Britain claim first win of SailGP season in Sydney

BBC News09-02-2025

Great Britain's SailGP team extended their lead in the overall standings with a thrilling first win of the season in Australia. Driver Dylan Fletcher led the British team to podium finishes in the opening two events, finishing second in November's season-opener in Dubai and third last time out in Auckland, New Zealand in the 14-regatta event.GB claimed four top-three finishes in the seven qualifying races to reach the final in Sydney Harbour, alongside hosts Australia and Canada, led by former British driver Giles Scott. And they found the better breeze in the closing stages to overhaul Canada and win by six seconds, while Tom Slingsby's Australian team had to settle for third after being penalised for encroachment at the start."We need to keep working hard and delivering, but this is a great result for the team and I'm really proud of how everyone performed," said Fletcher, 36, who won gold in the men's 49er class at the Tokyo Olympics.Ben Ainslie, CEO of the British team, added: "It's only Dylan's third event with the team and he's done brilliantly. He's world-class and that's why we wanted to get him in this game." It was a first victory for the British team since June - when they won in Canada in the 2024 campaign with Scott as driver - and moved them to 27 points overall, three clear of second-placed Australia and seven ahead of reigning champions Spain in third. Racing now moves to the United States for back-to-back legs in Los Angeles (15-16 March) and San Francisco (22-23 March).

Emma Raducanu feeling ‘pretty good' as she steps up Wimbledon preparations

The 2021 US Open champion, who suffered a second-round exit to Iga Swiatek at the French Open, has been hindered by persistent spasming for much of 2025. She is set to play at Queens this week, with grand slam action at the All England Club scheduled to start on Monday, June 30. 'I got back (from Paris) last week and then I got straight back on the court,' Raducanu told a press conference. 'I had a small interruption with a bit of a back spasm again, which was a bit annoying and that hindered my grass prep. But the last few days I have managed to get on the grass. 'I can't really predict the future. I know I have been managing my back for the last few weeks now and it's something that comes and goes. 'It can be frustrating. I try not to let it get to me because I have a pretty good feel when it happens of how to manage it. All I can do is deal with what's in front of me 'Today was the first day I opened it up and played points on the grass. It is pretty early days and I can't say I have had a lot of prep on it. But I felt pretty good today.' British number two Raducanu, who is ranked 41st in the world, was dismantled 6-1 6-2 by reigning champion Swiatek at Roland Garros. Subject to overcoming a qualifier, she could face current Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova in the second round at Queens, while she is set to pair up with British number one Katie Boulter in the doubles. 'Playing a doubles match with Katie will hopefully give me a good feel for that surface and it will be positive,' the 22-year-old said. 'I really like playing with Katie. We've practised a few times together in the past at Billie Jean King Cup ties.'

Aberdeen signs Australian striker Kusini Yengi on free transfer

Aberdeen have signed their third Australian of the summer after targeting former Portsmouth striker Kusini Yengi. The 26-year-old will arrive at Pittodrie on a free transfer when his Fratton Park contract expires in the coming days. Yengi – whose brother Tete plays for Livingston – has scored six goals in 11 internationals for the Socceroos. The forward scored five goals in his first five games for Portsmouth after arriving from Western Sydney Wanderers in 2023 and netted 13 goals in all in his debut campaign as Pompey won the League One title. But he failed to find the net for his club in an injury-hampered second season and will look to kick-start his career at Pittodrie having been released by Pompey. Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin, who has also signed Australian goalkeeper Nick Suman and winger Nicolas Milanovic this summer, said: 'We were quite specific about the type of profile we had identified to play as a striker for Aberdeen and Kusini has a lot of the qualities we were after. 'He is tall, strong and quick, he will work hard for the team and lead the line. He has also proven at both Portsmouth and with the Socceroos that he can score goals on a consistent basis. 'It is important for us to have different profiles of players who can bring specific strengths to our shape and how we want to play. 'With European group stage football and a busy domestic schedule, he will play a vital role for us in what we hope will be a competitive squad.' The 6ft 2in striker said: 'It feels great to be an Aberdeen player and I can't wait to get started. I'm looking forward to playing here for several years. 'The manager and staff have all been very positive and their enthusiasm was one of the main reasons I chose to come here. 'I loved the project that was pitched to me – what the manager and coaches want to achieve and what they stand for, where they think they can utilise me as a player to help the club. So I was very excited. 'Every kid dreams of playing European football and playing for big clubs like Aberdeen so I am very excited to play in those competitions and represent Aberdeen.'
