Ex-husband bugged headteacher wife's car with tracker and voice recorder hidden under steering wheel, court hears

A headteacher was stalked by her ex-husband who bugged her new car with a voice recorder and tracker months after they filed for divorce.
Louise Quaid said Darren Grada left her 'very jumpy' and 'hyper vigilant' after he secretly bugged her vehicle and listened to her conversations.
A court heard how Ms Quaid bought a new car in February 2024, four months after the couple filed for divorce.
But on three successive days that month 59-year-old Grada turned up at her location - prompting Ms Quaid, the executive principal of two schools for pupils with complex learning difficulties - to search the vehicle.
This led to the discovery of a voice recording device under the steering wheel, a judge was told.
The victim told Portsmouth Magistrates' Court that managing the anxiety her ex-husband caused her with his 'intrusive' behaviour - which included damaging her car - felt like a 'full time job'.
Grada has now been sentenced to a 12-month community order at Portsmouth Magistrates Court, Hants, after pleading guilty to stalking and criminal damage against Ms Quaid, who he was married to for seven years.
He was also issued with a five-year restraining order which prevents him from going to her home as well as the schools she works at.
Laura Jenking-Rees, prosecuting, told the court on Friday that after searching her car, Ms Quaid found a voice recorder hidden under the steering wheel.
Louise Quaid said Darren Grada left her 'very jumpy' and 'hyper vigilant' after he secretly bugged her vehicle and listened to her conversations
She also found a tracker in the car, and there was some damage which she believed Grada was responsible for.
The court heard that four months later, in June, Grada also turned up at a house when Ms Quaid was supposed to be there - something he tried to pass off as a coincidence.
He also appeared to follow her in his car on another occasion.
The prosecutor said: 'Driving again, (Ms Quaid) sees him parked up. He appears to follow her, stops behind her...then he drives off.'
After Ms Quaid reported her ex-husband to the police, they seized Grada's phone and found audio files on it which were recordings of a 'female speaking in a car'.
Ms Jenking-Rees told the court: 'He has effectively recorded conversations while she has been in the car.'
In a victim impact statement read by the prosecutor to the court, Ms Quaid said that the stalking 'affects her work'.
She added that she now feels 'very jumpy' and 'hyper vigilant' when she goes out.
Ms Quaid said: 'I reflect on these matters, I have stress and anxiety all the time.
'It's been like a full-time job managing my anxiety.'
She is the executive principal for two special schools - Littlegreen Academy in Chichester, West Sussex, which teaches boys aged 7-16 years and rated Good by Ofsted, and Redwood Park Academy in Portsmouth, Hampshire, which is for children between 11 and 16 years old and classed as Outstanding by the education watchdog.
Bridget O'Hagan, defending, said that the offences were committed when Grada was at 'his rock bottom'.
Sentencing, Deputy District Judge Kevin Hill, told Grada he was guilty of 'serious matters' and said the use of a voice recorder and tracking device 'makes it particularly serious because of the intrusive nature of that, and I have heard the impact that these matters have had on her.'
Judge Hill noted that Grada was 'ashamed' of his behaviour.
As part of his sentence, Grada, of Hayling Island, Hampshire, must complete 20 sessions of rehabilitation activities and 80 hours of unpaid work.
He must also pay a £114 surcharge and costs of £85.

Terrifying moment driver catapults holidaymakers into air after deliberately smashing into them in row over double booked AirBnB rental - as he is jailed

This is the terrifying moment a driver deliberately smashed into two holidaymakers, catapulting them into the air, in a row over a double booked AirBnB rental. Johnathan Newbury, 33, was yesterday jailed for ten years for ploughing his SUV into pedestrians Ryan Jones, 18, and a 17-year-old boy. He had armed himself with a zombie knife and was 'intent on violence' during the car attack in July last year, a court heard. The row broke out after Newbury discovered the AirBnB he had rented for the weekend in Cardiff, Wales, had accidently been double booked. Newbury and his friend Elliott Fiteni, 23, were already inside the property when Mr Jones and the teenager turned up for their own stay. Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court heard Newbury began hurling threats at the pair, shouting 'I'll f*** you up' through a window. He then hunted the men in a black SUV before mowing them down in the street. Prosecutor James Wilson said footage showed the vehicle 'immediately speeding up' and striking two of them as they crossed. Newbury then fled the scene as the victims were left on the ground with serious injuries. Mr Jones suffered injuries to his pelvis and right foot while the teenager lost consciousness and sustained injuries to his jaw, ribs, chest and abdomen. Mr Wilson said the row had started over the booking made in the Cathays area of Cardiff in July of last year where Newbury was due to stay with friend Elliot Fiteni. He said: 'Mr Jones, [...] and another friend had booked an Airbnb on Bruce Street called the Comfortable Stay. 'By chance, a booking had been made at the same address on behalf of Mr Fiteni, who accepted he stayed at the address along with Mr Newbury. 'They were already at the building when Mr Jones and [...] walked towards it.' Newbury, of Cardiff, was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article. Judge Jeremy Jenkins Newbury 'You were present at an AirBnB at Bruce Street in Cardiff, the two complainants [...] and Mr Jones had also booked accommodation at the same address and there had been an earlier altercation.' The judge said Newbury had then been part of a group 'armed with what has been described as a zombie knife' and 'intent on violence'. He said: 'The clear aim was to attack [...] and Mr Jones, both ran away from the scene.' Judge Jenkins said Newbury was the driver of the SUV which was 'seen to speed up, to drive on the wrong side of the road into the junction and to deliberately collide with the two men, throwing them up in the air.' Newbury was handed an extended sentence of 10 years and told he must serve at least five years and four months behind bars.

Emma Radcanu's stalker 'caught by Wimbledon organisers attempting to buy tickets for this year's event' - months after being given a restraining order in Dubai

The man who was handed a restraining order this year for stalking Emma Raducanu at the Dubai Open has reportedly been caught applying for ticket's to this month's Wimbledon. The British No1 was left in tears during her second-round match against Karolina Muchova after spotting the man in the stands. The man had been displaying 'fixated behaviour' and had handed Raducanu a letter and asked for a photo earlier that week. A former member of Raducanu's coaching team also revealed that the man had been following the 22-year-old to a number of events in the wake of the Australian Open before he was ejected from the Gulf State tournament. The man's name was then circulated to tournament organisers across the WTA tennis circuit. But as per the BBC, his name was flagged by the All England Club's security system indicating that he had attempted to gain entry to the Championships via the public ballot. More to follow.
