Pakistan Super League follows Indian Premier League in postponing matches

Leader Live09-05-2025

Tensions in the region have sharply escalated in recent days following Indian missile strikes that killed at least 26 people in disputed Kashmir last weekend, with both countries calling a halt to their prestige cricket tournaments.
As events unfolded this week it became increasingly unlikely that the sport could continue, with overseas stars eager to get away and uncertainty over whether the games could be safely staged.

The PSL had originally moved some of its teams and infrastructure to the United Arab Emirates in a bid to play the final eight matches of the competition on neutral soil but that plan was shelved on Friday evening on advice from the Prime Minister's office.
The IPL, easily the richest T20 league in the world and one of the wealthiest in all of sport, had earlier announced a one-week suspension. Whether they are able to hold to that timeline in the present circumstances, and with international players including a 10-strong English contingent leaving India as a matter of urgency, is in doubt.
There have been claims and counter claims from the capitals of New Delhi and Islamabad and deaths in both countries in a month of worrying aggression. A selection of high-profile India players have made statements honouring their military and there were angry words from the Pakistan Cricket Board as it bowed to pressure and confirmed the indefinite postponement.
A statement read: 'The decision to postpone has been taken pursuant to advice received from the Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif who has kept in view the reckless aggression from India that has escalated to a point where national attention and sentiments are rightly focused on the courageous efforts of the Armed Forces of Pakistan who are vociferously upholding the sovereignty of our beloved Pakistan.
'The PCB and its players stand resolutely in solidarity with the families of the martyrs and our security personnel defending the nation.
'Cricket, while being a unifying force and a source of joy, must take a respectful pause when the country is facing such callous opposition.
'We at the PCB also have sincere regard for the mental well-being of participating players and the sentiments of our foreign players and we respect the concerns of their families who want to see them back home.'
In its own statement, the Board of Control for Cricket in India said: 'While the BCCI reposes full faith in the strength and preparedness of our armed forces, the board considered it prudent to act in the collective interest of all stakeholders. At this critical juncture, the BCCI stands firmly with the nation.'
The Professional Cricketers' Association has been offering logistical assistance and support, keeping players informed with up to date security details and government advice. The England and Wales Cricket Board has also been monitoring official channels.
The process of facilitating the departures of overseas players from India began on Thursday.
I wonder if it's possible to finish the IPL in the UK .. We have all the venues and the Indian players can then stay on for the Test series .. Just a thought ?
— Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) May 9, 2025
Former Ashes-winning captain Michael Vaughan took to X to suggest England could step in and host the remaining IPL fixtures, noting that India are due to play a five-Test series here over the summer.
'I wonder if it's possible to finish the IPL in the UK… We have all the venues and the Indian players can then stay on for the Test series… Just a thought?' he wrote.
It is understood the England and Wales Cricket Board has not ruled out the idea but the logistics in the middle of the domestic season would be an enormous challenge.
Tom Moffat, the chief executive of the World Cricketers' Association, has been leading the global players' union during the current crisis and told the PA news agency: 'It has been concerning to see the situation unfold in India and Pakistan and we hope that the situation de-escalates as soon as possible.
'Cricket is secondary to the health and safety of the people in both countries, including the players competing in the IPL and PSL.
'WCA and our member associations have been in regular contact with impacted players and assisting with advice to help with their individual decisions, supported by our expert security consultants. We are pleased both events have acted on concerns raised.'

Inter Milan make new Rasmus Hojlund plan due to Manchester United's asking price

Inter Milan cannot meet Manchester United's asking price for Rasmus Hojlund but are keen on striking a loan deal for the misfiring striker. The 22-year-old had a really difficult season with the Red Devils last time round, scoring just four goals in 32 Premier League outings. The Dane netted 10 times in 52 appearances across all competitions, with six of those coming on United's run to the Europa League final. In total he has scored 26 times in 95 games since signing from Atalanta for an initial £64m in the summer of 2023. With Manchester United struggling badly for any kind of form under Ruben Amorim, almost none of their players have managed to shine so Hojlund is not alone, but in two seasons in the Premier League he certainly has not convinced that he can be a leading striker in the English top flight. After such a lean run in the Premier League his confidence now appears to be extremely low and a move this summer looks likely, if a deal can be done. Hojlund has a good reputation in Italy after an impressive 2022-23 season with Atlanta, which earned him his move to Old Trafford. Inter Milan are keen on bringing him back to Serie A, with La Gazzetta dello Sport reporting that he is their number one target as they look for a striker to compete with Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez. However, Manchester United have set an asking price of €45m (£38m) for the Denmark international and that is likely to be out of Inter's reach. As a result, the report from Gazzetta suggests the Nerazzurri will look to negotiate a loan deal with an option or obligation to buy next summer. Whether Manchester United will accept the deal is yet to be seen, but they are unlikely to be swamped with offers of £38m or more for the striker, so it may well prove to be the best option. Speaking earlier this month Hojlund said he expected to still be at Old Trafford next season, telling Norwegian outlet Ekstra Bladet: 'I have a contract until 2030, so I expect to play for Manchester United. More Trending 'I'm looking forward to going on a summer vacation, and then I'm fully dedicated to the project that's underway.' Inter may not want to meet Hojlund's asking price this summer, but they are also reportedly bringing in another forward in Parma's Ange-Yoan Bonny. The 21-year-old is set to join for around £17m having worked under Chivu at Parma, but would be seen as less of an immediate first team prospect as Hojlund. The France Under-21 international has already made 117 appearances for Parma, but most of those came in Serie B, with just one season in Serie A under his belt, during which he scored six goals. Ferdinand says Man Utd and Arsenal target should be 'causing nightmare' for move

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand says Viktor Gyokeres should be 'causing a nightmare' at Sporting if he wishes to secure a move to the Premier League this summer. Gyokeres, 27, has established himself as one of the most sought-after attacking players in European football on the back of two outstanding seasons with Sporting, in which he scored 97 goals in 102 appearances. The Portuguese champions have grown increasingly resigned to losing their prized possession amid strong interest from the Premier League, with Arsenal currently leading Manchester United in the race for the prolific forward. However, Gyokeres' path to English football is currently being blocked by Sporting president Frederico Varandas, who is disputing claims made by the Swede's camp. A 'furious' Gyokeres had been under the impression he could leave for a fee of £59million, but Varandas is denying the existence of a supposed gentleman's agreement with the striker. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. 'I'll tell you one thing, I would be in his [Varandas'] office and he wouldn't be able to leave me,' ex-United and England defender Ferdinand told talkSPORT when asked about the latest rumours. 'I'd be in his bed, I'd be in his front room, his kitchen, he wouldn't be able to get me out of his sight. 'I'd be causing him a nightmare to get out if we'd had an agreement. 'I did that when I was at Leeds. I heard that Manchester United were interested in me and I knew had to let me go. 'I went to Peter Ridsdale and said, 'Listen, I know you need to sell me, let's not haggle over a couple of million here and there and let's get a deal done', and I was there for hours waiting and ended up getting it done.' While Ferdinand has been impressed by Gyokeres' extraordinary numbers in Portuguese football, he believes the jury is still out on the Sweden international being able to mix it with the best. According to Ferdinand, United ideally should be scouring the market for a proven No.9 with 'experience'. 'Is he the right guy? Listen, he has some really good attributes. I've not seen enough of him to be totally convinced,' the six-time Premier League winner added. 'The games I have seen him in, in the Champions League against players that match him up physically, I'd love to see a bit more. 'But there's no denying that he knows where the goal is. He's playing in Portugal where he's been banging in and setting up goals left, right and centre the last couple of years. 'I just think for Manchester United, at this moment in time, I would go for experience more than anything.' Gyokeres reassured fans he would 'speak when the time is right' as he took to Instagram amid incessant speculation over his future on Friday. 'There's a lot of talk at the moment, most of it false,' Gyokeres wrote. 'I will speak when the time is right.' Gyokeres' current contract in Lisbon runs through to June 2028. 'He is very happy here,' Sporting manager Rui Borges said when asked for an update on Gyokeres' future after the club successfully defended their Primeira Liga title. 'He is very connected to the game, he wants to score and he is obsessed with it. 'He is the best striker in Europe, as the numbers show. 'He will be attractive, but I believe that if he doesn't leave Sporting, he will remain very committed to the club. He feels very happy here.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Darts boo boys who targeted Luke Littler and Humphries condemned as German has message for his own people

Aussie ace Damon Heta outlines situation as Martin Schindler wants no heckling Savaged Luke Humphries and Luke Littler faced brutal conditions as humble German hero Martin Schinder hit out at home booing of the rattled England pair. The red-hot tournament favourites were sent spinning out of the Darts World Cup by the hosts amid partisan scenes in Frankfurt. ‌ Humphries and Littler were hounded by the home crowds throughout the contest and Schindler and partner Ricardo Pietreczko piled on the agonies with a brilliant showing to send the English pair, who both got an MBE on the eve of the game, out in convincing fashion. ‌ Schindler loved the support, but didn't agree with the heckling as he said: 'Obviously we have to say that we don't approve of the whistling and booing. We have to say it's not getting easier for us because our opponents are getting booed or whistled, we still need to go out there and perform.' Germany now face Australia and Down Under star Damon Heta reckons Littler and Humphries faced a nightmare scenario which he hopes he and partner Simon Whitlock can turn around when they face Shindler and Pietreczko on Sunday afternoon. He said: 'They [England] probably relied on each other thinking: Ah, he'll do the business, ah, he'll do the business. But the conditions weren't great. The crowd was awful. In Germany, it was probably brutal out there for them. They would take it as another learning curve and probably get stronger, unfortunately, for the rest of us. 'Fair play to Germany. They had to still play the good darts, but at the end of the day, we're just worried about us and what we've got to do. It's blocking it out, but at the same time, I think it's trying to use it in your own advantage going: Alright, let's keep them quiet. Let's shut this up. Let's get on top of it. Then that way, when it's quiet and they're getting behind, that's when they start feeling the pinch going: Oh, they're not performing. 'You get tangled up in a hard-out game where it's probably going to the wire. That's when it starts getting a bit nervy, a bit twitchy. They want to perform in their own country, so the pressure's probably more on them to wanting to get something over the line. I'm not sure if Germany's won the World Cup before. No?' Whitlock agrees and added: 'I think the crowd could play a big part again, but anyway, we're pretty seasoned, so just get on with the job. Those guys had two wins under their belt, which I think is a big advantage, playing England. They never played together before and you can sort of tell that it played a big factor, plus with the crowd. We've just played a lot of darts, and I think we'll be fine. If we get on top early and quieten the crowd down a bit, it might be different. Germany got a good start [against England] and they just went with it, so we've got to shut that down a bit.'
