Sassi strike boosts Al-Gharafa's Asian Champions League prospects
Feb 4 (Reuters) - Qatar's Al-Gharafa secured a 1-0 victory over Pakhtakor in Doha on Tuesday to edge closer to a place in the knockout rounds of the Asian Champions League Elite as former champions Al-Hilal thrashed Persepolis 4-1 in Riyadh.
Ferjani Sassi scored six minutes before halftime to earn Al-Gharafa a win that takes Pedro Martins' side up to seventh in the 12-team standings with one round remaining.
The top eight in both west and east Asia qualify for the round of 16.
Persepolis' hopes, meanwhile, suffered a blow as their heavy defeat to the current Saudi Pro League champions saw them drop out of the qualification berths.
Ismail Kartal's side now sit in ninth, behind compatriots Esteghlal on goal difference ahead of their meeting with Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr in Tehran on Feb. 17.
Malcom opened the scoring for Al-Hilal, who have already secured their place in the next round, with a solo effort 10 minutes into the game at the Kingdom Arena.
The former Barcelona winger picked up possession inside his own half and, with the Persepolis defence backing off, Malcom drove deep into the visitors' territory before sidestepping a pair of defenders and scoring via the inside of the post.
Joao Cancelo added the second 15 minutes later when he was granted the space to smash a low right-foot drive into the bottom corner after a weak attempted save by Alexis Guendouz.
Salem Al-Dawsari rounded Guendouz to score from a tight angle seven minutes before halftime to net Al-Hilal's third and, in injury time, the captain struck from distance to claim the fourth. Giorgi Gvelesiani scored a late penalty for Persepolis.
The win kept Al-Hilal in first place in the standings, ahead of compatriots Al-Ahli and Al-Nassr with Qatar's Al-Sadd in fourth and Al-Wasl of the United Arab Emirates in fifth. All five have already qualified for March's last 16.

Alejandro Garnacho offered surprise Manchester United transfer escape route
Alejandro Garnacho faces little prospect of a future with Manchester United following his explosive fallout with Ruben Amorim and a switch to Saudi Arabia could potentially be on the cards Manchester United misfit Alejandro Garnacho could be offered an escape route from Old Trafford by Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr. The Argentine is being discussed as an alternative target to Liverpool winger Luis Diaz after the Premier League champions made it clear that the Colombian is still part of Arne Slot 's plans when they were sounded out by Barcelona about their intentions for the 28-year-old. Al-Nassr have told former Kop favourite Sadio Mane that he can leave the club this summer - and want a top-class replacement. With Diaz now appearing set to stay at Anfield, the Saudis are now exploring the possibility of offering Garnacho the chance to link up again with his boyhood hero Cristiano Ronaldo. The Reds have also had interest from Saudi about Jadon Sancho after Chelsea sent the former England winger back to Manchester following his season-long loan at Stamford Bridge. And with United boss Ruben Amorim looking to clear the decks for a summer rebuild, Inter Milan have made contact with United about the possibility of taking misfiring £72million striker Rasmus Hojlund back to Italy. The beaten Champions League finalists want to take the 20-year-old former Atlalanta forward on-loan next season but are willing to agree to a £38million obligation-to-buy next year. That would save on Hojlund's £90,000-a-week wages. After telling Amorim that his budget for new players will be beefed up by cash generated from sales, there is also another potential money-maker in the pipeline. Former boss Erik ten Hag remains a big admirer of Antony and is weighing up whether to take the £80million Brazilian winger with him to Bayer Leverkusen after his successful loan spell with Real Betis. Betis don't have the £35million it will cost to keep Antony permanently, while Leverkusen will bank in excess of £110million for Florian Wirtz once they have settled on a fee with Liverpool. But it's Garnacho who is likely to give United their biggest pay-day. The Old Trafford club rejected a £40million bid from Napoli in January. But Amorim told the Madrid-born Argentina international to find a new club following a row in the aftermath of the Europa League Final defeat by Tottenham last month. Handing United their asking price will not be a problem for Al-Nassr - and the prospect of playing alongside Ronaldo would be a huge draw for Garnacho. Who should Man United sign this summer? Share your thoughts in the comments below Al-Nassr are currently in talks with Ronaldo about extending a contract that expires at the end of the month - and senior officials from the Saudi government have now entered the negotiations in a bid to keep the country's £3.2million-a-week poster boy in the country. They want the 40-year-old Portuguese's future signed and sealed before cranking up their summer recruitment drive. Garnacho grew up idolising Ronaldo - and even risked the wrath of Argentine legend Lionel Messi when he first broke into his country's senior squad as a teenager by name-checking the Portuguese as football's greatest-ever player. United have already started splashing the cash with the £62.5million capture of Matheus Cunha from Wolves and will have to get close to that fee if they are to prise Bryan Mbeumo away from Brentford. The Reds missed out on a £100million pay-day when captain Bruno Fernandes turned down a £700,000-a-week contract with Al Hilal last week. Getting maximum value from the sale of Garnacho and others would enable them to pursue Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres. Three Premier League clubs want to sign Alejandro Garnacho as Man Utd make final
Manchester United are ready to sell Alejandro Garnacho this summer amid interest from three Premier League clubs. The Argentina international's season ended in controversial circumstances following his outspoken reaction to being left out of the starting XI for the Europa League final defeat against Tottenham. Garnacho was subsequently excluded from the matchday squad on the final day of the Premier League campaign, but did feature on the club's post season tour of Asia. Despite yet another display of petulance, Ruben Amorim maintained he saw a future for the winger at Old Trafford. Little more than a week on since that public declaration, however, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that it has been agreed there will be a clean break between player and club this summer. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. Erik ten Hag, newly installed as Bayer Leverkusen's manager, is credited with an interest in a player who thrived under his tutelage at United. The potential fee and wages, however, would represent a major stumbling block and, at this stage, it appears that Garnacho could well remain in England. A trio of Premier League clubs have expressed an interest in a player whose future will be resolved in the coming weeks. Chelsea looked at signing the 20-year-old in January and are in the market for attacking reinforcements, especially now they have reneged on their plan to turn Jadon Sancho's loan move from United into a permanent deal. The Red Devils, meanwhile, have already started their summer recruitment drive by agreeing a deal to sign Wolves' Matteus Cunha, and are hopeful of agreeing a fee with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo. United were also boosted this week by Bruno Fernandes turning down a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia. The 30-year-old Portugal international has been the subject of speculation linking him with a £100million switch to Al Hilal, with the Saudi Pro League side reportedly prepared to pay him £700,000 per week. Former United and England defender Neville told Sky Sports News: 'It's significant. 'I think that there was an element of this situation that meant United getting that level of money, for someone of Bruno's age, obviously, you couldn't say that it would have been a bad deal. 'But, on the other hand, Manchester United's star player – only player at times – for the last four, five, six years, has been Bruno Fernandes. He's so important. 'The fact that he wants to stay, the fact that he wants to go through this and come out the other side, because it would have been easy for him at the end of this season to say, 'Look, I'm done here', will endear him towards Manchester United fans even more. 'To turn that money down at a point where Manchester United are at their lowest ebb and say, 'No, I want to fight through this, I want to see it through the other side, I want to come out and achieve things,' I think it says a lot about him as a person, as a character. 'The club needs people who are going to run through a brick wall for them.' Cristiano Ronaldo snubs transfer offers as rivals fail with Club World Cup plan
Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that he will not be at the Club World Cup, despite comments from FIFA president Gianni Infantino last month suggesting he would be Crstiano Ronaldo says he will not play at the Club World Cup after rejecting offers from teams involved in the tournament. Ronaldo is out of contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr this month and it remains to be seen what the future holds for the 40-year-old. FIFA president Gianni Infantino, the architect behind the revamped Club World Cup, suggested last month that Ronaldo could still play despite Al-Nassr failing to qualify. Speaking to American streamer IShowSpeed, Infantino said: "Ronaldo might play for one of the teams as well at the Club World Cup. "There are discussions. Yeah, Cristiano Ronaldo might play in the Club World Cup, yeah. There are discussions with some clubs, so if any club is watching and is interested in hiring Ronaldo for the Club World Cup…who knows, who knows." However, despite approaches from clubs, Ronaldo has rejected the chance to feature at the tournament. "I will not be at the Club World Cup," he said. "Some teams reached out to me. Some made sense and others did not, but you can't try and do everything. You can't catch every ball." Fluminense president Mario Bittencourt recently revealed that he had approached Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes, about playing for the Brazilian club for the tournament. Bittencourt said: "I have a relationship with Jorge. "Not a very close one but, if I call him, he answers. I asked him if there was any chance of Cristiano playing in the Club World Cup. He was very clear in telling me that he's not interested in playing in Brazil for now." After Al-Nassr's final league game of the season, Ronaldo prompted plenty of speculation about his future as he wrote on social media: "This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all." However, reports have claimed that Al-Nassr believe Ronaldo will sign a new deal and remain in Saudi Arabia. The former Manchester United star is currently away on international duty with Portugal and has stated that a decision about his future is "almost final". Ronaldo scored the winner as Portugal beat Germany 2-1 in their Nations League semi-final clash on Wednesday and they will now meet Spain in the final on Sunday. Speaking ahead of the final, Portugal boss Roberto Martinez hailed Ronaldo's influence on the team. "Cristiano is a player who is playing in his fourth final for the national team," Martinez said. "He's incredible, an example. I love his hunger. He's a player who has won everything and the next day he's starting from scratch. "For Rodrigo Mora, Quenda, Joao Neves to arrive in the locker room and be able to work with Cristiano is a gift. I hope tomorrow is a memorable day in our careers. I think the team's work is what happens in the locker room. "We have to help the players enjoy the game, make a difference and win. In two and a half years, our work in the locker room has been mutual. We all have a total commitment, it's a supportive locker room that likes responsibility."
