity and chance to showcase his talents in the SPFL – should he earn the number one jersey. County, who were relegated to the Championship by losing to Livingston in the play-off final last month, are going through a major player overhaul, but main keepers Jordan Amissah and Ross Laidlaw were in front of Logan Ross in the pecking order. ICT, meanwhile, hope to have a decision on contract offers made to defender Remi Savage and midfielder Paul Allan before the weekend. ICT's pre-season schedule kicks off this month with four games over two dates against Highland League opponents, with the squad being split for either venue. On Wednesday, June 25, they will take on Nairn County and Rothes at Station Park and Mackessack Park, respectively, then on Saturday, June 28, Inverness face Clachnacuddin and Forres Mechanics at Grant Street Park and Mosset Park, respectively.
