Gerik crash: Pahang Sultan orders mosques to hold ‘solat jenazah ghaib'
KUANTAN: Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has decreed that all mosques in the state hold the 'solat jenazah ghaib' (funeral prayer in the absence of the deceased) for the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who perished in the road crash in Gerik, Perak.
Pahang mufti Datuk Dr Asmadi Mohamed Naim who announced the matter, said the 'solat jenazah ghaib', along with the recitation of Yasin and Tahlil, would be held after Maghrib prayers tomorrow.
'Let us all pray for the recovery of the victims who are still receiving treatment, and may Pahang be protected from any calamities or harm,' he said in a statement.
In the early Monday morning incident, 15 UPSI students were killed when a chartered bus carrying them from Jertih to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned in an accident involving a Perodua Alza on the East-West Highway, near Tasik Banding, Gerik.

Gerik crash bus driver out of hospital, in police custody
IPOH: The bus driver who was involved in an accident that claimed the lives of 15 students of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Gerik on Monday has been arrested by the police. Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the 39-year-old man was arrested at around 5.45pm after being discharged from the hospital, reported Sinar Harian. According to him, the suspect would be taken to the Gerik District Police Headquarters (IPD) to assist in the investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. 'We are waiting for further instructions from the State Prosecution Director on whether the bus driver can be charged in court tomorrow or otherwise,' he said yesterday. Earlier, the driver, a local man, had given his statement to the police. He had previously received treatment at Taiping Hospital. On Monday morning, KM53, Jalan Raya Timur-Barat Gerik-Jeli near Tasik Banding, a bus carrying 42 passengers was said to have lost control before hitting an MPV carrying a family of four. The chartered bus was on its way from Jertih, Terengganu, to the UPSI campus in Tanjung Malim after the Hari Raya Aidiladha holiday.

Bus brakes being checked
GERIK: Vehicle inspection agency Puspakpom has conducted a check on the brake system of the bus involved in a tragic accident on the East-West Highway near here. The report on the check is expected to be ready by tomorrow, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke (pic). Loke also warned the bus driver over his claim that the brake system malfunctioned prior to the incident. 'I am not sure if the claim was made to protect himself. 'Whatever he is saying cannot be taken at face value,' he told a press conference after visiting the crash site and also checking on the bus at the Gerik district police headquarters yesterday. 'But I want to warn the driver to not simply say things that may not be true. 'The cause of the accident has not been determined. Whether it was due to the road conditions or caused by the bus driver, it will be investigated thoroughly.' Early on Monday, the bus flipped on its side, killing 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students. Loke said the company operating the bus can also be hauled to court. 'It is clear that the bus owner leased the vehicle to another person, which is an offence,' he said. Loke also reminded all public transport operators to do their own Inspection and Safety Audit (Jisa) before the Road Transport Department (JPJ) comes knocking. 'All public transport operators need to buck up. 'Comply and do the audit before JPJ conducts checks,' he said, adding that Jisa, which is different from the mandatory six-month vehicle inspection, is to enhance the safety aspects of a vehicle. 'It (Jisa) is not something new but compliance is weak,' the minister said. He also said a large-scale audit will be held to check compliance among bus and lorry operators. 'It is not a reaction to the accident. Even before, the audit had been conducted periodically.'

IPOH, June 12 (Bernama) -- Police have launched an investigation into a Facebook account that posted offensive remarks about the deaths of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in the recent road accident in Gerik. Manjung police chief ACP Hasbullah Abd Rahman said a report was received at about 4.40 pm yesterday. 'A Facebook account under the name 'Khalid Yunus' was found to have posted an offensive remark about the students,' he said in a statement today.
