Israel army chief warns of Iranian response
JERUSALEM: Israel's army chief said the military's strikes against Iran on Friday may not achieve 'absolute success' and warned citizens to brace for likely retaliation from the Islamic republic.
'I can't promise absolute success -- the Iranian regime will attempt to attack us in response, the expected toll will be different to what we are used to,' Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir said, while calling the strikes on Iran a 'historic campaign unlike any other'.
Defence Minister Israel Katz said Israel was at a 'critical juncture' in its campaign against Iran.
'This is a defining moment in the history of the State of Israel and in the history of the Jewish people,' Katz said in a statement.
'Iran is more determined than ever to realise its vision of destroying Israel.
'We are now at a critical juncture. If we miss it, we will have no way to stop Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons that will endanger our very own existence,' he said.

Gholamresa Mehrabi and Mehdi Rabani, both leading members of the armed forces' general staff, were killed in Israeli bombings, state radio reported on Saturday (June 14). Mehrabi worked as deputy head of the intelligence department in the general staff, while Rabani was deputy chief of operations. Israel carried out a large-scale surprise attack early on Friday which targeted the country's nuclear sites, military leaders and top scientists. In response, Iran has launched waves of ballistic missiles and drone attacks. Both sides have reported casualties, and despite growing international pressure for de-escalation, neither appears willing to step back from the conflict. Meanwhile, one of Tehran's two airports was targeted in overnight Israeli strikes, Iran's state-run news agency IRNA reported on Saturday. It said explosions hit the military section of Mehrabad Airport, damaging a hangar used for fighter jets. Air traffic at the airport remains suspended. IRNA refuted earlier reports the airport's runways had been struck. Mehrabad, located in central Tehran, primarily handles domestic flights and serves as the base for the government's air fleet. The city's international airport is located about 40 kilometres south of the capital. Elsewhere, several Iranian cities came under heavy shelling overnight. In central Tehran, residents reported hours of explosions and sustained anti-aircraft fire.
