Tennis: German birthday boy Zverev triumphs in Munich

Yahoo20-04-2025

German tennis star Alexander Zverev celebrated his 28th birthday with victory on home soil at the Munich Open on Sunday to finally end a disappointing run of form.
After a run of six straight ATP tournaments in which he had failed to progress beyond the quarterfinals, Zverev beat Ben Shelton of the United States 6-2, 6-4 in the final in Munich, winning €467,485 ($531,644) in prize money plus an electric car from tournament sponsor BMW.
"This was one of the best weeks you can have as a tennis player," said the Hamburg-born athlete after being handed the trophy by Bavarian premier Markus Söder (CSU).
"I don't think we need to talk about the last few weeks anymore," he added. "I'm just so happy with the title and the level I managed to play at. Now I'm just going to enjoy my birthday and the fact I've won a tournament."
Despite his recent drop-off in form, Zverev remained among the top three best tennis players in the world, according to the ATP rankings.
Zverev's troubles began with a defeat to world number two Jannik Sinner in the final of the Australian Open in January – after which the Italian accepted a three-month ban as part of a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) over two positive doping tests in 2024.
Zverev's apparent return to form comes at an ideal time, with the second grand slam of the year, the French Open in Paris, just one month away.
After putting on a pair of traditional Bavarian lederhosen and driving a quick lap in the electric car, Zverev was serenaded with a rendition of "Happy Birthday" by the 6,000-strong crowd, which also included Bayern Munich legend Thomas Müller.
"You can all be happy that I didn't have to sing," Zverev joked.

Vancouver's Loopy Godinez to face former UFC champion Jessica Andrade in Chicago

Canadian strawweight Loopy Godinez will face former champion Jessica (Bate Estaca) Andrade at UFC 319 in Chicago on Aug. 16. Godinez (13-5-0) is ranked 11th among strawweight (115-pound) contenders while Andrade is ranked fifth among strawweights and ninth among flyweights (125 pounds). Godinez, 31, ended a two-fight losing skid with a win over Brazil's Julia (Psycho) Polastri in March. The Mexican-born, Vancouver-based fighter is 8-5-0 in the UFC. Andrade (26-14-0) won the strawweight title at UFC 237 in May 2019 when she knocked out American Rose (Thug) Namajunas. But she lost to China's Zhang Weili in her first title defence. The Brazilian was stopped by flyweight champion Valentina (Bullet) Shevchenko at UFC 261 in April 2021. Andrade has lost her last two outings and five of her last seven. She was submitted by Canadian Jasmine Jasudavicius last time out, at UFC 315 in May in Montreal. Andrade is 17-12-0 in the UFC. The main event at Chicago's United Centre sees South African Dricus du Plessis defend his middleweight title against No. 3 Khamzat Chimaev of the United Arab Emirates. Michigan basketball expected to add German 7-footer Malick Kordel to 2025 class

Michigan basketball expected to add German 7-footer Malick Kordel to 2025 class Dusty May has been cooking on the recruiting trail and via the transfer portal, bringing in players like five-star combo guard Trey McKenney, No. 1 transfer Yaxel Lendeborg, and other key pieces like center Aday Mara, forward Morez Johnson Jr., and guard Elliot Cadeau. And it appears that Michigan basketball's recruiting class is getting bigger — literally. The Wolverines had one late addition in three-star Patrick Liburd — who officially signed this week — and appear set to add another. Having played in Germany for the Fraport Skyliners, Malick Kordel rings in at 7-foot-1, 250 pounds, and also had interest from Iowa, Butler, Villanova, Xavier, and others. With the Skyliners, Kordel averaged 11.9 points per game, 8.4 rebounds, and shot 71.4% from the field. Kordel appears to be Ann Arbor-bound after appearing in the University of Michigan directory. There has been no official announcement from either Kordel, any of the recruiting sites, or Michigan basketball at this juncture. Should he join the fold as expected, that would give the maize and blue to run with two seven-footers on the floor again — this time with Kordel and Mara — as they had last year with Vlad Goldin and Danny Wolf. The scouting report from the Villanova Rivals site: A raw athlete with growing understanding of basketball, Kordel still has a lot to learn about the game, considering he just recently picked up the sport within the last several years. At the same time, he uses his physical tools well in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL). With those tools, Kordel is an uber-effective screener, making it look as though opposing defenders are running into a brick wall when he sets a pick. When he dives to the basket, Kordel uses his long frame to catch passes from the ball-handler as the roll man for easy dunks and finishes around the rim. He thrives in the high pick-and-roll. The added athleticism he possesses allows Kordel to take one or two bounding steps -- either from the free throw line or the opposing elbows -- and go up for a lob or find open space in the defense for a pass from a teammate that leads to an easy deuce. His size also allows him to post up defenders with ease. Though he needs to grow in his technical skills around the rim, Kordel uses his strength and overwhelming bulk to set himself up for easy buckets. He also has the ability to out-strength or out-size other bigs close to the rim, while serving as a lob threat in the pick and roll. In addition to bully ball, Kordel can use touch within five feet for floaters or soft hooks from a few feet out. Assuming his commitment, that would give Michigan four pledges in 2025, with McKenney, Liburd, Winters Grady, and now Kordel in the fold.
