Audi's Upcoming Q3 Faces These 3 Fierce Competitors
Audi will reveal its new crossover next week, and it has to overcome these three competitors.
New Q3 Faces Stiff Competition
Audi teased the new-generation Q3 subcompact crossover this week, which is set to be fully revealed on Monday, June 16. We expect a range of improvements to the brand's smallest crossover, which slots in below the Q5. While specifics about the Q3 are still up in the air, we do know which key rivals the new Q3 will have to match or surpass if it is to succeed in this competitive segment. Let's take a closer look at those.
BMW X1: The Sporty One
The third-generation BMW X1 debuted for the 2023 model year in the United States, and it's always been regarded as a sportier alternative to the more subdued Q3. That hasn't changed for the latest X1, which sports assertive, angular lines and two energetic powertrains. Even the base xDrive28i model has 241 horsepower and a 6.2-second 0-60 mph sprint time, easily better than the current Q3. The M35i gets 313 hp and a 5.2-second sprint, along with all the aggressive touches we expect of an M-lite model.
Despite its focus on performance, the X1 still delivers as a practical crossover, with a spacious rear seat and trunk. At 25.7 cubic feet, the X1 has a slightly larger trunk than the current Q3.
To match or surpass the X1, Audi will need to sharpen up the new Q3's chassis, while also giving it more power to keep up with its BMW rival.
Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class: The Fancy One
While the X1 entertains, the GLA impresses with its ritzy cabin, smooth ride, and posh appearance. It's evolved into a far more cohesive package than the first-generation GLA, but the Mercedes is quite expensive, starting at $43,000. The base model's performance (0-60 in 6.8 seconds) falls somewhere between the current Q3 and X1.
Inside, the GLA has the most striking design of these small luxury crossovers, with dual screens and elaborate lighting. It's not necessarily more substantial than the Audi or BMW, but the high-tech look appeals to the younger crowd, and they'll most likely be shopping in this category.
We expect the new Q3 to match the GLA in terms of tech, while being similarly refined.

Volvo XC40: The Left-Field One
The XC40 is no longer new, but Volvo got the small SUV recipe so right from the start that it remains in contention with its German competitors. The Volvo has a chunky yet timeless look to it, and the uncluttered interior has a more serene vibe than the high-tech GLA's. Volvo's infotainment system is not quite as advanced as the others, though.
The standard 247-hp powertrain delivers perky performance, with a 0-60 time of only 6.1 seconds. Once again, this is better than what the current Q3 delivers. It's also worth noting that the XC40 has a powerful 402-hp plug-in hybrid powertrain, which the existing Q3 does not. However, the new Q3 may have its own PHEV, which would greatly diversify the powertrain lineup for this smallest Audi crossover.
Inside, Volvo's interior quality is excellent, whereas some new Audi models seem to be a downgrade compared to previous models – let's hope the Q3 doesn't take a step back in this aspect.
Final Thoughts
Audi has often occupied a middle ground between the sportiness of BMW and the luxury of Mercedes, and the new Q3 is expected to do the same. Depending on how you look at it, this is a good or a bad thing: Either Audi offers the best of both worlds or ends up with a muddled identity.
Based on these three rivals, we hope Audi has focused on driver appeal and performance. These are areas in which one or more of these talented crossovers excel, or where the existing Q3 has fallen behind the pack. The current Q3 is still competitive in terms of quality and refinement, so we hope the same cost-cutting that's evident in larger new Audi models has not been applied here.
All will be revealed early next week when the covers come off the new Q3.

BMW Launches Stunning M2 CS Built to Kill on Track
The ultimate driving machine for the track is here. BMW introduces the stunning M2 CS, a purpose-built weapon engineered to maximize speed and agility on race days. The new M2 CS is here The current BMW M2 is considered one of the best driver's cars on the planet and one of the best BMW M cars ever created, which is saying something. Now, BMW ratchets up the G87 second-generation M2 with the highly anticipated M2 CS. The first official M2 CS images recently dropped after its debut at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2025, and they show us a more aggressive, track-ready M2 that promises to be even more rewarding than the already thrilling M2. Previous Pause Next Unmute 0:00 / 0:09 Audi A5 replaces A4: So, what's changed? Watch More The M2 CS gets a design worthy of its name 2026 BMW M2 CS — Source: BMW The CS gets some important aesthetic and functional changes that set it apart from the standard M2. In the past, all CS (Competition Sport) cars looked quite a bit different from stock, and based on these photos, we can see that the M2 CS gets new grille intakes and revisions to the lower bumper intakes. It looks like the vertical slats from the stock M2 are gone, while the rear receives a sizeable ducktail spoiler. 2026 BMW M2 CS The M2 CS also receives intricate matte bronze wheels, a BMW CS hallmark that's not available on the regular M2, with bold red brake calipers peeking through. The wheels will most likely be shod with grippy Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, but there's also word that the M2 CS could get sport, track, and ultra-track tire choices. Both the bronze wheels and the brake calipers pop nicely against the model's rather conservative flat grey exterior paint known as Brooklyn Grey, although other paint choices will include Sapphire Black and M Portimao Blue. All three paint colors are currently also available on the 2025 BMW M2. Inside, the M2 CS gets more aggressive sport bucket seats and subtle red CS logos on the door card and center console. 2026 BMW M2 CS — Source: BMW Autoblog Newsletter Autoblog brings you car news; expert reviews and exciting pictures and video. The M2 CS is rumored to get a serious power bump BMW hasn't revealed official output figures yet, but rumors from last year suggested the turbocharged straight-six under the hood could make as much as 518 horsepower, substantially more than the stock M2. Reports also indicate that the M2 CS will remain rear-wheel-drive, setting it apart from its larger, xDrive-equipped siblings. Perhaps the only bad news about the new M2 CS is that it could get flappy paddles only, meaning no manual transmission option. The eighth member of the CS clan 2026 BMW M2 CS — Source: BMW The CS badge stands for 'Competition Sport,' a moniker for BMW's specially formulated performance cars that exhibit technically innovative BMW components for enhanced power and handling. In total, there have been seven CS cars, starting with the 2017 BMW M4 F82 CS, but the true father of the CS cars was the 1988 E30 BMW M3 Evolution, a much-coveted collector's car that's tremendously valuable even today. The M2 CS will join this illustrious set, following in the footsteps of the 2020 BMW M2 CS F87 as well as the more recent M3 CS Touring and the M4 CS. 2026 BMW M2 CS — Source: BMW All BMW CS cars get increased engine power, more aggressive suspension, lightweight construction, and enhanced aerodynamics, without compromising driver and passenger comfort. The automaker will supposedly create a CS version of the current M5, too. Final thoughts BMW M CS cars are some of the best-performers the world has ever seen, and the M2 CS should prove to be a thrilling sports coupe to drive. If the rumors are true that it won't get a proper manual transmission, our hearts will be broken (a little). The 2025 BMW M2 in bone stock form is one of the best driver's cars available today, so to remove some of the engagement seems counterintuitive. That said, the additional power, lighter weight, better suspension, and more aggressive tire set should enhance the experience above the automatic version of the current base M2. GM Announced a Landmark U.S. Manufacturing Investment
GMC Hummer electric vehicles on the production line at General Motors' Factory ZERO all-electric vehicle assembly plant in Detroit, Michigan, U.S., on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021. More domestic manufacturing? GM says yes In an announcement late on June 10, one of the most prominent Detroit-based automakers, General Motors, announced its landmark investment plans that would catalyze auto manufacturing in the United States. The automaker announced plans to invest about $4 billion over the next two years to support its U.S. manufacturing plants and their efforts to produce gas and electric vehicles. The automaker did not specify how much money each plant would receive, but it said that the $4 billion in question would help adapt the Orion Assembly in Michigan, Fairfax Assembly in Kansas, and Spring Hill Manufacturing in Tennessee for future vehicles in its pipeline. Originally, Orion was set to be reconfigured for electric vehicle production, but GM has announced that its Factory Zero electric vehicle plant in Detroit will be the dedicated facility for manufacturing the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Hummer EV, and Cadillac Escalade IQ. GM's Fairfax plant will continue to be retooled to produce the next generation of the Chevrolet Bolt EV, with production expected to begin by the end of the year. However, the automaker announced that Fairfax will share production duties with the internal combustion version of the Chevy Equinox in mid-2027 and also focus on building the next generation of affordable EVs. Furthermore, GM also stated that some of its funding will be allocated to the Spring Hill plant, where it plans to manufacture the gasoline-powered Chevrolet Blazer in 2027, alongside Cadillac's gas-powered XT5 crossover and the Cadillac Lyriq and Vistiq EVs. Previously, GM indicated that these tariffs would cost the company between $4 billion and $5 billion this year, prompting executives to revise GM's full-year earnings guidance. You may unsubscribe from email communication at anytime. According to GM sources who spoke with Automotive News and CNBC, production of the gas-powered Equinox will move to the Fairfax plant to supplement the current output in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. This change means that the Equinox manufactured in Mexico will be designated for overseas markets. Production of the Blazer will also shift from Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, where it is currently produced alongside the Chevy Blazer EV and the Ultium-powered Honda Prologue. GM said in its statement that this investment will help it reach the capacity to build more than 2 million cars per year in the U.S. 2025 Chevy Equinox 'We believe the future of transportation will be driven by American innovation and manufacturing expertise,' GM CEO Mary Barra said in a statement. 'Today's announcement demonstrates our ongoing commitment to build vehicles in the U.S and to support American jobs. We're focused on giving customers choice and offering a broad range of vehicles they love.' The investment announcement has been viewed as a win by prominent labor leaders, who see it as a direct reinvestment in a unionized labor force. In a statement, UAW President Shawn Fain, who previously aired direct support of Trump's tariffs, hailed the levies as a step forward for American labor. 'GM's decision to invest billions in American plants and prioritize U.S. workers is exactly why we spoke up in favor of these auto tariffs,' Fain said in a June 11 statement. 'The writing is on the wall: the race to the bottom is over. We have excess manufacturing capacity at our existing plants, and auto companies can easily bring good union jobs back to the U.S.' Final thoughts In remarks during a Deutsche Bank automotive investor conference on June 11, GM CFO Paul Jacobson confirmed that the automaker's multi-billion-dollar decision was made in response to Trump's tariffs, adding that though it's a lot of money, it can invest in what's next for the auto industry. 'A lot of the fear from talking to investors was that the policies that are being enacted by the administration were going to create a significant run on capital,' Jacobson said. 'Four billion dollars is a lot of money, but I think we've been able to thread that in ways that are capitalizing on the next generation of vehicles coming in, to do it efficiently, not building walls that we don't need to build where we can fill plants up, and also keep our capital forecast in line and consistent with where we've seen it.' At the same time, the company is relying on its flexibility. He pointed out that the improvements at the facilities at Fairfax and Spring Hill will be designed to adjust output based on customer demand for either gasoline or electric vehicles. 'That optionality is really important and critical for us as we move forward, being able to respond to where EV demand is going to be,' Jacobson said. About the Author James Ochoa View Profile
