University of Galway leads Europe-wide research on survival tactics of wild honey bees

Once thought to be extinct in the wild, recent independent research has revealed that free-living honey bees exist in some parts of Europe, including Ireland, although much is still unknown about their ability to survive in the wild.
The project, entitled FREE-B, seeks to tackle the knowledge gap by investigating the various factors that bolster survival of these colonies such as their environment, biology and behaviour.
As part of the project, researchers from Ireland, France, Poland, Portugal and Sweden will collaborate to explore the survival tactics of free-living honeybees.
Teams from the five European countries will search for nest sites in collaboration with citizen scientists and the international coalition Honey Bee Watch, with a special focus on forested and remote areas.
In addition to gathering information about the colonies, such as location, nest type, and density, they will also conduct regular monitoring of nests to track survival rates while analysing adaptation and diversity within various environments across the studied areas.
Professor Grace McCormack of the School of Natural Sciences at University of Galway believes the outlook looks promising, saying: 'We have been monitoring free-living honey bee colonies across the island of Ireland since 2015 and have found excellent overwintering survival in this group.
'There is a high proportion of pure native Irish honey bee in the wild population and our research so far suggests that they do not have any higher levels of pests or diseases than managed colonies. Being well adapted to local conditions they may hold key secrets that could improve apiculture in Ireland.
'Indeed, many beekeepers already rely on wild colonies to bolster their beekeeping, particularly beekeepers who no longer use chemicals to treat for the parasitic varroa mite.
'We look forward to extending our research via FREE-B to investigate broader patterns of survival in this key group across different latitudes and climates, to diving deeper to understand what goes on in a wild nest throughout the season, and to sharing exciting research outputs with beekeepers.'

Loop Head at forefront of agricultural sustainability research

Local community development group, Loop Head Together CLG, which is based in the Loop Head peninsula, Co. Clare, was recently awarded €1.75 million to conduct a soil carbon enhancement project aimed at determining the feasibility of restoring soil health in coastal farming regions of Ireland. The funding forms part of an overall investment of €17.8 m in eleven projects under the European Innovation Partnership (EIP), which forms part of the Common Agricultural Policy strategic plan. The announcement coincides with the current roll-out of Loop Head's involvement in Ireland mid-west's Living Lab, a European-funded project called Soilcrates. Loop Head The new project firmly places Loop Head at the forefront of this research around sustainability in agriculture, according to Margaret Cotter, chairperson of Loop Head Together CLG. The group – in collaboration with Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) through research fellow Dr Lena Madden, and assisted by consultants Laura Foley MSc and Michelle Cooney – submitted an EIP proposal to roll out a research project on the Loop Head peninsula, The project is dedicated to soil carbon enhancement, reducing nutrient run-offs and the need for chemical fertilisers, and exploring the potential for circular bio-economy solutions in agriculture. The project is co-funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) and the EU. DAFM cited not only its support of the project as an extension of the department's overall mission to improve soil health, but also pointed out that the project is highly relevant and aligns with the department's priorities around promoting the circular and bio economy. According to Loop Head Together CLG, the most important part of this project is that it will be carried out in conjunction with farmers on the ground with the aim of improving not just the soil but also the long-term viability and sustainability of farming and agriculture generally, With soil management and soil health literally being the foundation of environmental sustainability, these learnings have the potential to have very positive impacts on both the environment and agriculture across the country, the CLG stated. The proposal will also see support from University College Dublin, Munster Technological University, Premier Green, Kracken Seeds, EIT Climate, Arigna Fuels, the ICOS, and agricultural consultants Damien Coyne Ltd. Minister of State at the DAFM, Timmy Dooley, cited the project as a 'way of exploring and demonstrating best practice across the country in terms of sustainable farming'. He described the economic impact of developing better systems for farmers in a way that does not damage the long-term viability of the farm or the soil. 'Research projects like these puts the farming community at the forefront of such findings, meaning that farming is protected going forward,' Minister Dooley said. Fine Gael Deputy, Joe Cooney commended the community on the Loop Head peninsula. 'I'm delighted to see the Loop Head Together organisation getting acknowledged at department level in this way, for the innovative and strategic approach it has taken in tackling some of the challenges that face coastal farming communities. 'I look forward to engaging with them as they progress the project,' Deputy Cooney said. This project, which is rolling out under the working title of SCEENE (Soil Carbon Enhancement for Excess Nutrient Elimination) is still pending final clarifications and signing of contracts, but it is hoped to move towards implementation in the coming months. Local community Margaret Cotter, chairperson of Loop Head Together CLG, said that the goal with the project as a group 'is to support our local farming community in finding solutions to the challenges presented by climate change'. 'The two principal economic drivers in Loop Head are tourism and agriculture and we are acutely aware as a community of the need to support both to ensure the sustainability of our locality into the future.' Cotter pointed out that the project would not have been possible without Loop Head Together's ongoing collaboration with TUS and in particular Dr. Lena Madden. 'Lena has brought with her the extensive expertise of her colleagues and friends who form the operational group for the project. We are also very grateful to the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine for selecting us in this competitive process.' Specialists call on farmers to monitor for blight in Ireland

Potato growers attending a recent Teagasc farm walk in Co. Meath were told that monitoring for blight in Ireland must become a priority. Recent years have seen multiple mutations taking hold within Europe's blight populations, resulting in the development of resistance to numerous blight fungicide chemistries. Currently, the levels of blight population testing in Ireland is low relative to that taking place in the UK and across mainland Europe. Teagasc plant disease specialist, Dr. Steven Kildea, commented: 'We need real time information on how blight populations are changing in Ireland. And the input of growers is critically important in making this happen.' Monitoring for blight on-farm Potato farmers can make suspected blight samples available to the agriculture and food development authority in one of two ways. One is to physically put impacted leaves into an air-tight plastic bag and send them to Teagasc's Oak Park Crops Research Centre in Co. Carlow. The other option is the use of Fast Technology for Analysis (FTA) cards. These have been given out to growers by Teagasc staff at recent potato events. They allow growers to leave a sample of the blight-causing organism on the card. The cards are then submitted to Oak Park for analysis. According to Dr. Kildea, real-time monitoring of blight populations is the only way that Irish potato growers can hope to keep on top of a disease that still has the potential to create havoc within Ireland's potato sector. Fungicide availability is one issue when it comes to controlling blight. Using the chemicals effectively is the other challenge confronting growers. So, ensuring that sprayers are fit for for purpose when used to apply blight fungicides is critically important. The core objective is to ensure that crops are fully treated every time the sprayer goes into a field of potatoes. Spraying potato crops requires total attention to detail This means ensuring that all of the crops are sprayed with the correct rate of fungicide. Growers should avoid misses, overlaps, double applications, and low application rates. Put another way, growers should only sow what they can spray effectively. Global positioning satellite (GPS) systems can be used to deliver accurate boom overlaps. Where headlands are concerned, accurate sprayer on-offs are vital. In addition, GPS switching needs to be set up correctly. Distance from the boom, solenoid switching speed, and tractor forward speed all impact on this. Corners should be reversed into, and curves in fields can also impact on application rates, especially with wider booms.
