Himachal: Kangra airport conducts full-scale emergency mock drill to test disaster preparedness
Kangra (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 28 (ANI): A full-scale emergency mock exercise was successfully conducted at Kangra Airport on Saturday. The objective of the exercise was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Aerodrome Emergency Plan (AEP) and to enhance coordination among various responding agencies, according to airport officials.
According to the simulated scenario, a Delhi to Gaggal flight (VTABC, Q400 type) reported a starboard engine failure at 1515 hours and requested priority landing. The aircraft was carrying 71 persons onboard. During its approach to Runway 33, the aircraft declared a 'May Day' and crashed near the Manjhi River.
Immediately after the report, ATC declared a full emergency and alerted all concerned agencies. Fire tenders, ambulances, medical teams, and the State Disaster Management team rushed to the crash site. Injured passengers were provided first aid and shifted to hospitals, while a few casualties were sent for DNA profiling for identification.
The exercise was closely monitored by Airport Director Dhirendra Singh, SDM Ishant Jaswal, DySP Ankit Sharma, officers from the State Fire Department, local hospitals, and the disaster response team. Coordination and response from all departments were found to be timely and effective.
The exercise aimed to enhance preparedness and ensure an efficient real-time response during actual emergencies.
The exercise followed the recent Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad.
Meanwhile,the Airports Authority of India (AAI) also conducted a mock drill at Chennai International Airport on Saturday to assess emergency preparedness for a potential plane crash.
'This mock exercise drill is a standard practice that airports undertake as part of their Airport Emergency Plan. Usually, we do it at the airport. This is the first time we are doing it outside, as we wanted to assess the preparedness of state authorities following what happened in Ahmedabad,' Airport Director of Airports Authority of India, Chennai International Airport, CV Deepak, told ANI.
'We will now hear from independent observers and fill the gaps accordingly... Approximately 300 people participated. Around 55 people participated as passengers onboard the aircraft,' he added.
On June 12, a London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a hostel complex of BJ Medical College in the Meghani Nagar area of Gujarat's Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
The DNA samples of 251 victims in the Air India plane crash have been identified.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) Lab in New Delhi is currently working intensively to examine data retrieved from the black boxes of the flight.
According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Crash Protection Module (CPM) from the front black box was safely retrieved, and on June 25, 2025, the memory module was successfully accessed and its data downloaded at the AAIB Lab. Sources familiar with the process told ANI that an identical black box, referred to as a 'golden chassis,' was used to confirm whether data could be accurately recovered from the black boxes. One black box was recovered from the rooftop of a building at the crash site on June 13, and the other from the debris on June 16. (ANI)

Born Richard Slavin in Chicago in 1950, Radhanath Swami's path to spiritual leadership began with his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement before he travelled to India to study ancient Hindu devotional traditions. There he became a disciple of A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder of the modern ISKCON movement who first brought Krishna consciousness to the West in the 1960s. He has since become a bestselling author and established the Govardhan Eco Village in India, described as a sustainable community project addressing environmental and social challenges. The Bhakti Center, where Saturday's event took place, serves as a cultural and spiritual hub offering meditation classes, lectures and devotional practices based on the Hindu text the Bhagavad Gita. Chauhan highlighted the centre's role in what he described as New York's status as a 'global city enhanced by the abundance of nonprofit groups that bring our residents together'. In accepting the honour, Radhanath Swami drew connections between his teacher's original mission to New York decades ago and the continuing work of building understanding across the city's diverse communities. Uttarakhand: Two bodies recovered after cloudburst incident in Uttarkashi
Dehradun (Uttarakhand)[India], June 29(ANI): Two bodies have been recovered after nine workers went missing from an under-construction hotel following a cloudburst in the Silai Band area on the Barkot-Yamunotri road in Uttarkashi, officials said on Sunday. Bodies of two out of the nine workers have been recovered who went missing from an under-construction hotel, at Silai Band on the Barkot-Yamunatri road in Uttarkashi, after the cloud burst incident, Uttarkashi District Magistrate's office stated in a statement. There have been landslides at two places before Silai Band and a washout of the road at one place, the statement added. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Sunday reviewed the situation with senior officials at the State Disaster Control Room following the cloudburst incident at Silai Band on the Barkot-Yamunotri road in Uttarkashi district. Earlier today, he stated that State Disaster Response Forces (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other teams are actively engaged in relief and rescue operations at the landslide-hit Silai Band area in Uttarkashi district. In a post on X, the CM wrote, 'In the tragic incident of a landslide in the Silai Band area of Barkot Tehsil, Uttarkashi district, it has been reported that some workers are missing. Teams including SDRF, NDRF, and others have reached the site and are engaged in intensive relief and rescue operations.' The CM further stated he was in constant contact with the concerned authorities. 'I am in constant contact with the concerned authorities regarding this matter. I pray to God for everyone's safety,' the post further read. Meanwhile, as many as nine workers staying at an under-construction hotel site went missing after a cloudburst severely damaged the construction site at Silai Band on the Barkot-Yamunotri Marg in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district. Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya, while speaking to ANI, stated, 'Due to a cloud burst in Silai Band on the Barkot-Yamunotri Marg of Uttarkashi district, a hotel under construction has suffered heavy damage. Eighty-nine workers staying at this under-construction hotel site are missing.' 'Eight-nine workers staying at this under-construction hotel site are missing,' Arya stated, adding that the Yamunotri route has also been severely impacted. He also informed that the Yamunotri Marg had also been affected by the heavy rainfall and debris. Furthermore, the Char Dham Yatra has been suspended for 24 hours amid a heavy rain alert. Garhwal Division Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey told ANI that the pilgrimage has been temporarily halted as a precaution. 'I have given instructions to the police and administration officials to stop the pilgrims in Haridwar, Rishikesh, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Sonprayag and Vikasnagar,' Pandey told. The suspension follows the cloudburst at Silai Band and the ongoing heavy rainfall, which has disrupted travel. Continuous rainfall on Saturday caused severe disruptions across Uttarakhand, including blockage of the National Highway near Nandprayag and Bhanerpani. In a post on X, Chamoli Police Uttarakhand stated, 'The Badrinath National Highway is blocked near Nandprayag and Bhanerpani. Work is underway to open the road.'The National Highway near Nandprayag is a critical route for pilgrims travelling to Kedarnath, making the clearance of the road a priority. (ANI)

Air India Crash: Sabotage Angle Not Ruled Out, Probe Report In 3 Months, Says Union Minister
Last Updated: Speaking on the cause of the crash, the minister called it a 'rare case,' referring to reports that both engines had failed simultaneously. A possible sabotage is among the key angles being examined in the Air India plane crash that killed 274 people in Ahmedabad last month, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said on Sunday. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is leading a thorough probe into the crash of flight AI 171, with all potential causes under scrutiny. 'It is being probed from all angles, including any possible sabotage," Mohol was quoted as saying by NDTV. He added that CCTV footage is under review and multiple agencies are involved in the investigation. The crash occurred on June 12, when Air India's London-bound Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 (flight AI 171) plunged into a residential area just moments after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft, carrying 242 people, lost altitude shortly after takeoff at around 1:30 PM, crashing into the BJ Medical College residential quarters in Meghaninagar and bursting into flames. Only one person survived, while nine individuals on the ground also lost their lives. A distress 'Mayday' call was issued by the pilot soon after takeoff, according to air traffic control officials. 'Rare Case, Probe Report In 3 Months' Speaking on the cause of the crash, Mohol called it a 'rare case," referring to reports that both engines had failed simultaneously. 'It has never happened that both engines shut down together," he said, noting that the black box, which includes the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR), will provide crucial answers. 'Once the report comes, we will be able to ascertain if it was an engine problem, fuel supply issue, or something else. It is too early to say anything definitively, but everything will come out. The report is expected within three months," he added. Rejecting reports that the black box would be sent abroad for analysis, Mohol clarified that it remains in the custody of the AAIB. 'It will not go anywhere. We will conduct the entire investigation here," he said. In response to safety concerns post-crash, the aviation minister reassured the public, stating that all 33 Boeing Dreamliners in Air India's fleet have undergone inspection by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). 'Everything was found safe. People are no longer scared and are travelling comfortably," he said.
