1MDB trial: Roger Ng testifies on Jho Low's role
PUTRAJAYA: Former Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng Chong Wa told the High Court here today that he knew fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho or Jho Low, during the establishment of the Terengganu Investment Authority (TIA) in 2009, which was later renamed 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
Ng, 53, who was convicted in New York in 2013 for aiding in the embezzlement of 1MDB funds and sentenced to 10 years in prison, said this when queried by Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's lead counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah at the trial of the former premier involving the alleged misappropriation of RM2.3 billion from 1MDB.
'There were rumours that the Terengganu government wanted to set up a sovereign wealth fund. This was back in 2009, when I was working in the investment banking division of Goldman Sachs,' said Ng.
Muhammad Shafee: Would it be correct to say that Jho Low was the one who approached you in order to connect with Goldman Sachs?
Ng: As for the client onboarding process at Goldman Sachs, my recollection is that we typically engage with potential clients. I would say we were always on the lookout for potential clients. I can't recall who approached whom first, but in general, it's a mutual process,' replied Ng.
Ng who is testifying as the 25th defence witness also told the court that his former superior, Tim Leissner, had been charged and pleaded guilty in connection with 1MDB-related transactions. However, Jho Low was charged in absentia.
Muhammad Shafee: Were you or was anyone among you, charged with conspiring with Datuk Seri Najib in the case? Ng responded: 'I don't believe so.'
On Oct 30 last year, Justice Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah ruled that the prosecution had established a prima facie case, ordering Najib to enter his defence.
Najib, 71, is facing a total of 25 charges, including four counts of abusing his position to accept RM2.3 billion in bribes from 1MDB funds and 21 charges of money laundering involving the same amount.
The hearing continues.

KOTA KINABALU (June 7): The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) Sabah has called for an expedited re-election process to appoint new officers and restore effective leadership within the organization. Its chairman, Mohd Airy Arin, emphasized the urgent need for a general council meeting to ratify the election process, enabling MTUC to resume its vital role in representing Malaysian workers. MTUC is currently overseen by a special joint committee (JBK), appointed by the High Court on February 21, with a specific mandate to conduct leadership re-elections within 90 days — originally ending on May 22 and later extended until August. Mohd Airy noted that the JBK had issued a statement protesting the government's refusal to recognize MTUC delegates for participation in the International Labour Organization Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland. He recalled that the High Court's consent order on February 21 required the JBK to hold a Special Delegates Conference (SDC) to elect new leadership. However, the JBK has so far failed to meet this requirement. 'To date, there are still no officers capable of fulfilling the duties of MTUC,' he said in a statement. Highlighting the significance of the ILC as a tripartite platform involving governments, employers and workers, Mohd Airy stressed that the JBK lacks the mandate to nominate representatives on behalf of MTUC. 'Therefore, MTUC Sabah is urging the JBK to concentrate solely on conducting the re-election process and to convene a general council meeting immediately to formalize and ratify the process,' he added.

Surge in foreign tourists visiting S'gor in lead-up to VSY 2025

SELANGOR is experiencing a shift in its tourism landscape as international visitors begin to form a larger part of the state's tourist arrivals. According to state local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim, the ratio of international to domestic tourists was previously 30:70. 'But by 2024, we successfully broke that pattern. 'Now, international tourists make up a larger share of visitors. 'This a positive sign for Selangor's growing global appeal,' he said. Ng said that while the momentum was encouraging, Sekinchan faced one major hurdle – the lack of four-star hotels for the rising number of higher-spending tourists. He was speaking to reporters at Sekinchan Padi Field Festival 2025 in the Sabak Bernam district. The state government had aimed to draw some 13,000 visitors to the two-day event. Held at Terminal Sekinchan, the festival was the first of its kind in Malaysia and had been held in support of Visit Selangor Year (VSY) 2025. 'This festival was created to let visitors enjoy the beauty of agro-tourism in northern Selangor, a region that produces the most rice in Malaysia and is rich in natural beauty that you can't find in modern cities,' said Ng. Among first day highlights were electric tram and rickshaw tours through padi fields, a food festival, traditional kite (wau kapal) demonstrations, a mini kite decoration competition and a live performance by Malaysian singer-songwriter Aizat Amdan. The second day offered even more attractions, which included a padi field run, free health screenings and environmental volunteer activities. The festival was part of the VSY2025 campaign that aimed to draw 8 million visitors and generate RM11.7bil in tourism- related transactions. To support these goals, the Selangor Budget 2025 has allocated RM8mil for VSY2025 preparations. These include programming and upgrading tourism facilities across all nine districts. In the works are over 100 programmes and initiatives covering educational tourism, sports, food and beverage, arts, culture and heritage. Also present during the festival press conference were Menteri Besar Incorporated chief executive officer Saipolyazan M. Yusop and Tourism Selangor chief executive officer Chua Yee Ling.

Appeals court to hear Anwar's interim stay to suspend trial on Tuesday

(Bernama pic) PUTRAJAYA : The Court of Appeal will hear Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's application for an interim stay of the trial of a civil suit filed by a former research assistant on Tuesday, pending the outcome of an appeal. Lawyer K Rajasegaran, who appeared for Anwar, said the date was fixed following case management before a court deputy registrar this afternoon. Rajasegaran said the court also fixed July 21 to hear a permanent stay application of the trial until the outcome of Anwar's appeal to set aside the High Court's refusal to refer eight legal questions arising from the suit. Anwar had wanted the Federal Court to determine whether a sitting prime minister could be given protection from 'frivolous and politically motivated' suits while holding office. In the stay application filed yesterday by Messrs Zain Megat & Murad, the solicitors said there existed special circumstances to suspend the assault suit scheduled to begin in the High Court on June 16. They said the appeal to refer the legal questions to the Federal Court would be nugatory if the trial proceeded. 'The adjournment in the High Court is of utmost importance and is necessary to preserve the principles of justice, equality and constitutional integrity,' they said. They said the postponement would allow for complex and high-impact constitutional questions to be properly determined and interpreted. On Wednesday, Justice Roz Mawar Rozain dismissed Anwar's reference application, when it ruled that all eight questions posed failed to cross the threshold set out in Section 84 of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964. She said none of the articles cited in the Federal Constitution, as argued by Anwar's lawyers, gave rise to any real, substantial and justiciable questions of law that require a determination by the apex court. Roz Mawar had ordered for the trial of Yusoff Rawther's suit to begin at 9am on June 16 as scheduled. The prime minister wanted the apex court to rule whether Articles 5(1), 8(1), 39, 40 and 43 of the Federal Constitution grant him qualified immunity from a suit filed by Yusoff four years ago. The suit relates to events which allegedly took place before Anwar took office on Nov 24, 2022. Yusoff, a grandson of the late Penang consumer advocate SM Mohamed Idris, claims he was assaulted at Anwar's home in Segambut in October 2018. He is seeking general, special, aggravated and exemplary damages, as well as interest, costs and other relief deemed fit by the court. Anwar denies the claim and has filed a countersuit.
