Ford 3.7-Liter Engine Teardown Reveals Its Questionable Design

Ford
3.7-liter Cyclone V-6 engine powered an assortment of vehicles for the automaker throughout the 2010s. It replaced the 4.0-liter V-6 in the
Mustang
, giving the pony car over 300 horsepower in its base form. Ford put it in the
F-150
and
Explorer
, too, but there are some design differences depending on which vehicle you choose. Those differences can greatly determine your future ownership experience.
The V-6 you see here came out of a
2019 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor
, and because of its transverse layout, the engine features an internally mounted water pump. It's nestled in the V, driven by the timing chain. The tension can cause the seal to fail, letting coolant seep into the crankcase and mix with the oil, which is terrible for engines.
This water pump was heavily damaged, with chunks of the impeller missing. And there was plenty of evidence of its demise. There was coolant where there shouldn't have been, and plenty of metal flakes littered throughout the engine and oil.
What's most concerning is this engine's mileage. The V-6 had around 50,000 miles when it failed. It was in a police vehicle, which means idling for long periods, which might have hastened its failure. But still, that's an incredibly low interval for such a large amount of damage.
One of the only ways to avoid catastrophic engine failure is to replace the water pump before it goes bad, though considering how far it's buried, be prepared to spend a lot to have it done. Otherwise, your Ford V-6 might end up like this one.

What happened to carbureted engines? Once the most popular option amongst classic car enthusiasts and garage mechanics everywhere, it's been a few decades since we last saw one, as they're now reduced to a nostalgic commodity in cars, though they do still exist on small engines, such as lawn mowers. Back in the good old days, however, carburetors were found on some of the most exciting classic sports cars, and they were a reasonable option for owners and drivers looking to wrench on their vehicles. If this method of fuel delivery was so beloved, why did it drop to the wayside? As the popularity of fuel injection grew, we started to see the end of mass-produced vehicles with carbureted engines. Carbs, while simpler to work on and maintain and also more affordable, had some unfortunate downsides compared to the newer tech of fuel injection. As RSP Motorsports points out, fuel injection offered better fuel economy as it could optimize fuel delivery based on real-time engine conditions, as opposed to the fixed jets of a carburetor. This was due in part to the rise of electronic control units (ECUs), which gave cars computers that could calculate and make adjustments — although they also added a layer of expense and complexity. Because of adjustable fuel delivery, fuel injection was also more efficient, providing a more precise air-fuel mixture that reduced emissions compared to carburetors. By the mid-1980s, we were nearing the end of the carbureted engines in everyday cars on U.S. production lines as the world witnessed the rise of fuel injection. Fuel injection may be more complex, but its benefits made it more marketable to some consumers. American car enthusiasts might remember the carburetor sitting under the hood of their sports car, but these systems weren't exclusive to the U.S. market. On the global market, carbureted engines had a longer life span for many automotive brands, according to the Ask Car Guys subreddit. These markets focused less on fuel economy and efficiency, and also didn't see the consequences of laws and regulations cracking down on emissions. European, Asian, and African car markets continued to see cars produced with carbureted engines into the mid-1990s. Just because they've been phased out of production doesn't mean people don't still love cars with carbureted engines. Without the need for complex electronics we have in today's modern cars, carb engines were much simpler to work on, as stated by — and, for many people, more enjoyable. You could work on your car in the garage without concern for complex ECUs, and they could be manually tuned and adjusted if you knew what you were doing, without the need for expensive, complicated software. Outside of simplicity, many fans of the carbureted engine just enjoy the engine sound and feel. They have a distinct sound, throttle response, and feel that is very dissimilar to cars we have in production today, making many people loyal to this now nostalgic form of fuel delivery. Carburetors were easy to make adjustments and tuning changes to, as they didn't require fancy computers and knowledge to figure out, but Electronics for Imaging (EFI) provided arguably smoother throttle response and wasn't as annoying to try to start on a cold day — a struggle anyone who has owned a carbureted car probably knows well after messing around with a manual choke on a cold winter day. Just because we don't see cars with carburetors coming off the assembly line doesn't mean they are off the road. Many car collectors and classic car enthusiasts still enjoy wrenching, owning, and driving carbureted cars today. They may be "gone," but they will never be forgotten — there will always be something tried and true about a carbureted engine that enthusiasts will always have an appreciation for.

Driver hospitalized after Sandusky County crash: OSHP

SANDUSKY TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WJW) – The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash in Sandusky County that sent one driver to the hospital with serious injuries on Saturday afternoon. The crash happened on U.S. 20 near County Road 128 just before 1:30 p.m. According to state troopers, a preliminary investigation revealed that a 2016 Honda Civic heading east on U.S. 20 moved into the right lane before going off the side of the road. The Honda then went off the right side of the road, struck a tree and overturned, according to the state patrol. The Toyota crossed into the westbound lanes and also overturned, investigators said. Man arrested after fatally stabbing roommate, injuring stepfather: Akron PD The Honda driver, identified as a 42-year-old Warren man, was seriously injured and taken to St. Vincent's hospital. The Toyota driver, a 47-year-old Fremont man, suffered minor injuries. Investigators said both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation at this time. Michigan nonprofit Wheels in Motion showcases adaptive adventures at Taylor car show

Organizers with Wheels in Motion say they had a successful car show extravaganza in Taylor on Saturday. CBS News Detroit spoke with Michigan State Police Detective Devin Kachar, who, three years ago, was shot multiple times and paralyzed while doing undercover surveillance in Detroit. "You can basically let it control you or get out and do what you can to control it and still get back into doing the things you love," Kachar said. He said making modifications to vehicles makes that possible. "You know it looks different, but there's still ways to do stuff you enjoy," he said. Many of the cars at Saturday's extravaganza have adaptations that make it possible for people with disabilities to drive them, which showcases the work that Wheels in Motion does — providing off-road adventures, handcycling and boating adventures in an adaptive way. "Essentially, it's just a mechanism that's used to operate the gas and brake via your hands. You basically just drive with your hands," Kachar said. Those mechanisms can vary depending on what a person needs to drive. "So that could be levers that could be different sorts of mechanisms depending on how your hands operate and kind of the function or strength you have in your upper body," Kachar said. He added that Saturday's event was the first for Wheels in Motion, but he hopes to see it come together year after year. "One of our main goals for the Wheels in Motion, especially with this event was to get as much people out here and understand what we do and how we do it, and we are trying to make a difference," Kachar said.
