Chicago teachers bargaining team to review contract deal
CHICAGO — Monday, a team of Chicago teachers will review a proposed contract deal, and decide whether it should go through the union's approval process.Chicago Public Schools and the union both reported Friday, they've reached a tentative agreement. It includes a four-percent cost-of-living increase in each of four years. And there's money to hire more librarians and teaching assistants.
If the bargaining team accepts the deal, it'll send it to the union's house of delegates. From there, it would go to the union's 30,000 members for a vote.

Talks have taken nearly a year. The negotiations began with more than 700 union proposals and the two sides have spent the past week on a few remaining sticking points, including teacher evaluations, elementary school teacher preparation time and veteran teacher pay.
Sources familiar with the negotiations told WGN-TV that the veteran teacher pay system has been overhauled in the potential deal.

After two-year investigation, Madison County tax preparer arrested for Ponzi scheme allegations, charged with 49 crimes
HAMILTON, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The Madison County tax preparer and insurance agent under state and federal investigation for allegations he operated a Ponzi scheme has been arrested and indicted on 49 criminal counts. The New York State Attorney General announced the unsealing of the indictment, which accuses Miles Burton Marshall of stealing more than $50 million from 988 investors over 30 years. Marshall is accused of taking money from clients under the guise of an investment, promising a generous 8% return, but instead using funds to pay returns to prior investors, pay personal expenses, and expenses of his other businesses. In March of 2023, Marshall's attorney told NewsChannel 9 his client is 'not running a Ponzi scheme… as is evident by the fact that he has a number of successful businesses, including over 100 investment properties in and around the Hamilton area.' The Attorney General's Office has been investigating Marshall's business practices since March of 2023 after he failed to pay debts to clients, as NewsChannel 9 was first to report. In April of 2023, Marshall declared bankruptcy, saying he only has around $20 million in assets but owes $90 million to hundreds of people who loaned him money, believing it was an investment opportunity. Many of the debtors have lost their life savings and are hoping some money is returned through the bankruptcy process. In June of 2023, the U.S. government accused Marshall of running a 'Ponzi' scheme, indicating he used proceeds from new investors to pay off old investors. Australian TV Reporter Struck by Rubber Bullet on Live Video in LA
An Australian TV reporter was struck by a rubber bullet while doing a live video report in Los Angeles on June 8. The reporter, 9News Australia's U.S. correspondent Lauren Tomasi, was reporting on the anti-ICE unrest that has erupted in L.A. "U.S. Correspondent Lauren Tomasi has been caught in the crossfire as the LAPD fired rubber bullets at protesters in the heart of Los Angeles," her station wrote on X, sharing the video. In the viral video, Tomasi said, "LAPD moving in on horseback, firing rubber bullets at protesters, moving them on through the heart of LA." Then a puff of smoke wafted up, and Tomasi let out a yell as a rubber bullet appeared to strike her in the leg while bangs went off in the distance. "You just (expletive) shot the - " someone said off camera before the video cuts off. According to the New York Post, Tomasi and her camera operator 'are safe and will continue their essential work covering these events," per a statement from 9News. 'This incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers journalists can face while reporting from the front lines of protests, underscoring the importance of their role in providing vital information,' the network added, according to the Post. Tomasi has been posting updates from L.A. on her X page. "8pm. Dozens of police have just moved in. Another attempt to move people on. Flash bang grenades - then fireworks - going off," she wrote in one post.
