Harbhajan Singh tells Sarfaraz Khan 'Look at Karun Nair' as England snub deemed 'unfortunate': 'I was a bit shocked'

Hindustan Times5 hours ago

When the Indian team for the upcoming England Tour was announced, Sarfaraz Khan's name was a big absence from the squad roster, leaving many fans and experts surprised by the decision. Ahead of the squad announcement, many felt that he had done enough to claim a spot in the squad for the five-match Test series vs England, having made his India debut last year in a home serfies against the same side. In that series, he got half-centuries in both innings of the first Test, and then backed it up with a sensational 150 vs New Zealand at home, when other Indian batters miserably failed. Sarfaraz's ton wasn't enough as India were whitewashed 0-3 by New Zealand at home.
He was also part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad, but didn't get a chance to play. But for the upcoming England Tests, the BCCI selectors decided to go with the likes of Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair, dropping Sarfaraz in the process.

Speaking to PTI, former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh weighed in on Sarfaraz's exclusion from the squad for the England series, labelling it as 'very unfortunate'.
'It's very unfortunate... I was a bit shocked not seeing his name in the squad. I'm sure he will come back strong. He has got that will to make a comeback…All I can say is, don't be disheartened, you will get your due, if not today, then tomorrow…Look at Karun Nair', he said.
'He scored 300 runs against England and then never got too many opportunities. Now he is back in England with the team,' he further added.
The upcoming Test series will see a new generation take over the mantle, with the appointment of Shubman Gill as the new Test skipper. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma announced Test retirements and R Ashwin quitting all formats. The only seniors left from the previous leadership are Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant.

‘Honestly, I couldn't understand what was happening,' Karun Nair on being dropped from India team in 2018

Karun Nair who has made an incredible comeback to the Indian Test squad after a gap of seven years has termed the 2022 season, where he was dropped from Karnataka Ranji side was the darkest phase of his career. The middle-order batsman, who is in line to start the first Test at Leeds, which would be his first since March 2017, said the 2022 phase was worse than the time he was dropped from the Indian side. After scoring a triple century against England towards the end of 2016, Karun remained part of India's Test squads but never played a Test since the final Test against Australia in 2017. During the 2018 tour of England, he warmed the bench in each of the five Tests with India flying in Hanuma Vihari as a replacement player and playing him straight away. From there on his struggles continued before Karnataka dropped him from all squads in 2022. 'In terms of incidents, I would say, it was quite a dark place at the end of 2022. Very emotional phase for me. I think the toughest time for me. Even tougher than 2018, or whatever, whenever that was,' Nair said during an interaction with R Ashwin on his Youtube channel. Speaking about the time he was dropped from the India squad soon after scoring the triple-century, Karun lamented that he didn't have big scores to show during the Test series against Australia that followed soon after the England series. 'Honestly, I couldn't understand what was happening. Because after the 300 in Chennai, after the Australia series, I think the next series was in Sri Lanka in 2017. I wasn't part of that squad either. And from then on, I couldn't understand what was happening. Then I had to go back in domestic cricket. But if I look back and think that there is one side of me saying that 'yes, I didn't get too many opportunities'. But the other way I would also think is the four innings that I played against Australia, and I got a couple of starts. If I had just converted those starts into bigger scores, maybe I wouldn't be in this position or had to have gone through that,' Karun said. After moving to Vidarbha ahead of the 2023-24 season, Karun once again hit a purple patch, scoring consistently across formats. He scored 863 runs in Vidarbha's Ranji winning campaign in 2024/25 season which earned him a recall to India's Test squad for the tour of England. 'I think at the moment, at least I am very grateful. Like you said, I have gotten past that complaining stage. Very grateful to be in the situation that I am and I just treat every day as something that's given to me, and I am living my life and doing what I love,' Karun added.

IND vs ENG: Harshit Rana to stay back in England with Team India for Test series

File image of Harshit Rana (TOI Photo) Mumbai: In a move which will reinforce India's pace attack, fast bowler Harshit Rana has been asked by the team management to stay back with the Indian Test team in England, a source confirmed to TOI. Rana was with the India 'A' team in England to play two four-day matches against the England Lions and an intra-squad game against the Test team in Beckenham. However, Rana has not been officially added to the squad as yet. One reason for this decision could be that the pitch for the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, bears a lush green look, which means that a bowler like Rana, who can generate pace and bounce, might prove to be handy in those conditions. Also, India's leading bowler, premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah is expected to not play all five Tests due to workload management. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Rana played the first match for India A against England Lions at Canterbury, where he returned figures of 1/99 in 27 overs and scored 16 runs. Kuldeep Yadav hints at spin-friendly wicket ahead of England Test series He made his Test debut during last year's tour of Australia where he took four wickets in two Tests at an average of 50.75, his best being three for 48 in Perth on debut. He wasn't picked for the five-match series against England as the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, preferred Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna along with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. The other members of the India 'A' team who aren't in the main Test side or haven't landed a County deal yet will be on the flight back home on Tuesday. Overall, the Delhi pacer averages 27.79 with the ball in 13 first-class cricket games, having taken 48 wickets. He also averages 32.80 with the bat, including hitting a century and two fifties. The Delhi speedster broke into the Indian team after a splendid show for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024, when current India head coach Gautam Gambhir was the franchise's mentor.
