Bublik produces masterclass to beat Medvedev in Halle final

Reuters3 hours ago

June 22 (Reuters) - Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik beat Daniil Medvedev for the first time in his career to claim the Halle title on Sunday, winning 6-3 7-6(4) to continue his resurgence.
Bublik had lost his previous six meetings against Russian Medvedev, winning only one set in the process, but produced a superb exhibition of grass-court tennis to end that streak.
Former world number one Medvedev has now lost his last six Tour-level finals.
So often the showman, Bublik showed his new maturity with a calm display in the final as he continued the form that saw him beat world number one Jannik Sinner in the last 16 this week.
He broke the Medvedev serve in the eighth game of the first set and then held his own with ease to move ahead.
Medvedev had a set point when Bublik served at 4-5 in the second set but could do nothing as his wily opponent feathered a delicate drop shot from behind the baseline.
Third seed Medvedev then led 4-1 in the tiebreaker but the unseeded Bublik stormed back to complete a memorable week.

Watch: Wimbledon warm-up turns ugly as rivals clash

A Wimbledon warm-up event turned ugly as former world No 3 Maria Sakkari told Yulia Putintseva that 'nobody likes her' in a heated row. Sakkari reached the second round after completing a 7-5, 7-6 victory at the Bad Homburg Open in Germany. As the players shook hands, Putintseva was quick to take her hand away, angering Sakkari. Putintseva then mocked Sakkari by pretending to curtsy, which the latter took exception to, saying: 'Respect me like a human being.' Putintseva fired back as she walked back to her chair: 'I was being like a human being. Look at yourself.' Sakkari asked Putintseva to repeat what she said, and the two exchanged more words before Putintseva told Sakkari to 'leave her alone.' Sakkari appeared ready to walk away, saying 'f------ hell' but after hearing another comment from Putintseva, she hit back again, repeatedly telling her: 'Nobody likes you' and adding: 'When you shake hands, look at the other person in the eye.' The match umpire eventually stepped in, saying: 'Ladies, please'. However, Putintseva performed another bow for Sakkari and walked off the court. It represented the latest on-court flashpoint involving Putintseva after she was slammed last year for showing 'disrespect' to a ball girl at the US Open. With Putintseva a set and 4-2 down to Jasmine Paolini, the girl attempted to throw balls towards the Russia-born player from Kazakhstan before she took serve. But the player did not attempt to catch or pick up the ball; instead glaring at the girl with her arms down by her side. Three-time grand slam doubles champion Rennae Stubbs wrote at the time: 'The disrespect and obnoxious behaviour here is unbelievable and typical from her.' Putintseva later apologised, claiming her behaviour was because she was 'p----- off at myself for not winning the game.'

‘Nobody likes you' – Fiery moment tennis stars clash on court after player's sarcastic gesture

TWO rival tennis players clashed in a fiery row following one star's sarcastic gesture. And one even told her foe: "Nobody likes you." 7 7 7 Maria Sakkari and Yulia Putintseva faced off in the first round of the Bad Homburg Open in Germany on Sunday. Former world No3 Sakkari, 29, came through a tight encounter, winning 7-5 7-6. But there was none of the usual respect and warmth at the handshake at the net following match point. They did clasp hands but there was clearly some underlying tension. And when Putintseva, 30, did not give eye contact as she extended her hand out, Sakkari took exception. The Greek ace made a comment as her defeated opponent walked towards the umpire. And that led to a spectacular bust-up, with Kazakhstani Putintseva sarcastically curtsying for the winner. Both player shook hands with the chair umpire whilst their war of words continued. Sakkari walked over to Putintseva's chair and made her feelings clear about the petulant behaviour and Putintseva snapped back. The courtside microphones appeared to pick up the world No86 telling Putintseva to "act like a human being". Putintseva then reportedly told Sakkari to "go f*** herself" as the umpire tries to calm things down, chipping in: "Ladies, please." But her rival's comment lit the fuse for Sakkari who confronted Putintseva again and told her: "Nobody likes you." World No27 Putintseva then picked up her racquet bag and towels before bowing in front of Sakkari as the feud escalated. Quizzed about the drama in her on-court interview, Sakkari joked: "I don't think she's going to invite me for dinner for the rest of our lives. "But I don't care to be honest. "I have very good friends." And the incident sparked plenty of talk among tennis fans on social media - especially as Putintseva has been at the centre of controversy in the past. She was the female player at the centre of a scandal for her bizarre tantrum towards a ball girl at the US Open in 2024. One fan wrote: "Sakarri not putting up with Putintseva's antics and says that's why nobody likes you. You don't mess with Maria Sakkari!" Another said: "The most annoying and unlikable player on the WTA Tour. It's shameful that a female would behave the way she does." A third added: "That was so unnecessary from Maria. That's not a national news that Yulia's handshakes (especially after losing) are usually cold. If she wants to behave like that just leave her alone." And a final user commented: "Nothing wrong with a bit of passion. We don't want robots. Wouldn't want this at every match obviously." 7 7
