Female journalists urge media houses to remove content featuring minor

The Hindu5 hours ago

Women in media under the banner of 'Collective of Women Journalists' have come together to condemn the media coverage of a journalist and writer's death by suicide, and urged all the channels to take down the content featuring her daughter who is a minor.
Addressing a press conference here on Monday, senior journalists from various media said it goes against the law and ethics to reveal the identity of the minor, and if anyone chooses to seek legal recourse, editors and all the staff will be in the dock.
Women's activist and functionary of 'Bhumika Collective' Satyavathi Kondaveeti said she had already lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crime unit, and the Child Welfare Committee, about the reportage of various media.
She said as per the The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, identity of minor children, their names, and their parents' names should not be revealed. However, in the present case, the girl's name, face and even the school she goes to is public information, because media channels did not observe discretion.
Raising serious concerns with the coverage, another journalist V. Krishna Jyothi cited guidelines issued by Press Council of India, to say suicide should not be considered a 'crime' anymore, and crime reporters should not use the word 'committed'. All journalists, including the copy editor involved in the coverage will be culpable if someone chooses to approach the court about the indiscretion with regard to minor child, she warned. Besides, the letter written by the accused has been openly shared, which goes against the law.
Senior media person C. Vanaja said reporting should be sensitive, ethical and more importantly should abide by the laws of the land. She also advised the police to stop addressing media conferences about the issue, and politicians not to politicise it. Another senior professional, Kavitha Katta urged the media to stop the character assassination of the victim.
Journalist Rajeshwari Kalyanam remarked that lines are getting blurred between voyeurism and journalism, and urged legacy media houses to immediately remove all the visuals featuring the minor child, as they have a greater reach.
Together, around 50 female journalists signed an open letter addressed to the editors and managements of media houses, expressing deep outrage at the irresponsible and insensitive media coverage of the incident. The use of lurid headlines, sensational narratives and thumbnails depicting a minor girl are egregious violations of journalistic ethics and human decency, the letter said.
They demanded immediate removal of images, videos and thumbnails showing the minor, a public apology for the distress caused to the family and journalist community, and a concrete commitment to retrain the editorial teams on ethical reporting, especially on issues involving women and children. If the demands are not met, they warned that all legal, regulatory, and professional avenues will be explored to hold the organisations accountable.

Mumbai Police books 7 from Bihar for fraudulently gaining jobs at Currency Note Press Nashik

The Mumbai Police has booked seven people from Bihar's Nalanda district on Monday, for allegedly fraudulently getting recruited at Currency Note Press Nashik by clearing the qualifying exams with the help of dummies. The accused also allegedly submitted false certificates to get the jobs. Powai police have initiated an investigation into the matter. According to the complaint, the Currency Note Press Nashik conducted recruitment exam in 2022-23 for the posts of junior technician (stamp/control), junior technician (workshop/electrical) and supervisor and filled the vacancies after due process. A few weeks ago, the Currency Note Press received information that a few candidates have fraudulently cleared the exam to get the jobs. An inquiry was initiated and officials scanned the CCTV footage of the examination centre at the ION Digital Zone, in Powai, where the exam was held on March 13, 2022 and March 4, 2023. It was found that seven candidates from Bihar never gave the exams and had sent dummy candidates, who gave exams on their behalf, the complainant officer stated in the FIR. The accused candidates were identified as Raviranjan Kumar, Sandeep Kumar, Shishupal Kumar, Ayushya Raj, Rajeev Singh, Sandeep Kumar and Ashutosh Kumar — all from Nalanda district in Bihar. The probe officers then checked the authenticity of the certificates submitted by the candidates, who got the jobs and were working. It was revealed that the ITI certificates and diploma certificates submitted by them were bogus, the FIR states. By such fraudulent acts, the accused did injustice to the deserving candidates and defrauded Currency Note Press, Nashik, the FIR added. The Currency Note Press filed a complaint with the Upnagar police station in Nashik against the seven accused persons. Nashik police registered a Zero FIR on the complait of Vikramsingh Chaudhary, 30, deputy manager (legal), and transferred the case to Powai police station for further investigation. Police have booked the accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for cheating, forgery, criminal conspiracy, etc., and Maharashtra University Board and other specified examinations (Prevention of Malpractices) Act and are further investigating the matter. No arrest has been made yet, a police officer said. Police are also trying to track the dummy candidates who helped the accused in the exam.

Three years on, absconding accused nabbed in Pocso case in Mumbai

Mumbai: The Vinobha Bhave Nagar Police have arrested a 22-year-old man who had been on the run for three years in connection with the sexual assault of a minor girl. The accused, Naushad Israr Ahmed, had been evading arrest since July 18, 2022, when a case was registered against him under IPC Sections 363 (kidnapping), 376 (rape), 354 (assault on woman), and Sections 4, 8, and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. According to police, Naushad had changed his identity several times and moved across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh, frequently altering his appearance and using false names to mislead investigators. In a calculated attempt to stay off the radar, he had used 65 different SIM cards over three years and kept switching mobile phones. A breakthrough came after technical surveillance and a tip-off from a secret informant revealed that the accused was working as a truck driver for a private logistics company at the Safe Express Courier Godown in Padmala, Vadodara, Gujarat. Based on this lead, police confirmed that Naushad was frequently traveling between Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh, making it harder to trace him. After obtaining necessary approvals, a team led by Police Officer Sonawane traveled to Vadodara, where they laid a trap and apprehended the accused at the courier godown. NIA attaches property of arrested accused in HuT terror conspiracy case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has attached a property of an accused arrested in connection with a Tamil Nadu-based criminal conspiracy allegedly aimed at establishing the Islamic Caliphate in India. The move was aimed at curtailing anti-India activities of the banned Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT) terror outfit, the NIA said in a press release on Monday. The property of Bava Bahrudeen alias Mannai Bava, located at Gandhiji Road in Thanjavur has been attached under Sec. 25 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. The land belonged to Hazarat Sams Manssor Peer Avuliya Dargah Trust Board and was 'sold' without formal registration to the accused Bava Bahrudeen, the NIA said. Bava Bahrudeen, along with co-accused, had been allegedly using the property for HuT's activities since 2015. They were conducting clandestine indoctrination and recruitment activities through secret classes and radicalisation sessions. They had organised Khilafah exhibitions showcasing the military strength of Islamic nations such as Egypt, Iran, Turkey and Pakistan at the property, the NIA alleged. Bava Bahrudeen had been arrested earlier by the NIA in connection with the conspiracy of self-styled office-bearers of HuT to promote the outfit's ideology and enforce the constitution written by its founder, Taqi al-Din al-Nabhani.
