Issa Rae and GVO Hospitality Jazz it Up at Somerville
Actress, producer and entrepreneur Issa Rae has long uplifted and amplified the South L.A. neighborhoods where she grew up — on TV shows like her groundbreaking HBO hit Insecure and via her involvement in Destination Crenshaw, the art and culture redevelopment project celebrating the area's Black history and its future. Her partnership with GVO Hospitality's Yonnie Hagos and Ajay Relan, of Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen, has been a big part of this, too. Providing a more independent and soulful alternative to Starbucks, Hilltop has become a meeting ground for the Black community and beyond — a place for caffeine lovers, laptop workers and friend dates. After launching the original View Park space in 2018, GVO's popular concept has expanded to four locations across Los Angeles — and Rae got involved in 2019 with the opening of the Inglewood branch. Now the trio are tackling something new — something alluring and nighttime-geared, where locals and visitors alike can get dressed up, enjoy a mindful food and drink menu and have a little relaxed, sophisticated fun.'I was out celebrating my birthday, and it was one of [my] 30s-birthdays,' Rae recalls. 'We were going to dinner, and we didn't feel like going to a club — because, you know, 30s. We just wanted to go to a lounge that played good music, that had Black people, where we could just chill and have a great night.'Her efforts were futile: 'We went to like three different places, and it just wasn't a thing,' she says. 'And it made me so mad that we were just traveling all over L.A. trying to find the spot. So I hit my business manager up the next week like, 'I want to start a lounge in my neighborhood.' I had been working with the Hilltop guys probably for a year. So we tried to find a location and they were like, 'Do we want a restaurant too? Like, what if we could just elevate and have a fine-dining experience?''Rae knew they could pull it off and when she learned Relan and Hagos already had a locale in mind, everything came together. The 5,000-square-foot space on Slauson had the perfect layout to create the atmospheric hot spot she wanted — where the trio aspired to evoke the heyday of Black entertainment and nightlife.
'In addition to growing up here, all of us — Issa, Yonnie and I — currently live in this community,' says Relan. 'We always wanted a space we could go to in our own backyard, [with] quality food, great cocktails and a curated musical experience. We knew we weren't alone. The idea for Somerville was inspired by historic South L.A. venues like the Dunbar Hotel, which was known as a space that pioneered the West Coast Jazz scene and the cultural heyday of South-Central Los Angeles in the middle of the 20th century.' The cozy, mahogany space — named after the Dunbar Hotel's original name, the Hotel Somerville — has just the right ambiance, with velvet booths and a small stage featuring the grand piano that's used for nightly live jazz and R&B sets. Chef Geter Atienza (Broken Spanish, Fig and GVO's Lost cocktail bar) created the comfort-leaning menu of American classics, from which Rae has many favorites.'Oh my God, the duck confit is phenomenal,' she says. 'I love the chicken caviar sliders. The Brussels sprouts are outstanding. I love the mashed potatoes — even though I don't typically eat mashed potatoes when I'm out — the gravy and the way that that dish is constructed, I've never seen them like that.'
As for the vibe? 'When you walk in, you're kind of like, 'Where am I?'' Rae says. 'You hear the jazz band playing and you're just automatically transported to this particular time period. And it promotes a social atmosphere.' Rae's enthusiasm has always been infectious — in her business pursuits as well as her acting/writing/producing projects — and she's growing on all fronts. She famously played the president in last year's Barbie and shares that she's got many projects ahead — including a cameo in Black Mirror and movies with her production company Hoorae Media, like the recent Jan. 2025 buddy film One of Them Days she produced, starring Keke Palmer and SZA.'Issa has always been intentional with her platform,' says Hagos. 'She always put on for the city of L.A. in a way most of Hollywood historically ignored. The reason her fans and this community love her so much is the authenticity she brings and her desire to consistently amplify voices that have historically been overlooked.' He adds: 'It's aspirational across the board.'4437 W. Slauson Ave., Windsor Hills, somervilleslauson.com

Watch: Sydney Sweeney says 'Cassie is crazy' in 'Euphoria' Season 3
June 6 (UPI) -- Actress Sydney Sweeney is teasing Season 3 of Euphoria. She portrays Cassie in the HBO series, which premiered in 2019. She talked about filming the upcoming third season on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon Thursday. "Cassie is crazy," she said. "Oh, she's even worse. She's even worse." Fallon then showed an image of the star in an apparent wedding dress, but Sweeney said she could not provide additional details about whether or not her character will tie the knot. Zendaya, Maude Apatow, Eric Dane, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Storm Reid, Hunter Schafer and Dominic Fike starred in Season 2. The actress, 27, also stars in the upcoming Apple TV+ thriller Echo Valley opposite Julianne Moore. "You know, when I first read the script, I was completely blown away by how Brad [Ingelsby], the writer, just wove in all of these crazy turns that I didn't even expect, and usually, I'm pretty good at figuring it out, and I did not see this coming," Sweeney told Fallon. "Claire, my character, shows up at her mom's doorstep, played by Julianne Moore, covered in blood," she added, describing the film. "And what follows is a endless amount of twists and turns that kind of show how much and how far a mother would go for her daughter." Domhnall Gleeson and Kyle MacLachlan also star in the film, which arrives on the streamer June 13. On Wednesday, Sweeney attended the New York premiere of Echo Valley. She wore a strapless, red corseted dress.

Harry Potter actor talks about shooting DC superhero show in Savannah
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Actor Freddie Stroma's latest role as the unhinged superhero Vigilante in HBO's Peacemaker may not get him recognized on the street much. That's because his costume covers his face for much of his screentime. But once the mask comes off, you may remember him as Cormac McLaggen in the Harry Potter movies or Luke in Pitch Perfect. Stroma was in town for Epic Cons: Savannah Friday to meet and greet fans. But it wasn't his first visit to the Hostess City. Back in November, the cast of Peacemaker was in the Coastal Empire to shoot part of season 2. Star John Cena was spotted at Leopold's Ice cream and director James Gunn stopped by Odin & Sons Comics and Collectibles. When WSAV News 3 caught up with Stroma at Epic Cons: Savannah, we asked him if he was part of the Savannah production. 'I wasn't filming myself, but I came down anyway. It was amazing. I don't think I can say much, but we had a really good time. I think James [Gunn] is quoted as saying it was the best day of filming he's ever had. I had a great time just checking out Savannah. It's beautiful.' Star of Gilmore Girls reminisces about playing baseball in Savannah And while he spoke to WSAV, Stroma said Gunn shot some of the new Superman movie in Savannah as well. WSAV News 3 asked the Savannah Film Commission to confirm, and they told us that some pickup shots for the movie were done here but it's uncertain whether any of them will be in the final cut. Let WSAV know if you see any Savannah shots when the movie premiers on July 11! Stroma wasn't able to divulge any secrets from season 2 of Peacemaker either. But he did offer this: '[You'll see] a lot of high jinks and a lot of lunacy.' Season 2 of Peacemaker premieres August 21 on HBO. Epic Cons: Savannah continues through Sunday. Get your tickets here. Juneteenth celebration set for June 14
TUPELO — Every year, residents and officials alike gather at Gum Tree Park to celebrate the day the last slaves were notified of their emancipation following the American Civil War. Tupelo will host its annual Juneteenth Tupelo Freedom Celebration June 14 at 4 p.m. at Gum Tree Park, with a separate celebration set from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on June 19, the official day of the federal holiday. Both are free to attend. 'We are very excited. Each year gets better. Each year… more people become aware of not just the festival but also the history,' organizer Jennifer Lawrence said. 'We come from a people that persevered. They went through a lot of oppression but we are here. We are still growing and evolving and we are making strides.' Juneteenth, a portmanteau of June and 19th, marks the annual celebration of the day Union soldiers traveled to Texas to announced that all enslaved Black people in the state were now free, officially ending slavery in the United States. In 2021, former President Joe Biden signed a law naming the day a federal holiday. The Saturday, June 14, festivities will include music performances, multiple speakers, a barbecue cook-off, a kids zone, a dance contest and giveaways. As part of the event, four graduating Black high school seniors or college students each will receive a $300 Conway Goree Scholarship. There will be a mini motorbike raffle as well. Before the June 19 celebration at the park, Lawrence said there will be a march from Gum Tree Museum on main street up to the monument by the old courthouse. Musical performances include Rapper J, Unique JS, Geno Jones' FOCUS, KP & Favor, Genesis United of Starkville, Mighty Gospel Warriors, Lawrence McKenzie, Changed of Amory, Tay Cheesy Brand the Line Dance Queen, J. Green & The Smack Band, The Crossroads Band, EJ Soul, Music Doll TB and more. Before the event proper begins, there will be a parade that starts 3 p.m., starting at the C.C. Augustus Center on North Green Street. Organizers request those attending bring lawn chairs. On June 20, the second annual 'Freedom Face Up' basketball tournament will take place at the Tupelo Police Athletic League, 204 Douglas Street. For more information, contact, Bridgett 'Miss Bam' Shelly at (662) 871-7590 or Lawrence at (662) 816-8403. Lawrence said vendors are still welcome to apply.
