Pakistan a ‘phenomenal partner' in counterterrorism

US Central Command (CENTCOM) chief General Michael Kurilla has called Pakistan a 'phenomenal partner' in counterterrorism efforts. Testifying before the US House Armed Services Committee on Tuesday, Kurilla said Pakistan's military has captured at least five ISIS-Khorasan terrorists using limited intelligence provided by the US. 'Since the beginning of 2024, Pakistan had over 1,000 terrorist attacks in the western area, killing about 700 security personnel and civilians, and 2,500 were wounded – they are in an active counter-terrorism fight right now and they have been a phenomenal partner in the counter-terrorism world,' he said. In March 2025, Pakistan assisted the US in arresting Mohammed Sharifullah, an alleged co-conspirator in the 2021 Kabul airport attack. After the arrest, Pakistani Army chief General Asim Munir reached out to Kurilla and asked him to pass on the information to US President Donald Trump, according to the CENTCOM chief. Pakistan, which was a close ally of the US during the Cold War, has claimed that it was a victim of terrorism in the region stemming from the policies of Western governments during the Soviet-Afghanistan war in the 1980s. In an interview in April with Sky News, Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said his country previously did the West's 'dirty work' by 'training and indoctrinating jihadists.' He called it a mistake and stated that Pakistan now bears the consequences of its previous policies. JUST IN - U.S. Central Command Chief General Michael Kurilla has praised Pakistan as 'a phenomenal counter-terrorism partner' in the fight against terrorism. The U.S. commended Pakistan for its continued support in operations against ISIS. Pakistan, a designated major non-NATO ally, possesses a significant amount of US military equipment, such as F-16 fighter jets. It has, however, reduced its dependence on American weapons, relying more on Beijing over the last decade. During his testimony on Tuesday, Kurilla advocated for strengthening relations with both Pakistan and India, highlighting the importance of cooperation in the region. His comments came a month after a major military escalation between the two South Asian neighbors.

Russia conducts ‘retaliatory strikes' on Ukrainian airfield

Russian forces have conducted overnight strikes on a Ukrainian airfield in the western Rovno Region, the Defense Ministry in Moscow reported on Monday. The strikes are part of Moscow's retaliation for Ukrainian 'terrorist attacks' against Russian air forces, the statement said. Last week, Ukrainian intelligence services claimed to have delivered a significant blow to Russian air power by bombing airfields deep inside the country with short-range first person view drones launched from concealed compartments in freight cars. Moscow has accused Kiev of seriously exaggerating the effect of the operation. The Russian military has framed several of its recent operations as retaliation for the drone plot as well as the deadly derailment of a passenger train which occurred on the same day. Investigators have said forensic evidence unequivocally linked the incident to Kiev's broader efforts to sabotage transport infrastructure and demoralize the Russian public. The latest retaliation strikes outlined on Monday also included the bombing of Ukrainian weapons plants, locations where Ukrainian kamikaze drones were being assembled, munition depots, and other military targets. Earlier in the day, the ministry reported that overnight Russian air defense forces had intercepted 79 Ukrainian kamikaze drones, which Kiev launches daily against targets deep inside Russia. One such recent operation caused a major blackout in the border Kursk Region, according to local authorities. Ukrainian media claimed that Russia used hypersonic air-launched Kinzhal rockets to strike the Dubno airfield, but Moscow did not specify the weapons involved. Kiev reportedly stations some Western-donated F-16 fighter jets in Rovno Region alongside its Soviet legacy warplanes.

Pakistan has lost thousands of lives to terrorists

Pakistan has lost 90,000 people to terrorists over the past 15 years, Syed Tariq Fatemi, special assistant on foreign affairs to the country's prime minister, has told RT. Fatemi emphasized that the Pakistani government is determined to counter terrorism and has made it clear to its neighbors that they must prevent such extremists from entering the country. 'We have lost over a billion and a half US dollars in terms of the damage that they have done,' he told RT in an exclusive interview. The diplomat was in Moscow earlier this week to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and brief him on Islamabad's view of the current situation in Indo-Pakistan relations. Speaking about the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, that killed 26 people, mainly tourists, Fatemi re-iterated that Pakistan denies having any involvement in the attack, refuting New Delhi's claim. The region has been the epicenter of a long-standing dispute between the two neighboring countries since their independence from Britain. The terrorist attack prompted a military response from India, which conducted air strikes on what it alleged were terrorist bases in Pakistan. After a four-day escalation, the two nuclear-armed nations announced a ceasefire on May 10. Fatemi claimed that it would be impossible for terrorists to cross from Pakistan into Indian-administered Kashmir without being detected, given the heavy presence of the Indian military in the area. 'They would need to be superhumans,' he noted. The political adviser drew parallels to a similar incident that occurred in the 1990s, when Pakistan was accused of collusion in a terrorist attack during the administration of former US President Bill Clinton, before his scheduled visit to India. 'From past experience, whenever a very prominent foreign leader would visit India, something like this would take place,' he said, adding that former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright later hinted in her book that the attack had been a false flag operation and that Pakistan had had nothing to do with it. The senior adviser also expressed appreciation for the White House's efforts to broker a ceasefire between the two countries, citing US President Donald Trump's directive to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to speak with leaders in both New Delhi and Islamabad. 'The US Secretary of State suggested that Pakistan should agree to a ceasefire, which is what the Indians wanted. So we said, 'fine',' he explained. Notably, India denied Washington's role in the ceasefire, maintaining that the decision was achieved bilaterally – at the initiative of Pakistan.
