Bihar Cabinet okays major decisions on education, urban development, women's safety
Patna: The Bihar Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, approved 47 key agendas spanning over urban development, education, social welfare, infrastructure, and administrative reforms.
This was the first cabinet meeting in about two weeks, and significant, given the wide-ranging decisions taken.
Under the Urban Development and Civic Infrastructure, Phulwari and Danapur Nagar Parishads have been upgraded to Municipal Corporations.
Major funding has been approved for water supply projects. For Ara, the Cabinet has approved Rs 138 crore, Rs 1,130 crore for Siwan, Rs 76 crore for Sasaram and Rs 497 crore for Aurangabad.
In the Education and Social Welfare Departments, the Cabinet has approved the Buxar-Rohtas Residential School.
Contract-based posts sanctioned for Bihar Jeevika Nidhi Credit Cooperative, nine posts of Krishi Seva (Agriculture Service) created, 935 posts of Assistant Education Development Officer approved and 190 posts in the Social Welfare Department.
The Cabinet has also approved two amendments, including Bihar Polytechnic Education Service Rules, 2025 and Bihar Engineering Education Service Rules, 2025.
The Bihar cabinet has also approved 38 posts of Assistant Land Property Officer and 15 clerk posts for the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC).
The cabinet has also approved the establishment of the District Organising Area Officer Office in every district, and a housing project for senior police officers in Chhajju Bagh, Patna.
It has also approved the dismissal of Jitendra Kumar, Drug Inspector, Patna-5 and Jatashankar Pandey, District Minority Officer, Jamui.
The state cabinet has approved the appointment of Protection Officers for victims of domestic violence.
Land in Naubatpur was granted to the Akshaya Patra Foundation (Bengaluru) to support mid-day meal services in schools.
Besides, the state cabinet has enhanced the pay scale for Central Prohibition Inspectors, Value Added Tax reduction on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) to boost air connectivity and approved fire safety measures under the Building Construction Department.
The decisions come at a time of increasing scrutiny over state governance, especially around law and order and public service delivery.

Maharashtra contractors warn of state-wide protest if Rs 80,000 crore dues not paid
An association of contractors working with Maharashtra government departments has warned of a state-wide protest if the authorities do not release dues of over Rs 80,000 crore by June 10, CNBC-TV18 reported on Thursday. The Maharashtra Contractors Association, which claims to represent about three lakh members in 35 districts of the state, plans to launch a mass awareness campaign and a large-scale protest if the government does not meet the deadline for payments. 'The government has chosen to remain silent, but we will not,' the association's president Milind Bhosale told CNBC-TV18. 'If needed, we will take this agitation to every corner of Maharashtra.' The association has claimed that payments to the tune of Rs 38,000 crore are pending from the state public works department, Rs 6,500 crore from the rural development department, Rs 12,000 crore from the water conservation and water resources department and Rs 4,217 crore from the urban development department. Bhosale said the association has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court against the rural development department, CNBC-TV18 reported. He added that if its demands are not met by June 10, it will file another petition against the public works department. 'We wrote to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis again a couple of days ago,' he told the channel. 'But still, there is no sign of us getting our money.' In February, the contractors had gone on strike for a week to protest the dues. They had alleged that the government had not paid them since July last year, although it was allocating money for initiatives like the Ladki Bahin Scheme for monthly payments to women, The Times of India reported. At the time, Maharashtra Public Works Department Minister Shivendraraje Bhosle said he had asked for Rs 10,000 crore to be released at the earliest for the contractors, according to The Indian Express. Newly built security wall of Kalyan's Durgadi fort collapses after heavy rain
KALYAN: A large portion of the newly built security wall of Kalyan's historic Durgadi Fort collapsed during a sudden heavy rain on Wednesday morning. This wall was recently constructed by the Archaeology and Museum Department of Maharashtra, with an expenditure of around Rs 3.5 crore. Following its collapse, questions were raised about the construction quality executed by the contractor. The local Shiv Sena MLA, Vishwanath Bhoir, was angry after this accident at the historic fort, sanctified by the feet of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and has demanded action against the contractor. It may be recalled that after the dilapidated protection wall of the fort collapsed several times, the state govt initiated the work of repairing the wall of this fort and some other repairs at a total project cost of Rs 13 crore.
