Winner of D.C. Lego contest shows pandas taking over the capital
June 11 (UPI) -- The Lego Discovery Center Washington, D.C., unveiled the winner of its 2025 Mini Master Model Builder qualifying competition: a 12-year-old's creation showing the nation's capital being taken over by pandas.
The Lego Discovery Center, located in the District's Springfield Town Center, said it will display the build, titled Panda-monium in D.C., through June 30, and it will then be sent to the Lego House in Billund, Denmark, to be judged alongside Mini Master Model Builder creations from 27 other Lego Discovery Centers across the globe.
The scene's creator, 12-year-old Ricky, then has the chance to be named Lego's first-ever Global Mini Master Model Builder.
The build features pandas taking over famous Washington locations and artifacts including the Washington Monument, the National History Museum, the Hope Diamond, the Declaration of Independence, a Metro station and the stovepipe hat from the Lincoln Monument.
Ricky said the build took "easily 100 hours" to complete.

Photo courtesy of Universal Studios June 12 (UPI) -- Universal Studios Hollywood released a video previewing the upcoming Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift roller coaster. The coaster opens at the Los Angeles theme park in 2026. The video intercuts race scenes from the movie franchise with animatics of what the finished roller coaster will look like. A train of four passenger cars, modeled after vehicles from the movies, will run along the track and also spin individually 360 degrees. UPI saw the 4100 foot track under construction in May when it visited Universal Studios Hollywood for Fan Fest nights. The track includes loops and corkscrew turns. Universal announced the ride's speed at 72 miles per hour, making it the fastest at the park. Other Universal roller coasters are based on the Harry Potter franchise and 1999's The Mummy. By comparison, Cedar Point's Top Thrill Dragster can reach 120 mph and Six Flag Magic Mountain's Superman: Escape from Krypton could hit 100. Magic Mountain's Ninja and New Revolution each go 55 mph while Disneyland's classics Big Thunder Mountain is 36 and Space Mountain 27 mph. The park first announced the coaster in 2024. It is the third attraction based on the franchise, following a vehicular stunt exhibit Extreme Close-Up and Supercharged, a stop on the tram tour simulating a street race with cast members from the movie on video screens.

This LEGO Podrace Set is the perfect Father's Day gift for your Star Wars-obsessed dad
New York Post may be compensated and/or receive an affiliate commission if you click or buy through our links. Featured pricing is subject to change. The best way to spend Father's Day is to sit down with your dad and chat. That's best done, in our experience, over some sort of activity. Sometimes that's as simple as dinner. Maybe you mix it up and go fishing or golfing. Or, if you've got more of an indoor dad, you can hunker down together over a 'Star Wars' themed LEGO set, like the LEGO Star Wars: The Phantom Menace Mos ESPA Podrace Diorama, available for a whopping 44% off this week on Amazon. Post Wanted and Decider's very own Angela Tricario is a self-professed LEGO fanatic, and a 'Star Wars' fan, to boot. She's built the set in question, and had this to say about it: 'One of the favorite things my dad and I do together is build LEGOs, and though we didn't build this specific set together, he thought it was really cool once I'd put it together!' 'Perfect for any Star Wars fan, but especially prequel defenders like myself, this diorama style set combines building scenery with slightly more complex podracing vehicles for something that's not too hard, but definitely a little more challenging. This one ranks among my favorites in my collection because it's a great display piece once it's built, too; you can gift it to dad, and then he can admire his handiwork by displaying it for everyone to see.' We're sold! Amazon The LEGO Star Wars: The Phantom Menace Mos Espa Podrace Diorama captures the thrilling high-speed action of Anakin Skywalker's iconic race. With detailed brick-built podracers and a sculpted Tatooine landscape, it offers dynamic motion and nostalgia. Ideal for collectors, it celebrates Episode I's 25th anniversary, combining display-worthy design with authentic Star Wars charm in a compact, stylish diorama. Best of all? It's available for 44% off ahead of Father's Day on Amazon. This article was written by P.J. McCormick, New York Post Commerce Deals Writer/Reporter.
