Mohammed Siraj fumes at Yashasvi Jaiswal after costly drop hampers India's chances against England
Mohammed Siraj fumes as Yashasvi Jaiswal drops Ben Duckett.
New Delhi: India had a frustrating last day in the first Test when Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett comfortably chased down a huge target of 371 in a record-breaking stand of 238 to leave Shubman Gill side languishing on the verge of defeat despite five Indian batters recording centuries previously in the game. Ben Duckett made a fluent century on only 121 balls, the first century in the fourth innings of a Test match by an England opener since Alastair Cook made 109 not out against Bangladesh in Mirpur in 2010. There were not too many opportunities but there was one in the 39 th over when Duckett top-edged a short ball by Mohmmad Siraj, yet Duckett got away with it thanks to a well-judged drop by Yashasvi Jaiswal, who charged in deep backward square leg.
Unwanted record for Jaiswal
Some reports claimed that it was the fourth drop of the game by Jaiswal, the highest by any Indian in a test. It was a costly miscalculation that nobody noticed, Mohammed Siraj was very angry and he found it difficult to hide his disappointment. The message was communicated clearly by Gautam Gambhir sitting grim faced in the dressing room and not surprising the mood in the Indian camp.

The second session of the opening Test between India and England on Tuesday was disturbed by rain with the home side coasting at 181 without loss in their pursuit of 371. England now has 190 more runs to win with Ben Duckett (105 not-out) and Zak Crawley (59 not-out) having dug a firm platform against a weakening Indian bowling attack.
That was a big break when Yashasvi Jaiswal put him down on 98 and the powerful forward dive could not hold on to the catch as the England opener miscued a short ball that was bowled by Mohammed Siraj. This missed opportunity turned out to be a very expensive one because Duckett proceeded to put India to the point.
In the first session, earlier Zak Crawley was given a reprieve when Jasprit Bumrah failed to hang into a sniper of a return catch off his own bowling, and missed a difficult but vital opportunity as he followed through.

IND vs ENG: 'It is going to sting' — Rishabh Pant reacts after heartbreaking loss at Headingley
Rishabh Pant of India (Photo by) Even as England pulled off a remarkable five-wicket win in the opening Test at Headingley, India's Rishabh Pant walked away with a record that will go down in history. In a bittersweet moment, Pant became the first Indian wicketkeeper to score centuries in both innings of a Test match, an extraordinary feat that stood out in an otherwise forgettable outing for India. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Pant posted on X after the loss: "It is going to sting us for a while but we BELIEVE in bouncing back stronger." The message reflected both the pain and the resolve within the Indian camp after letting a golden opportunity slip away. Pant was India's heartbeat with the bat throughout the match. After scoring a fluent 134 in the first innings, the southpaw returned on Day 4 under immense pressure and counterattacked his way to 118 in the second, bringing up his second century of the match in just 130 balls. With this, he entered an elite club of Indian batters—Gavaskar, Dravid, Kohli, among others who've notched tons in both innings of a Test. More impressively, Pant became only the second wicketkeeper in Test historyafter Zimbabwe's Andy Flower in 2001—to achieve this feat. India Outplayed at Headingley | England Go 1-0 Up in the Series | IND vs ENG 1st Test His attacking style was once again on full display, particularly against young spinner Shoaib Bashir, whom Pant swept, reverse-swept, and charged at with unflinching intent. He also surpassed MS Dhoni to become the highest run-scoring Indian wicketkeeper in Tests on English soil. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Quiz: Who's that IPL player? India had posted 471 and 364, and set England a daunting target of 371. But Ben Duckett 's explosive 149, Root's calm 53*, and a late flourish from Jamie Smith proved too much. Despite the heartbreak, Pant's heroics gave India a fighting chance and reminded the world of his rising stature in the Test arena. Gautam Gambhir Defends Listless India Bowlers: 'Like Throwing Them In The Sea'
Last Updated: Gautam Gambhir backed his bowling unit and has asked to not judge the inexperienced pace attack. India head coach Gautam Gambhir has pointed out the lack of experience in the Indian pace attack barring Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj as the reason behind their modest returns in the five-wicket defeat to England in the first Test at Headingley. Bumrah was the only saving grace for India among the bowlers as others around him failed to make any significant impact allowing England to comfortably chase a target of 371 in Leeds to take 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series on Tuesday. 'We will have to give them time. Earlier, we used to have four fast bowlers in the squad with an experience of more than 40 Tests. It doesn't make such a big impact in one-day or T20 matches, but when you go to Australia, England, or South Africa for Tests, experience matters. It is like throwing them in the sea," Gambhir told reporters after the match. 'These are early days. If we start judging our bowlers after every Test, how will we develop a bowling attack? Outside Bumrah and Siraj, we don't have that much experience, but they (the others) have quality, which is why they are in this dressing room. But we have got to keep backing them because it's not about one tour. It's about building a fast-bowler battery that can serve India for a long time in Test cricketm" he added. Allrounder Shardul Thakur bowled 16 overs during the match with just six of them in England's first innings. Gambhir defended the ploy. 'Sometimes captain goes with his instincts and Ravindra Jadeja gave us control in first innings, that was important and we could rotate our three pacers at other end," he said. 'We know what is Shardul's quality and that is why he is playing for India and is in the dressing room. Just because he is the fourth seamer does not necessarily mean that he has to be brought ahead of a spinner. A captain went by his instinct and depending on surface we were playing," he added. Gambhir said 'every defeat is bad" and it's impact doesn't change based on whether the team is young or experienced. 'Every defeat is bad. Doesn't matter if its young team or experienced team. It's an Indian team. It is not an excuse for defeat as we represent 140 crore Indians," he said.
