Tributes to 'proud Sheffielder' and referee Rennie

Yahoo2 days ago

Trailblazing former Premier League referee Uriah Rennie has been described as a "proud Sheffielder" who will be sadly missed in his adopted hometown.
Rennie was the top flight's first black referee and took charge of more than 300 matches between between 1997 and 2008.
Outside of football he worked as a magistrate and, last month, took up the role of chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University.
Rennie's partner, Jayne, and his older brother, Glenroy, said he would be "so very sadly missed", following his death aged 65.
In a statement, they said: "Our family have appreciated all the support from the nursing teams from Northern General and Weston Park Hospitals, plus close family and friends during the past few weeks at such a difficult time."
His family said he had been "privately battling a recent cancer diagnosis" prior to his death.
Born in Jamaica, Rennie moved to Sheffield as a child. In April he revealed he was learning to walk again after a rare condition left him paralysed from the waist down.
Former sports minister Richard Caborn said Sheffield had "lost one of its favourite sons".
Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield, Caborn, a former MP for Sheffield Central, said: "He was born in Jamaica but he was adopted by this city and adopted by the great sport of football.
"I was with him a couple of weeks ago at Weston Park Hospital and he was really on great form, so last night when I received the news it was really, really sad news because we thought he was on the mend."
Caborn said he had been "really, really proud" to have been appointed the new chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University.
The university's vice chancellor, Liz Mossop, said Rennie had been a "trailblazer for inclusion in sport", as well as a "man of great integrity with a fierce commitment to equity and inclusion".
She added: "On behalf of the entire University community I want to express our shock and sadness at the news of Uri's death.
"Uri had only just begun his role as the University's Chancellor, but even in this short time he had already made a profound impact, challenging us to be bolder in our ambitions and how we should truly live our values. We were greatly looking forward to working with him."
"Uri was a proud Sheffielder and family man, deeply committed to the city and to helping people from resilient communities to achieve their potential."
South Yorkshire mayor Oliver Coppard offered his condolences to Rennie's family and "many, many friends".
"He broke down barriers and lifted others up," Coppard said.
"As well as his work in football, he campaigned to promote inclusion in sport and worked as a magistrate in Sheffield. May his memory be a blessing."

Liverpool reach verbal agreement with Bayer Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz

Fabrizio Romano reports that Liverpool have reached a verbal agreement in principle with Bayer Leverkusen to sign Florian Wirtz for a reported €150m including bonuses. It brings an end to the saga that will see the 22-year-old German playmaker play for Arne Slot's side next season. Liverpool's latest offer comes just days after it was reported that Leverkusen were expecting a final offer from the Premier League side after rejecting two previous approaches. Advertisement The arrival of Wirtz – who is expected to sign a contract until 2030 – at Liverpool will see two transfer records broken: the record fee received by a Bundesliga club for a player, and a record arrival in the Premier League, beating Chelsea's record purchase of Enzo Fernandez for around €121m. Wirtz scored 10 goals and provided 13 assists in 31 Bundesliga games for Bayer Leverkusen last season, and 31 goal contributions (16 goals and 15 assists) in 45 games across all competitions. Liverpool in talks with SENSATIONAL striker who wants Premier League move

Liverpool in talks with SENSATIONAL striker who wants Premier League move Victor Osimhen available this summer The 26-year-old scored 37 goals in 41 games overall - sparking an almighty transfer clamour for his signature this summer. Napoli still own Osimhen's rights but there is no way back for him at the Diego Maradona Stadium. Therefore, the Italian champions are seeking to cash in this summer. Advertisement Osimhen is said to have rejected a move to Saudi Arabia at this stage of his career - and has his eyes firmly trained on the Premier League. And now, according to a report in TBR Football, the hitman has held talks with Liverpool over a move to Anfield. © IMAGO Liverpool hold Osimhen talks 'After recently holding discussions with Liverpool, Victor Osimhen is still determined to move to the Premier League this summer,' a report reads. 'Liverpool are interested in Osimhen, a striker who is also on Manchester United's radar.' The report also adds that Osimhen doesn't view his wage demands as excessive, despite previous speculation that his expected pay packet was pricing clubs out of the equation. With Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike's prices spiralling out of control, moreover, the report states that Osimhen is available for a very reasonable-looking £50m.

Man City confirm appointment of former Liverpool assistant coach Pep Lijnders

Manchester City have appointed long-time Jurgen Klopp ally Pep Lijnders into their backrooom staff as two former Liverpool coaches join forces with Pep Guardiola. Lijnders was instrumental in Klopp's Liverpool setup that went toe-to-toe with Guardiola between 2018 and 2022, helping guide the Reds to their first Premier League title in 30 years in 2020 as well as a Champions League in 2019. Advertisement But after a short-lived stint in management at RB Salzburg, Lijnders has returned to the Premier League, only at the team he formerly considered a rival. He is joined by opposition analyst James French, who has been directly poached from Liverpool. At the close of the 2024/25 season, City underwent a notable backroom reshuffle. Long-serving assistants Juan Manuel Lillo, Inigo Dominguez, and set piece coach Carlos Vicens departed, leaving some prominent gaps in Guardiola's managerial setup. Lijnders acts to fill one of those voids, arriving at the Etihad with a decorated resume and extensive elite-level coaching experience. It's the first assistant manager role he has taken up since departing Liverpool alongside Jurgen Klopp in 2024. Advertisement The Dutchman's involvement in elite title-winning environments will align seamlessly with City's possession-based style and ambition for glory as they seek to rebuild following an underwhelming trophyless campaign. Meanwhile, James French moves from Merseyside to become a similarly integral member of City's coaching setup, also armed with vast Premier League experience. Pep Lijnders (left) was integral to Jurgen Klopp's setup at Liverpool (PA) The 37-year-old began his career at Swansea before working for the Welsh FA. Now, he arrives directly from Liverpool's backroom staff, where he spent over a decade. French's dedicated oversight will look to ensure that marginal gains are optimised to give City a tactical edge, something they apparently lacked as they drifted away from the title race last term. Both coaches will be bled into Guardiola's setup in time for the Club World Cup, which starts on June 14. Watch every Fifa Club World Cup game free on DAZN. Sign up here now.
