Arab Media Summit Opens with Calls to Defend Truth and Reshape Regional Discourse

Hi Dubai4 days ago

The Arab Media Summit 2025 opened in Dubai with a strong message: Arab media must rise to meet the ethical and technological challenges of a rapidly evolving world.
Attended by around 8,000 media professionals, policymakers, and thought leaders, the event reaffirmed its role as the region's premier platform for shaping media strategy and dialogue.
Opening the summit, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar urged Arab media to confront harmful digital content, misleading portrayals of Islam, and the erosion of cultural values. He stressed the need for a unified Arab media strategy that defends truth, supports identity, and protects youth from the risks of unregulated technological change. He also highlighted efforts to introduce a global code of ethics for artificial intelligence.
The Prime Minister of Lebanon called for responsible journalism that resists bias and misinformation, warning that media today no longer just reflects reality but actively shapes it. He emphasised media's vital role in rebuilding public trust, especially in societies facing political and economic instability.
On the summit's second day, Dubai Media Council leadership spotlighted the growing influence of artificial intelligence in journalism. Amid rising concerns over algorithm-driven narratives and fabricated content, speakers called for stronger safeguards, balanced reporting, and renewed trust between the public and the press.
Over three days, the summit continues to serve as a critical venue for advancing cooperation among Arab media institutions, with a shared goal of ensuring the region's stories are told with integrity, accuracy, and purpose.

Israel blocks Arab ministers from occupied West Bank visit

A delegation of Arab foreign ministers has condemned Israel's decision to block their planned visit to the occupied West Bank. The delegation - including ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and Bahrain - was scheduled to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah on Sunday. However, the visit was postponed after Israeli authorities warned late Friday that they would deny the ministers entry, according to the Jordanian foreign ministry. As the occupying power controlling the West Bank's border with Jordan, Israel's approval was required for the delegation to travel. In a joint statement, the ministers denounced the move as a 'violation of Israel's obligations as an occupying power' and said it reflected 'the arrogance of the Israeli government, its disregard for international law, and its ongoing illegitimate policies". New MEE newsletter: Jerusalem Dispatch Sign up to get the latest insights and analysis on Israel-Palestine, alongside Turkey Unpacked and other MEE newsletters The Palestinian ambassador to Saudi Arabia told local media the visit was meant to underscore the importance of the Palestinian cause to Arabs and Muslims. An Israeli official, speaking to the Ynet news outlet, described the planned meeting as a 'provocative' attempt to promote the establishment of a Palestinian state. 'Such a state would undoubtedly become a terrorist state in the heart of the land of Israel,' the official claimed. 'Israel will not cooperate with efforts that threaten its security.' Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, who was set to lead the delegation, would have been the highest-ranking Saudi official to visit the occupied West Bank in nearly 60 years. The incident comes as Israel faces mounting international pressure to support a two-state solution, backed by the United Nations and several European governments. In June, Saudi Arabia and France are set to co-chair an international conference in New York to discuss the future of Palestinian statehood.

Saudi top diplomat to make rare trip to occupied West Bank

Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan will visit the occupied West Bank this weekend, making him the highest ranking Saudi official to visit in almost 60 years, the Palestinian Authority (PA) revealed on Friday. Bin Farhan will lead a ministerial delegation comprised of his counterparts in Jordan, Egypt, and other Arab nations, the Palestinian ambassador to Saudi Arabia told local media, adding that the trip is intended to convey the centrality of the Palestinian cause to Arabs and Muslims. The move appears similar to the trip bin Farhan organised to Washington in the early months of Israel's war on Gaza, in a bid to showcase a united Arab front in support of a ceasefire. It also appears to be an attempt at lending credibility to the PA as an alternative to Hamas in Gaza, despite the PA's plummeting popularity among Palestinians. The trip is rare and unusual, given that the last time a Saudi official visited Ramallah, he had been appointed a non-resident ambassador to Palestine. New MEE newsletter: Jerusalem Dispatch Sign up to get the latest insights and analysis on Israel-Palestine, alongside Turkey Unpacked and other MEE newsletters Nayef al-Sudairi arrived just weeks before the 7 October 2023 Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel, and before him, King Faisal had visited in 1966. Those attacks were intended to and indeed derailed Saudi-Israeli normalisation talks, Hamas officials revealed over the course of the war. With the kingdom being the de facto leader of the Arab world, it can set an agenda with the kind of influence few of its neighbours possess - and normalising with Israel would have likely dashed ambitions for Palestinian statehood. Since 2023, Saudi Arabia has made it clear that normalisation would only be pursued with a clear pathway to a Palestinian state. Earlier this year, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman called Israel's now 19-month-long war on Gaza a "genocide", echoing assessments by the United Nations and countless rights organisations, among other leading historians and experts. More than 54,000 Palestinians have been killed so far, with some experts believing the figure to be a significant undercount. Next month, a meeting in New York co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France is expected to outline the necessity of establishing a Palestinian state, and rebuild support for the concept of the two-state solution, a plan outlined in the 1993 Oslo Accords. Several European nations have recently recognised the state of Palestine, including Ireland, Spain, and Norway.
