Fernandes rejects Al-Hilal offer to stay at Manchester United
June 3 (Reuters) - Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes turned down the opportunity to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in order to keep playing "at the highest level", he said on Tuesday.
The Portuguese midfielder admitted that he had considered the move, which media reports said was worth four times his current salary, after being contacted by Al-Hilal's president.
"There was that possibility, the president of Al-Hilal called me a month ago to ask me about it," Fernandes, who is preparing to face Germany with Portugal, told reporters on Tuesday.
"It was a big offer, very ambitious. There was a waiting period for me to think about the future."
Fernandes ultimately decided to stay at United and said he was motivated by his desire to continue playing at the top level and encouraged by his family and the club's coach Ruben Amorim.
"I would be willing to do it if Manchester United thought so," Fernandes added. "I spoke to the coach Ruben Amorim who really tried to talk me out of it. The club said they would not be willing to sell me, only if I wanted to leave.
"I spoke to my wife and family, and she asked me what my personal goals were in my career.
"It would have been easy to move there but I want to keep myself at the highest level, playing in the big competitions and I feel capable of it. I am happy with my decision."
The 30-year-old Fernandes scored 19 goals and provided 19 assists in 57 appearances across all competitions for United last season, winning the club's Player of the Year award for the fourth time.
However, it was a season to forget for the team, as they finished 15th in the Premier League, their lowest league finish in half a century, and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea hold Mohammed Kudus swap deal talks as separate winger bid considered
There have been loose discussions in the past few days between West Ham and Chelsea over Ghana international attacker Mohammed Kudus West Ham have rebuffed the chance to sign multiple Chelsea players as part of a potential swap deal for Mohammed Kudus. The 24-year-old Hammers attacker has three separate release clauses written into his current contract at the London Stadium but they're only active for the first 10 days of July. The buy-out clauses are set at £80million for European clubs, £85m for fellow Premier League sides and a whopping £120m for Saudi Pro League teams. Beyond that, West Ham are thought to be open to offers for the Ghana international, who is under contract until 2028 but the Irons do also have a 12-month extension option. In the past few days, Graham Potter's side are understood to have snubbed the chance to trade Kudus in a multi-player package deal with Chelsea. It's believed the West Ham hierarchy would, however, consider straight-cash proposals even though internally, Kudus is regarded as one of the club's best players. West Ham have previously held an interest in the likes of defender Trevoh Chalobah, Borussia Dortmund loanee Carney Chukwuemeka, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Armando Broja but on this occasion, they were reluctant to negotiate. Discussions did not go very far, though separate sources have claimed that Kudus has also been floated to other Premier League clubs in recent weeks. Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr have the player on their radar, though Liverpool's Luis Diaz is still considered their top target. West Ham are not under any immediate pressure to sell in relation to Premier League PSR rules but they're keen to raise funds through player sales to bolster Potter's summer transfer budget. Viktor Gyokeres makes Man Utd U-turn after learning Arsenal transfer decision
Viktor Gyokeres had looked to have ruled out a move to Manchester United after their Champions League failure - putting Arsenal in pole position - but the Sporting Lisbon star may have had a change of heart Victor Gyokeres looks to have changed his tune and is now open to a move to Manchester United - despite them not having Champions League football - which was believed to have been a determining factor. No formal talks have been held between those in Manchester and Sporting bosses, but the Red Devils' pursuit of a new striker is well documented. The Portuguese side want around £60million for Gyökeres - which is a £25m reduction on his £85m release clause. Gyokeres has a verbal agreement in place with Sporting allowing him to leave for less after he chose to stay in Lisbon last summer. Arsenal, like United, are in the market for a new frontman after opting against signing a new No 9 for several windows. Mirror Football understands that Arsenal are prioritising Benjamin Sesko, though. Arsenal's sporting director Andrea Berta has been negotiating with representatives of both players and their respective clubs simultaneously as the Gunners seek the best deal. However, the decision among the club's hierarchy is to push forward with their swoop for the RB Leipzig forward, rather than Gyokeres. That would leave the Swede, who scored more than 50 times in all competitions, looking for a new buyer. Several of Europe's top clubs are not looking to add a striker which means, even for a player of his quality, options may be limited. Amorim was the man who signed Gyokeres after he impressed in the Championship with Coventry City, later helping him become one of Europe's most prolific strikers. The United boss has just missed out on Liam Delap, who chose to join Chelsea, leaving him to review other options. Matheus Cunha has already been signed for £62.5m. The 27-year-old has just helped Sporting claim the domestic double and has remained tight-lipped on his future. He said: 'Let us see. It's hard for me to say, because yeah it is football and you never know what's going to happen in the summer. So for me to say anything else than that is impossible.' Gyokeres was asked specifically about the possibility of joining Arsenal and added: 'I don't know, I just focus on this. I've tried to focus on the last games because it's so important and I don't want to think about anything else. So yeah, if anything is true, let's see in the summer.'
