All 9 convicts get life sentences for sexual assaults in Pollachi

Hindustan Times14-05-2025

A Coimbatore court on Tuesday convicted and sentenced nine men to life imprisonment until death in the Pollachi sexual assault case, which had sent shockwaves across Tamil Nadu after incidents of gang rape, filming sexual crimes and extorting multiple survivors came to light in 2019.
The verdict in the case, which had attained political overtones as one of the accused was a political party functionary, saw the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and rival AIADMK hit out at each other over women's safety during their respective rules.
Coimbatore women's court judge R Nandhini Devi, who pronounced the quantum of punishment, ordered an overall compensation of ₹85 lakh to the eight women victims, who testified in the case from Pollachi, a small scenic town about 44 km from Coimbatore.
The nine men were accused of criminal conspiracy, sexual harassment, rape, gang rape, and extortion, in the series of incidents that happened between 2016 and 2018, and came to light a year later.
'They have been convicted on two major offences under sections 376D (gang rape) and 376(2)(n) (repeated rape on the same woman) of the (erstwhile) Indian Penal Code (IPC),' special public prosecutor V Surendra Mohan told reporters after the verdict.
They were given 'life imprisonment till death', as sought by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which probed the matter, Mohan added.
Earlier in the day, the nine accused — N Rishwanth alias Sabarirajan (26), K Thirunavukkarasu (28), N Sathish (30), T Vasanthakumar (25), R Manivannan alias Mani (31), K Arulanantham (34), P Babu alias 'Bike' Babu (27), Haronimus Paul (29), and M Arunkumar (29) — were brought to the court amid tight security from Salem central prison, where they have been lodged since their arrest in 2019. They had appeared via video link during the trial.
A total of 48 witnesses were examined by the prosecution and none of them turned hostile, Mohan said, adding that over 240 documents, 400 electronic evidence such as forensic-validated videos of the assault were presented before the court.
The defence had sought leniency for the convicts on grounds of their young age and aged parents. The court, however, sentenced them to life imprisonment for the remainder of their natural life.
The case came to light after one of the survivors, a 19-year-old college student, lodged a sexual assault complaint with the police in February 2019 against four accused. She had alleged that the accused she had befriended sexually assaulted her inside a car, filmed the act and threatened to leak the video.
During the investigation, it was found to be the modus operandi — the accused luring the victims, mostly college-going young women, sexually assaulting them either in cars or after taking them to secluded areas. The men were also accused of filming some of their acts and using it to blackmail the survivors.
Initially the local Pollachi police investigated the crime. After then Coimbatore superintendent of police (SP) R Pandiarajan disclosed the name of the complainant–which activists believe dissuaded many survivors from filing complaints– the case was first transferred to CB-CID and later to CBI in March 2019.
The case took a political colour after it came to light that one of the accused, Arulanantham, was a functionary of AIADMK, which was in power when the crime happened. The AIADMK was quick to expel Arulanantham from the party after his name surfaced in the crime. The case triggered massive protests by residents seeking strict action against the accused, and it echoed in the legislative assembly as recently as last month.
Chief minister MK Stalin welcomed the verdict and took a veiled swipe at AIADMK general secretary Edappadi Palaniswali, who was the chief minister at the time of the crime.
'Justice has been served for the atrocities committed by the wicked criminals including the AIADMK functionary,' Stalin, who is also the DMK president, said in a post on X. 'Those sirs who tried to protect the guilty in the AIADMK should feel ashamed.'
Palaniswami hit back at the DMK, raking up the sexual assault case of a college student in Chennai's Anna University last year claiming that the lone arrested accused in the case was an alleged DMK supporter.
He also claimed that swift police action, especially in arresting all the criminals, and the prompt decision of his government in handing over the Pollachi case probe to CBI had ensured justice to the victims.
'All offenders in the case were arrested during the previous AIADMK regime. I ordered an impartial CBI probe. The women have received justice today,' he said in a lengthy post on X. 'The AIADMK will expose the DMK in 2026. Then, DMK will hang its head in shame.'
Actor-politician and TVK leader Vijay, the newest entrant in the Tamil Nadu politics, also welcomed the verdict and said it would give solace to the victims, who faced the case with courage and ensured that the criminals were punished.

Thane builder duped of Rs 2.7 crore in loan fraud; police launch probe

THANE: Police have registered a case against a man for allegedly cheating a builder from Maharashtra's Thane district of Rs 2.7 crore after promising a business loan at a lower interest rate, an official said on Sunday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The 68-year-old complainant from Ambernath, who runs a construction business along with his two sons, needed a Rs 25 crore loan. An acquaintance subsequently introduced him to the accused, who hails from Nashik, the official from Shivajinagar police station said. The accused promised to arrange the Rs 25 crore loan at 7 per cent annual interest through his company and signed an agreement with the victim's firm on August 4, 2017, he said. As per the agreement, the victim was to pay a 10 per cent service charge of Rs 2.5 crore. Between August 2017 and January 2019, the victim transferred a total of Rs 2.7 crore over three instalments into the bank accounts linked to the accused's company, the official said. Despite repeated follow-ups, the promised loan was never sanctioned, and the accused kept delaying repayment of the advance, he said. "We registered an FIR on Friday against the accused under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, based on a detailed written complaint from the victim. He claims the accused misrepresented himself as a loan facilitator and siphoned off funds meant for business expansion," the official said. "We are gathering evidence and verifying all the bank transaction details provided by the complainant," the police added.

Northeast Delhi riots: After judge's transfer, where does the ‘larger conspiracy' case stand?

Arguments on charge in the Delhi riots 'larger conspiracy' case will have to begin afresh as the judge who had been hearing the case for the last 18 months has been transferred. Out of the 18 accused arrested in the case, 12 have been in jail for over four years. From October to May 2025, five accused — including former JNU student leader Umar Khalid, former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain, Shifa Ur Rehman, and Safoora Zargar — had completed their arguments on charge. The prosecution also completed its arguments during day-to-day hearings. After the remaining persons finished their arguments, the trial of the case would've begun. Family members and lawyers of the accused called the delay a 'punishment'. Shortly after the riots broke out, which left 53 dead and 700 injured, the Delhi Police Special Cell started investigating the alleged conspiracy behind them. During its investigation, it booked the 18 accused under relevant provisions of the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and IPC. The case of the Special Cell was that the riots were the result of a months-long 'deep-rooted' conspiracy allegedly hatched after the Citizenship Amendment Bill got a nod from the Cabinet in December 2019. Between 2020 and 2023, police filed four supplementary chargesheets. With their final chargesheet in June 2023, they marked the completion of their probe into the case. Their case was primarily built on CCTV footage, WhatsApp chats, and statements of protected witnesses. In October 2023, Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Amitabh Rawat of Karkardooma Court had directed that arguments on the charge be conducted on a day-to-day basis. Two months later, ASJ Rawat was transferred and ASJ Sameer Bajpai replaced him. On September 4 last year, the Special Cell officially told ASJ Bajpai that they had completed their investigation. Following this, the judge ordered that arguments on charge would commence from September 5. On May 30 this year, ASJ Bajpai was transferred following a reshuffle of 135 judges across Delhi. 'With the chargesheet of several thousand pages, more than 700 witnesses, other issues and such transfers, we don't know how long it will take. This is very unfortunate. Our sons and daughters are languishing in jail,' said Umar's father, Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas. 'The problem is that section 43(D) of the UAPA lists extremely stringent bail conditions. The judge has to first make up their mind whether a prima facie case is made out or not. For this, arguments on charge need to be complete. It becomes impossible to get bail otherwise,' said advocate Rajiv Mohan, who represented Husain in court. Along with Mohan, advocate Tara Narula also appeared for Husain. Asif Iqbal Tanha, one of the six accused out on bail, told The Indian Express, 'For the people who are in jail, the delay in trial is very problematic. But even those who are out on bail have various restrictions.' On June 2, ASJ Lalit Kumar, who replaced ASJ Bajpai, heard the case for the first time. The Delhi Police and the accused persons were directed by the judge to furnish their schedule regarding the time frame and manner in which they will address arguments. The court also stated that arguments on charge must be 'expedited'. On June 6, ASJ Kumar asked the prosecution and the defence how long they would take to conclude the arguments. 'I will take 25-27 hours to outline the entire conspiracy… we have submitted a 1,200-page compilation. For the assistance of the honorable Court, I will keep it very concise,' Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad had said. The 18 accused persons in this case are Devangana Kalita, Natasha Narwal, Ishrat Jahan, Faizan Khan, Safoora Zargar, Asif Iqbal Tanha (all six on bail); Tahir Husain, Umar Khalid, Khalid Saifi, Sharjeel Imam, Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, Shifa-Ur-Rehman, Shadab Ahmed, Tasleem Ahmed, Saleem Malik, Mohd Saleem Khan, and Athar Khan (all 12 in jail).
