6 Klang Valley highways, 25 main roads to close for Asean Summit

KUALA LUMPUR : Six highways and 25 main roads in the Klang Valley will be closed in stages from Friday until May 28, in conjunction with the Asean Summit.
Bukit Aman traffic investigation and enforcement department director Yusri Hassan Basri said the roads that would be closed included the routes to KLIA, KLCC, Istana Negara and several hotels.
The roads that will be closed are as follows:
Friday to May 26 (7am until all delegates arrive in stages)

Yusri said the closures would be done in phases, with each closure to last 30 minutes to enable convoys of Asean Summit participants and guests to reach their destination on time.
He advised the public not to park their vehicles indiscriminately along the roads involved in the closure to ensure smooth traffic flow.
He added that enforcement action would be taken against such vehicles, including having them towed away.
Yusri also said business vehicles and heavy vehicles are not allowed to enter the city centre from 4.30am today until May 28.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Bermaz Auto Bhd's shares tumbled to its lowest in nearly five years after its net profit for the fourth quarter ended April 30 (Q4 FY2025) crashed 76.5% to RM21.2 million from RM90.2 million a year ago. This was its lowest quarterly profit in three years as revenue dropped 43.6% to RM528.7 million from RM937.5 million. For the full year, net profit fell 55% to RM155.9 million from RM345.6 million, as revenue dropped nearly 30% to RM2.62 billion from RM3.9 billion. Bermaz, which mainly assembles Mazda and Kia vehicles, attributed the steep drop in profit largely to China-made vehicles flooding into the local market. 'The continuous influx of Chinese vehicles had also impacted the sales of other marques in the country,' it said in a bourse filing yesterday. The automotive company's poor results disappointed investors and analysts alike, leading to a plunge in its share price today. The stock fell as much as 11.3% or 11 sen to 82 sen, its lowest level since late 2020. At this price, the company has a market capitalisation of RM962 million. Since the end of 2024, Bermaz has been on a downtrend as rising popularity of Chinese car brands among Malaysians has eroded sales of its Japanese-made Mazda and Korean-made Kia vehicles. Year to date, its shares have slumped 48%, wiping out half of the company's value. Hong Leong Investment Bank downgraded the stock to 'sell', stating competition in Malaysia and the Philippines is expected to intensify with the influx of Chinese manufacturers 'offering feature-rich models at competitive prices'. Bermaz has sought to mitigate the impact of Chinese brands in the domestic market by offering Chinese marques, having secured the distribution rights to Xpeng and Deepal cars, which are mainly electric vehicles. In a note, Apex Securities said sales of XPeng vehicles, while appearing promising, have yet to contribute significantly to offset the slide in Mazda and Kia sales. The research house downgraded Bermaz to 'hold' from 'buy', highlighting the 'intense competition' in the industry and weaker sales across key locally assembled models. The outlook remains murky with Bermaz anticipating its performance to be challenging for the financial year ending April 30, 2026, its filing said. Total vehicle sales in Malaysia for the first four months dropped 5.4% to 248,730 units from 263,050 units in the same period last year, according to Malaysian Automotive Association data.

‘My shoulder is very heavy': Loke backs Motac taking over tour bus oversight, but says Cabinet must decide
SHAH ALAM, June 13 — Transport Minister Anthony Loke today said he has no objections to returning the oversight of tour buses to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac). He said the matter was raised two years ago, and he had already conveyed his support to Motac Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing. 'This is not due to the UPSI (Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris) incident as Motac had raised this matter two years ago," Loke told reporters after visiting Scania Malaysia headquarters here. 'I don't have a problem with this, I've raised this with Tiong, if you want to take up this responsibility and guarantee that these tour buses are safer, I'm more than happy to surrender that portion back to Motac. 'But that is subjected to the Cabinet's decision because there are many implications in terms of staff employment, enforcement, human resources, this has to be decided by the Cabinet,' Loke told reporters after visiting Scania Malaysia headquarters here," he added. He said the decision was not under his ministry's jurisdiction, but instead required action from the Public Service Department (JPA), particularly regarding staffing for enforcement. 'I've said that from the aspect of licensing power and enforcement for tour buses — to return to Motac — my stand is I have no problem," he said. 'The more people there are to shoulder this responsibility, I'm more than happy. Because I don't want to be the only one shouldering all these responsibilities. 'Now my shoulder is very heavy. So if there are more agencies that are willing to help ensure better regulation by all means I have no problem and I fully support it," he added. However, Loke said his condition was that enforcement officers under the Road Transport Department (JPJ) must not be reassigned or reduced. 'Our enforcement officers cannot be reduced — because we ourselves at the Transport Ministry are facing constraints. 'Because when JPA requests for JPJ officers to be placed under Motac, that will make my job harder as our enforcement officers have its constraints." On June 11, Tiong called for Motac to be given back authority over tourism vehicles, citing safety concerns and poor coordination between enforcement agencies. He reportedly said that Motac's original mandate had been diluted over the years, weakening its ability to ensure compliance and safety in the tourism transport sector. The issue was raised following the June 5 Gerik-Jeli crash that killed 15 UPSI students and exposed major regulatory gaps, prompting national debate over tour bus oversight.
